The localization of chromogranin A and B, beta-endorphin, met-enkephalin and leu-enkephalin was immunocytochemically investigated in the submandibular salivary gland (SMG) and pancreas of male mice using different antibodies. Blood plasma beta-endorphin concentrations were measured in 87 patients with various facial and head pain syndromes: trigeminal neuralgia or neuropathy Horner syndrome and migraine, facial autonomic pains. beta-endorphin concentrations were measured before and after treatment. In the groups under investigation, the neuropeptide showed opposite changes in plasma levels after the therapy depending on the type of the syndrome.

In rats beta-endorphin antiserum systemic injection decreased during 1-2 days the threshold of tail-shock and latency of tail-flick tests, and during subsequent 85 days increased the threshold of tail shock, but not changed the latency of tail-flick tests. Naloxone injection blocked the increasing of thresholds, but not changed the latency of tail tests. It is suggested that antiserum evokes the first inhibition and the second selective activation of endogenous antinociceptive opioid system with affinity to electric nociception.

Plasma levels of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity (beta-ELI) were measured in premature infants with apnea (n = 11) and compared to those in nonapneic controls (n = 9). Primary central alveolar hypoventilation (PCAH) has been described in adults, children, and infants. It is usually diagnosed clinically at an advanced stage when the secondary effects of chronic hypoxia and hypercapnia become evident. We report here PCAH in its early stage in a 7-year-old child, whose disease appeared as acute respiratory failure during an acute illness. The antinociceptive effect of i.t.-administered Tyr-d-Arg-Phe-β-Ala (TAPA), an N-terminal tetrapeptide analog of dermorphin, was characterized in ddY mice.
