Mapping AI Ethics Integration in Postgraduate Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review Through the Lenses of Principlism and Transformative Learning.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is disrupting healthcare and health professions education (HPE), creating complex ethical challenges. Despite existing governance frameworks, postgraduate and continuing professional development (CPD) learners require stronger micro-level ethical competence. However, AI-ethics remains insufficiently integrated into postgraduate/CPD curricula with few real-world reflective and interprofessional strategies, raising concerns regarding ethical preparedness. The aim of this study is to map how AI ethics is taught within postgraduate/CPD HPE, drawing on princ

Ethics review or compliance check? an empirical analysis of 6740 requests for information in Belgian clinical trial evaluations (2017-2024).

The EU Clinical Trials Regulation (CTR) was introduced to harmonize clinical trial evaluations across Member States while upholding participant protection and ethical integrity. This study analyzes 6740 Requests for Information (RFIs) issued by Belgian Medical Research Ethics Committees (MRECs) across 266 trial dossiers evaluated between 2017 and 2024, spanning both the CTR pilot phase and the initial CTIS implementation. Using framework content analysis, we examined the number and content of RFIs in relation to trial outcomes, sponsor type (commercial vs. non-commercial), and the MREC's role

Rastafarianism: When Religious Beliefs Conflict With Medical Necessity-A Case Report and Review of the Literature Around an Ethically Complicated Case.

Background: Rastafarianism maintains that cannabis is a sacred element of the religious practice, and followers of the religion traditionally engage cautiously with western medicine. This case involves Mr. I, a 72-year-old Rastafari male with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and hepatic decompensation, who developed delirium with psychotic features which were initially managed with quetiapine. His family expressed concerns with psychotropic medications and requested using dronabinol, a synthetic cannabinoid, to manage his symptoms considering the spiritual significance of cannabinoids in the R

Care ethics and compassion satisfaction in the palliative care provider experience: narrative review of provider-centered outcomes in palliative care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Provider experience is critical to the acceptance and sustainability of palliative care delivery models. Compassion satisfaction and burnout make up key components of provider wellbeing and therefore serve as important targets for measurement. Exploring the impact of palliative care interventions on provider experience offers significant potential for innovation. This narrative review surveys existing literature regarding provider-wellbeing outcomes in palliative care delivery. Our primary objectives were to examine the factors and interventions that influence compass

Rethinking congenital cytomegalovirus: A narrative review of the clinical, public health, and ethical challenges of a preventable cause of childhood hearing loss.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the most common non-genetic cause of pediatric sensorineural hearing loss, affecting approximately tens of thousands of infants annually in the United States. While cCMV may present symptomatically at birth, many infants are asymptomatic initially and later develop progressive or fluctuating hearing loss, which is often undiagnosed without early screening. Despite advances in diagnostic methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, the absence of a national screening policy in the U.S. results in significant variability in early detection and fol

Recent advances in stem cell therapy: efficacy, ethics, safety concerns, and future directions focusing on neurodegenerative disorders - a review.

Neurodegeneration refers to the gradual loss of neurons and extensive changes in glial cells like tau inclusions in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, α-synuclein inclusions in oligodendrocytes and SOD1 aggregates in astrocytes along with deterioration in the motor, cognition, learning, and behavior. Common neurodegenerative disorders are Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease (HD), spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), and supranuclear palsy. There is a lack of effective treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, and scientists are p

A review of public health, social and ethical implications of voluntary medical male circumcision programs for HIV prevention in sub-Saharan Africa.

Ideally, the benefits of public health interventions should outweigh any associated harms, burdens, and adverse unintended consequences. The intended benefit of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programs in eastern and southern Africa (ESA) is the reduction of HIV infections. We review the literature for evidence of reductions in HIV incidence, evaluate the extent to which decreases in HIV incidence can be reasonably attributed to VMMC programs, and summarize social harms and ethical concerns associated with these programs. Review findings suggest that HIV incidence had been declining

Spirituality and Religiosity in End-of-Life Decision-Making in Intensive Care Units: A Systematic Review of Preferences, Ethical Framing, and Meaning-Making.

End-of-life decision-making in intensive care units (ICUs) is a complex and ethically challenging process shaped not only by clinical factors but also by patients' values, cultural contexts, and spiritual or religious beliefs. Although spirituality and religiosity are increasingly recognized as influential in decisions regarding life-sustaining treatment, their role has not been comprehensively synthesized within ICU settings. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, examined the influence of sp

What are the ethical dilemmas in the decision-making processes of nursing people given electroconvulsive therapy? A critical realist review of qualitative evidence.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: ECT is a treatment which has a long and complicated history. There is no consensus on its effectiveness and there is a great deal of polarized debate as to whether it should be used. MHNs are asked to work with people who are receiving ECT as part of their duties. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The paper seeks to move beyond the polarized arguments and to consider how MHNs can work with people where ECT is being considered or administered as part of their treatment in a manner which satisfies their professional obligations. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE:

OBJECTIVE: Using the example of Pressurized Intra Peritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC), we analyse the development model of this procedure and provide an ethical analysis of the involvement of the industry in a new development. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: In the case of breakthrough innovation, medical training is essential for safe use of the new procedure. In some cases, pharmaceutical companies decide to organise this training. But when it becomes the only training opportunity to use the device, scientists and clinicians could be exposed to a conflict of interest? METHODS: We performed a

Challenges in medically assisted reproduction - Ethics, law and society: An invited scientific review by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG).

Τhe methods of medically assisted reproduction (MAR) are being widely applied all over the world ever since the birth of Louise Brown, the first child conceived after in vitro fertilization (IVF) of a human oocyte and subsequent transfer into the uterus of the ensuing embryo. The possible risks associated with the application of the different MAR methods have given rise to a debate concerning the necessity of a regulatory framework regarding the application of these methods especially in view of the crucial and ambiguous legal and ethical issues attached.

Ethical and legal dilemmas around termination of pregnancy for severe fetal anomalies: A review of two African neonates presenting with ventriculomegaly and holoprosencephaly.

Termination of pregnancy (TOP) or feticide for severe fetal anomalies is ethically and morally challenging and maybe considered illegal in countries with restrictive abortion laws. While diagnostic modalities such as fetal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and genetic screening have improved prenatal diagnosis, these technologies remain scarce in many African countries making diagnosis and counseling regarding TOP difficult. Ethical dilemmas such as women's autonomy rights may conflict with fetus' right to personhood, and doctor's moral obligations to society. In liberal jurisdictions, p

From technological closed-loop to human-machine trust: a systematic review of ethical and communication challenges of brain-computer interface in elderly care.

As the global population ages, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have emerged as a promising technological pathway for restoring communication, motor function, and cognitive support in elderly care settings. However, the ethical and communication challenges accompanying BCI deployment in these contexts remain insufficiently understood. This systematic review identified 177 studies meeting the inclusion criteria from 12,423 records. Through comprehensive analysis, six core ethical themes were identified: privacy and data security, informed consent and autonomy, personhood and identity, technical

Ethical Decision-Making Regarding Life Sustaining Treatment in End-Of-Life Care: A Scoping Review of the Similarities and Differences Between Two Viewpoints.

Decisions on life-sustaining treatment depend on evaluating fundamental ethical principles regarding taking human life. This study aimed to compare the Islamic standpoint with secular views on ethical decision-making in end-of-life care. We conducted a scoping review to analyze and compare articles published in 2000-2022, regarding ethical criteria for withdrawing life-prolonging treatments in dying patients, and the final decision-maker in such cases. The main difference between the two viewpoints, however, lies in the perspective that in Islam to save human life is of utmost importance, and

Clinical, legal and ethical implications of coercion and compulsory treatment in eating disorders: do rapid review findings identify clear answers or more muddy waters?

INTRODUCTION: This Rapid Review (RR) aimed to assess the current literature over the past decade to determine the prevailing evidence regarding compulsory treatment* in eating disorders (ED). It is hoped that the review will help inform a consensus opinion as to whether this course of action confers significant clinical benefit, and importantly, to whom it should apply. The review also explores alternative options to involuntary care. METHODS: Four indexing databases (OVID; ProQuest; Web of Science; PubMed/MedLine) were searched using variations of the following keywords: "coercive/detained/i
