Epidemiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in England and Wales.

Some aspects of the epidemiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in England and Wales in the decade 1964-73 were studied with the object of detecting evidence of natural transmission of this slow virus encephalopathy. Some geographical clustering and possibility of contact between cases was found.

Case-Fatality Risk of Norovirus, England, 2022-2025.

Norovirus incidence increased in England during 2022-2025, when GII.17 replaced GII.4 as the dominant genotype. By using nationally linked norovirus testing and fatality data, we found age and care setting, but not genotype, were associated with case-fatality risk. Increased incidence might reflect changes in transmissibility or population immunity.

Babesia Species Detected in Deer from Southwest England.

Babesia species have been detected in deer across Europe, and deer grazing in the same location as livestock may increase the risk of transmission of species such as the parasite B. divergens. Bovine babesiosis and the cost of treatment increase the economic burden on farmers. To determine the presence of Babesia species in wild deer populations in the counties of Devon and Somerset, Southwest England, blood samples were collected from red (Cervus elaphus) and fallow (Dama dama) deer as part of routine deer management during late 2022 and early 2023. Extracted DNA samples were tested for the p…

Synthetic Cannabinoid-Related Deaths in England, 2012-2019.

Aim: To identify drug-related death trends associated with synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) reported to the National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths (NPSAD) from England. Design: Case reports from NPSAD (England) where a SCRA was detected in post-mortem tissue(s) and/or implicated in the death were extracted, analyzed, and compared against non-SCRA-related deaths that occurred over the same time period (2012-2019). Findings: One hundred sixty-five death SCRA-related reports were extracted, with 18 different SCRAs detected. Following the first death in 2012, a subsequent shar…

Bile duct reconstruction following laparoscopic cholecystectomy in England.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of bile duct reconstruction (BDR) following laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and to identify associated risk factors. BACKGROUND: Major bile duct injury (BDI) requiring reconstruction is a serious complication of cholecystectomy. METHODS: All LC and attempted LC operations in England between April 2001 and March 2013 were identified. Patients with malignancy, a stone in bile duct or those who underwent bile duct exploration were excluded. This cohort of patients was followed for 1 year to identify those who underwent BDR as a surrogate marker for major…

Cryptococcus gattii genotype VGI infection in New England.

Cryptococcus gattii is a known, emerging infectious disease pathogen predominantly in the Pacific Northwest, the United States, and British Columbia, Canada. We report a case of an immunocompetent adolescent from New England who had severe pulmonary and central nervous system infection caused by the VGI genotype of C. gattii.

Concurrent conditions and human listeriosis, England, 1999-2009.

The epidemiology of listeriosis in England and Wales changed during 2001-2008; more patients ≥60 years of age had bacteremia than in previous years. To investigate these changes, we calculated risk for listeriosis by concurrent condition for non-pregnancy-associated listeriosis cases reported to the national surveillance system in England during 1999-2009. Conditions occurring with L. monocytogenes infection were coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, and compared with appropriate hospital episode statistics inpatient denominator data to calculate incid…

Heart-lung transplantation: initial experience in New England.

Between May 1988 and June 1989, five combined heart-lung transplants were performed. There were two males, age 16 and 19 years, and three females age 33, 34, and 19 years. Three patients had primary pulmonary hypertension, one had cystic fibrosis, and the fifth had doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy with associated pulmonary hypertension. All patients were severely restricted in functional capacity and were oxygen-dependent. Four grafts were distantly procured (ischemic times 1:15, 2:35, 2:45, 3:45); one was procured on-site (ischemic time 0:58). Four of five grafts functioned well (PO2 on FIO

Valuing five centuries of unpaid breastfeeding in England.

Breastfeeding is vital and valuable labor, contributing to the physical and cognitive health of children throughout their lives, yet it is rarely compensated in formal labor markets. Its economic importance may therefore go unrecognized. We impute upper and lower bounds for the value of unpaid breastfeeding over five centuries in England to better understand its economic role over the course of economic development. We also contribute an estimate of changes in breastfeeding duration over this period from historical and bioarchaeological sources using interval regression. At minimum, unpaid bre…

The Oral Microbiome of King Richard III of England.

OBJECTIVES: Metagenomic investigations of ancient dental calculus provide insights into oral health, disease, and diet. Here, we analyze the dental calculus metagenome of King Richard III of England (1452-1485). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental calculus DNA was extracted from three teeth of King Richard III and shotgun sequenced to a depth of nearly 400 million reads. The metagenomic data were taxonomically profiled and compared to new and previously published dental calculus metagenomes from England, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Germany spanning the Neolithic to the present. Sequencing data we…

Trends in the last decade of maxillofacial trauma in England.

Injuries to the face, mouth and jaws are common presentations to UK hospitals. Understanding the current volume of work and the recent changes can yield important lessons for the teams that deal with facial injuries. We examined the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) covering England for the financial reporting years ending in 2015-2024 for relevant diagnoses and procedures undertaken during hospital admissions. A significant reduction in activity in many areas due to COIVD-19 was found. We report on the change between average volumes of activity in the years ending 2015-17, compared with the y…

Rising rates of sepsis in England: an ecological study.

PURPOSE: Sepsis is life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. It is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. A contemporary overview of sepsis epidemiology in England is long overdue. This study provides an update on the incidence of sepsis-coded hospital admissions and mortality following the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the relative contribution of different bacterial pathogens to sepsis-coded admissions. METHODS: We undertook a descriptive study of all hospital admissions from April 1998 to March 2024 using routinely collected health data. In…

Salmonella in the slaughter sheep population in England and Wales.

AIMS: A survey of Salmonella in sheep caecal content samples was undertaken in England and Wales in 2023. METHODS: Over 9 months, repeated sampling was conducted in 12 abattoirs that represented 28% of national annual sheep throughput with good geographical coverage. Samples of caecal content were obtained from 1228 sheep at abattoirs and cultured for Salmonella spp. RESULTS: Salmonella was isolated from 104 (8.5%) samples, with 21 isolations (1.7%) of Salmonella Typhimurium. The most commonly isolated serovar (80 samples, 6.5%) was the sheep-adapted Salmonella enterica subspecies diarizonae…
