Postpartum hemorrhage: epidemiology, risk factors, and causes.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of death and morbidity relating to pregnancy. Uterine atony is the leading cause of PPH, and trauma, including iatrogenic trauma, increases the risk for postpartum hemorrhage. Women with PPH in a pregnancy are at increased risk of PPH in a subsequent pregnancy. Awareness of these facts, and anticipation and prevention of uterine atony, as well as avoiding unnecessary cesareans, episiotomies, and other genital tract trauma have the potential to significantly reduce the mortality and morbidity from postpartum hemorrhage. The epidemiology of postpart

Epidemiological and genetic factors associated with ovarian cancer.

The purpose of this article was to provide a comprehensive review of the epidemiological and genetic factors associated with ovarian cancer. A more complete understanding of the determinants of ovarian cancer may lead to the development of better screening and detection methods for this disease. The first section of this article reviews current literature on screening and early detection of ovarian cancer. The second section reviews the epidemiology of ovarian cancer, specifically highlighting the risk factors associated with the development of this disease. The article concludes with a discus

Gastric cancer in Iran: epidemiology and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Neurobrucellosis (NB) is a rare, but important complication of brucellosis. The clinical features vary greatly and, in general, tend to be chronic. Many laboratory procedures are usually employed in the diagnosis of NB. Even though the culture method is the gold standard, growth rate is low and time consuming. Thus the rate of sequelae and mortality increase in case of a delay in treatment. Therefore it is necessary to perform serological tests in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in suspected patients. In this study we aim to evaluate clinical features, diagnosis, and treat

Pemphigus--analysis of epidemiological factors in 155 patients.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris is a chronic autoimmune mucocutaneous blistering disease. Only a few studies have evaluated the epidemiological and aetiological parameters of pemphigus vulgaris in a large group of patients over the long term. METHODS: The sample included 155 patients with a diagnosis of pemphigus who attended the pemphigus clinic of a major tertiary medical centre from 1976 to 2004. Data were obtained from the patient files and entered into an ad hoc form; patients were contacted by telephone for missing information. RESULTS: The female-to-male ratio was 1.5 : 1. Non-Ashkenaz

Hepatocellular carcinoma: epidemiology, risk factors and pathogenesis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the commonest primary malignant cancer of the liver in the world. Given that the burden of chronic liver disease is expected to rise owing to increasing rates of alcoholism, hepatitis B and C prevalence and obesity-related fatty liver disease, it is expected that the incidence of HCC will also increase in the foreseeable future. This article summarizes the international epidemiology, the risk factors and the pathogenesis of HCC, including the roles of viral hepatitis, toxins, such as alcohol and aflatoxin, and insulin resistance.

Epidemiology, risk factors, and lifestyle modifications for gout.

Gout affects more than 1% of adults in the USA, and it is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis among men. Accumulating data support an increase in the prevalence of gout that is potentially attributable to recent shifts in diet and lifestyle, improved medical care, and increased longevity. There are both nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors for hyperuricemia and gout. Nonmodifiable risk factors include age and sex. Gout prevalence increases in direct association with age; the increased longevity of populations in industrialized nations may contribute to a higher prevalence of go

[An epidemiological investigation on injection related risk factors].

OBJECTIVE: To explore risk factors of injection-related sharp injury and to provide safety injection guidance to healthcare takers. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey and 1:1 case-control study was used to study the epidemiological features and risk factors of sharp injuries among 3010 clinical nurses and nurse students from 13 hospitals in Guangzhou. Logistic multiple factor analysis was used. RESULTS: Eighty-seven point five percent of nurses have suffered injuries at last once time. During the past month, 37.6% of the nurses have suffered injuries at least once time. The frequency of the i

Ovarian cancer: epidemiology, biology, and prognostic factors.

Ovarian cancer varies widely in frequency among different geographic regions and ethnic groups, with a high incidence in Northern Europe and the United States, and a low incidence in Japan. The majority of cases are sporadic, and only 5% to 10% of ovarian cancers are familial. The etiology of ovarian cancer is poorly understood. Models of ovarian carcinogenesis include the theory of incessant ovulation, in which a person's age at ovulation, i.e., lifetime number of ovulatory cycles, is an index of her ovarian cancer risk. Excessive gonadotropin and androgen stimulation of the ovary have been p

[Epidemiological risk factors for non-traumatic osteonecrosis].

Certain fractures and/or dislocations of the femoral head are known to cause arterial injury and result in post-traumatic osteonecrosis. However, the more complex etiology of non-traumatic osteonecrosis is multifactorial and includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy, thermal injuries, and especially coagulopathies, which are now commonly observed in these patients. Intravascular coagulation with fibrin thrombosis begins in the capillaries and sinusoids of the intraosseous microcirculation, and residual venous thrombosis is more likely to occur if there is coexistent hypofibrinolysis. Coagulopathies

Epidemiology of rhinitis in Thais: characteristics and risk factors.

A questionnaire survey was performed on 3,124 subjects living in Bangkok and its vicinity. The cumulative prevalence of chronic rhinitis (CR) was 13.15% (95% CI = 13.13-13.17). The characteristics of CR subjects, i.e. age group, current occupation, associated allergy, family history of atopy, cigarette smoking and drinking habits were totally different from the non CR group, except for sex preponderance. The possible risk factors for developing CR in this group were high income occupation, presence of associated allergy, family history of atopy, smoking and drinking habits. When CR subjects we

Classic kaposi sarcoma: epidemiology and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Although Kaposi sarcoma (KS) initially was described over a century ago, its biology remains enigmatic and conflicting. Whereas the classic type occurs mainly in older men of Mediterranean or Eastern European backgrounds and is not linked to impairment of the host immune response, iatrogenic and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated KS are linked to such conditions. A recently discovered pathogen, KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) (also known as human herpesvirus 8 [HHV8]), is found in tissues from all four forms of KS (classic, iatrogenic, endemic [African], and HIV-associa

Carcinoma of oesophagus--aetiological factors and epidemiology: an overview.

Tobacco and alcohol, opium, hot tea and food, bracken and tannins, plant irritants, fungal infection, nitrosamines, nitrates and nitrites, moldy foods and mycotoxins and dietary deficiencies have received attention as aetiological factors for carcinoma of oesophagus. Global epidemiology and epidemiology at the national level show that it has marked regional pattern with steep gradients and marked variations among countries and provinces suggesting a strong aetiological role of environmental risk factors. The aetiological agents for carcinoma of oesophagus appear to be many which may act togeth

[Nutritional risk factors for gallstones. Epidemiological analysis].

This article reviews the role of nutrition in the incidence of gallstones. The epidemiological situation of gallbladder disease has wide worldwide geographical variations, being Pima Indians and the Chileans the most affected populations. The main nutritional risk factor is obesity. Other risk are serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, unbalanced and excessive caloric intake, fasting periods of more than eight hours, hypocaloric diets of less than 700 Kcal/day, specially in obese subjects and parenteral nutrition lasting more than two weeks. The main conclusion of this revision is that nut

Epidemiology of factor V Leiden: clinical implications.

Inherited resistance to activated protein C (APC) has been recently recognized as a novel cause underlying venous thrombophilia. In most cases APC resistance is due to a single point mutation in the factor V gene leading to a replacement of Arg506 with Gln (factor V Leiden). Factor V Leiden allele is present in about 5% of the Caucasian individuals (Europeans, Jews, Israeli Arabs, and Indians) and is virtually absent in Africans, Asians, and races with Asian ancestry such as Amerindians, Eskimos, and Polynesians; this suggests a single origin of the mutation, which has been proven by haplotype

[Epidemiology of ectopic pregnancy: incidence and risk factors].

During the past two decades, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy (EP) has doubled or tripled in many parts of the world. In France, EP currently constitutes 2 % of livebirths and 1.6 % of all reported pregnancies. These rates seem presently stable. The main identified risk factors include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)--in particular that due to Chlamydial infection, previous ectopic pregnancy and cigarette smoking. More than 50 % of EP cases are attributable to infectious factors and cigarette smoking, suggesting dramatic effects on EP rates of appropriate prevention programs. A third risk

[Epidemiology and prognostic factors in cutaneous malignant melanoma].

207 patients with primary cutaneous malignant melanoma were admitted between August 1, 1988 and July 31, 1992 for local excision and treatment. The female to male ratio was 1.4:1 and the peak age was in the seventies. The most frequent site in males was the back and in females the legs. Superficial spreading melanoma was the most frequent type (40%); there was also a high rate of nodular melanoma (20%), particularly in males. Thin melanomas accounted for most of the cases. On follow-up 27 (13%) developed metastases in transit or in regional lymph nodes and 10 (5%) developed distant metastases;

Epidemiology of risk factors for age-related cataract.

Epidemiologic studies on risk factors for cataract have progressed significantly over the last decade. Age-related cataract is a multifactorial disease, and different risk factors seem to play a role for different cataract types. Cortical and posterior subcapsular cataracts appear to be most closely related to environmental stresses such as ultraviolet exposure, diabetes, and drug ingestion. Nuclear cataracts appear to be associated with smoking. Alcohol use seems to be associated with all cataract types. Consistent evidence also suggests that the prevalence of all cataract types is lower amon

The epidemiology of fractured femurs and the effect of these factors on outcome.

We have analysed 250 cases of fractured shaft of the femur with the objective of highlighting any preventative measures and anticipating morbidity associated with cause and type of injury. The younger patients typically injure themselves as pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists in Summer. The older patients tend to have falls in late Summer and Winter. The outcome varies depending on the cause, type and age of the injured person. The greatest morbidity was found in high-velocity accidents involving motorcyclists, pedestrians and car accidents. Knee flexion is a particular problem with thes

Snoring as a risk factor for disease: an epidemiological survey.

In a study conducted in four family practice units in Toronto, Canada, 2001 subjects reported on snoring and medical conditions in members of their households. For spouses the prevalence of snoring increased with age up to the seventh decade, with a higher prevalence of nearly 85% in husbands. For 11 medical problems an association existed between snoring, its frequency, and the presence of the condition. This association continued when the data were corrected for sex, age, and marital state. For hypertension both men and women who snored between the fifth and 10th decades had a twofold increa
