Deep brain stimulation is an effective treatment for different types of dystonia; nevertheless dystonic movements could provoke hardware-related complications, including fractures or electrodes displacement. Silicon photonic biosensors are highly attractive for multiplexed Lab-on-Chip systems. Here, we characterize the sensing performance of 3 µm TE-mode and 10 µm dual TE/TM-mode silicon photonic micro-disk resonators and demonstrate their ability to detect the specific capture of biomolecules. A structure based on plasmonic nano-capillary resonators for optical wavelengths demultiplexing is proposed and numerically investigated. The structure consists of main/bus waveguide connected with series of nano-capillary resonators, each of which tuned at different wavelength transmission band. A model based on resonator theory is given to design the working wavelength of the structure. Both analytical and simulation results reveal that the demultiplexing wavelength of each channel has linear and nonlinear relationships with length and width of the nano-capillary structure.

PURPOSE: Soft contact lenses with spherical base curves have been used for many years. The computation of the refractive powers of these lenses is easy, requiring only that one uses the lens maker equation for thick lenses. Nevertheless, for customized contact lenses, there is yet no reliable method for measuring the higher order optical aberrations. In this study we have developed in the Center for Visual Sciences of the University of Rochester an optical apparatus that allows for precise measurement of low and high order aberrations of customized soft contact lenses.

The mechanism of lasing in single cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire cavities was elucidated by temperature-dependent and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Temperature-dependent PL studies reveal rich spectral features and show that an exciton-exciton interaction is critical to lasing up to 75 K, while an exciton-phonon process dominates at higher temperatures. Subclavian crush syndrome is a well-described cause of pacemaker lead failure resulting from an entrapment of a lead or leads between the clavicle and the first rib. A new thinner lead (ThinLine) was designed to minimize this complication. Our patient developed atrial and ventricular lead subclavian crush syndrome with both conventional and thin leads.

INTRODUCTION: Proper placement is an essential prerequisite for the use of central venous catheters. Our study was undertaken to determine the incidence of aberrant locations dependent on different anatomic approaches for various types of central venous catheters and to elucidate failures and pitfalls of preventive practices.

An accurate cost analysis of the use of one of the new synthetic casting materials (Cellacast) compared with plaster-of-Paris (Gypsona) was undertaken over a 3-month period in the fracture clinic of Cardiff Royal Infirmary.
