A comprehensive examination of the impact of environmental pollution on lung cancer: A review.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, with environmental factors playing critical roles in its development and progression. Respirable and food-borne contaminants are major contributors to lung cancer onset, influencing various physiological pathways that lead to lung injury and tumor formation. AIM OF REVIEW: This review aims to examine the effects of common environmental pollutants on lung cancer development, highlighting the role of specific contaminants, such as PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5  µm) and nitrogen oxides, and warning…

Comparing Environmental Policies to Reduce Pharmaceutical Pollution and Address Disparities.

Pharmaceutical products, including active pharmaceutical ingredients and inactive ingredients such as packaging materials, have raised significant concerns due to their persistent input and potential threats to human and environmental health. Discourse on reducing pharmaceutical waste and subsequent pollution is often limited, as information about the toxicity of pharmaceuticals in humans is yet to be fully established. Nevertheless, there is growing awareness about ecotoxicity, and efforts to curb pharmaceutical pollution in the European Union (EU), United States (US), and Canada have emerged

The Influence of Environmental Air Pollution on Ventricular Arrhythmias: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to air pollution is a recognised risk factor for cardiovascular disease and has been associated with supraventricular arrhythmias. The effect of air pollution on ventricular arrhythmias is less clear. This scoping review assessed the effects of particulate and gaseous air pollutants on the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for studies assessing the effects of air pollutants on ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. These pollutants were particulate matter (PM) 2.5, PM10, Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Carbo

Improvements in SO2 pollution in India: role of technology and environmental regulations.

India relies heavily on coal-based thermal power plants to meet its energy demands. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) emitted from these plants and industries is a major air pollutant. Analysis of spatial and temporal changes in SO2 using accurate and continuous observations is required to formulate mitigation strategies to curb the increasing air pollution in India. Here, we present the temporal changes in SO2 concentrations over India in the past four decades (1980-2020). Our analysis shows that the Central and East India, and Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) are the hotspots of SO2, as these regions house a c

Association between environmental air pollution and rheumatoid arthritis flares.

OBJECTIVES: Environmental air pollution has been linked to the pathogenesis of RA. Nevertheless, evidence linking higher concentrations of air pollutants with the risk of RA reactivations is missing. The objective of the present study was to determine the association between RA flares and air pollution. METHODS: We collected longitudinal data of patients affected by RA and of the daily concentration of air pollutants in the Verona area. We designed a case-crossover study. We compared the exposure to pollutants in the 30-day and 60-day periods preceding an arthritic flare referent to the 30-da

Adaptative responses of myenteric neurons of Sphoeroides testudineus to environmental pollution.

Contamination in estuarine regions affects the local biota damaging the ecosystems and reaching humans. The gastrointestinal tract is a dynamic environment capable of obtaining nutrients and energy from food while it protects the host against harmful toxins and pathogens from the external environment. These functions are modulated by the enteric nervous system and changes in its structure can result in gastrointestinal disorders. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the environmental contaminants have effects on the myenteric neuronal plasticity of pufferfish Sphoeroides testudineus.

A link between environmental pollution and civilization disorders: a mini review.

Most civilization disorders have a complex etiology, involving factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental pollution (EP) due to different chemicals. Among harmful chemicals, the major ones include particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals, pesticides, plasticizers, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, furans, some food additives, hormones, and antibiotics. In fact, potential pollutants are countless and most of them have never been evaluated in terms of their toxicity and health risks, especially that new chemicals emerge

A Novel Environmental Justice Indicator for Managing Local Air Pollution.

Environmental justice efforts in the United States seek to provide equal protection from environmental hazards, such as air pollution, to all groups, particularly among traditionally disadvantaged populations. To accomplish this objective, the U.S. EPA has previously required states to use an environmental justice screening tool as part of air quality planning decision-making. The generally utilized approach to assess potential areas of environmental justice concern relies on static comparisons of environmental and demographic information to identify areas where minority and low income populat

Environmental nickel pollution: does it protect against nickel allergy?

The Norwegian-Russian border area is polluted because of emissions from two local Russian nickel refineries. We patch tested the general adult population on both sides of the border. Only 7.2% of the Russian women were sensitized to nickel, compared with 27.5% of the Norwegian women. We suggest that long-term exposure to nickel may have induced immunologic tolerance in the Russian population.

Environmental exposure to air pollution and allergens and peak flow changes.

Laboratory-based studies have shown that ozone and nitrogen dioxide can potentiate the effect of allergen in sensitized asthmatic subjects, but it is not known whether this interaction is important under natural exposure conditions. Thirty-five subjects with clinical diagnoses of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and with a provocative dose causing a 20% fall in forced expiratory volume in one second methacholine <12.25 micromol (using the Yan method) kept peak expiratory flow (PEF) records for a 4-week period during late summer, with concurrent measurement of spore and pollen co

Occupational exposure, environmental pollution and chronic respiratory symptoms in Vietnam.

Since the introduction of the market economy in 1986, Vietnam has been in the process of rapid economic development. However, the current state of affairs in the industries is very profit-oriented and due consideration is not given to the occupational health services and environmental health. In order to investigate the relationship among occupational exposure to dust/chemicals (toxic gases/fume), environmental pollution and chronic respiratory symptoms in Vietnam, the questionnaire standardized by the American Thoracic Society was applied to 1,562 subjects living in the Quang Ninh area and it

[Lead in the organs and tissues of slaughter cattle as a result of environmental pollution].

The normal values of lead in the organs and tissues of clinically healthy slaughter cattle were determined by the method of atomic absorption spectrophotometry and by the polarographic method. Animals of various age categories came from several farms of the East-Slovakian region. The lead found in the liver of young fattened cattle was not determined polarographically, since its concentration was under the threshold of sensitivity of the method (1.0 ppm). In the older category of animals (4-16 years old dairy cows) the following lead levels were revealed by the method of atomic absorption spec

Environmental pollutants as modifiers of antimicrobial resistance risk across food systems: a One Health perspective.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria associated with food systems is commonly attributed to antimicrobial use in clinical medicine and … water, animals, crops, processing environments, markets, and households. This Perspective considers environmental pollutants as modifiers of AMR risk rather than sufficient evidence of causation or clinically relevant human transmission. Public-health concern is greatest where four elements converge: selective pollutant pressure, viable pathogens or clinically relevant co …

Impacts of Environmental Pollutants on Innate Immunity: The Role of Group 2 Innate Lymphoid Cells.

Environmental pollution has emerged as one of the biggest threats to health in the contemporary world. Pollutants modify immune responses and may induce immunotoxicity. In this review, we describe the impact of significant environmental pollutants on the innate immune system, including ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM), diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) and cigarette smoke (CS), as well as emerging pollutants such as chemical contaminants, nanomaterials, and microplastics, with a particular focus on the regulatory mechanisms of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs). ILCs, tissue-resident lymphocytes wi…

Pollutants regulate changes in pathological markers of neurodegenerative diseases: a new perspective in environmental toxicology.

Neurodegenerative diseases are major global health challenges, with their pathogenesis closely linked to the abnormal aggregation of pathological proteins. Beyond genetic factors, environmental pollutants play key roles in disease onset and progression. Conventional reviews often focus on associations between specific pollutants and particular diseases. This review innovatively concentrates on the common pathogenic mechanisms of core pathological markers (e.g., Aβ, Tau, α-syn, TDP-43), systematically detailing how various pollutants, including air pollutants, metals, and persistent organic pol…
