Tracing the origins of Antarctic periwinkles: an integrative morphological-molecular perspective on Laevilacunaria evolution.

In biogeography, related lineages often share similar range sizes and species richness due to inherited traits and shared geographic history. This expectation is based on phylogenetic niche conservatism and shared dispersal constraints. However, within the subfamily Laevilitorininae, this pattern is not observed: Laevilitorina shows broader distributions and higher species richness than Laevilacunaria despite similar developmental mode and habitat preferences. Combining multilocus genetic data, radular morphology and model-based historical biogeography, we aim to understand the origins of thes

Phylogeography and molecular evolution of Newcastle disease virus across a century of global surveillance.

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) remains one of the most economically important avian pathogens worldwide, causing recurrent outbreaks in poultry despite decades of vaccination and disease control efforts. Since the first reported outbreak of NDV a hundred years ago, numerous molecular epidemiological studies have been conducted globally across diverse geographic and production settings. Following a century of NDV circulation and evolution, the present study aimed to compile all publicly available NDV sequence data and perform a comprehensive global analysis of the genetic diversity, phylogenetic

Molecular Evolution and Expression Analysis of the ADH Gene Family in Apple Bud Mutants.

Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) catalyzes the reduction of aldehydes to alcohols, key precursor substrates for volatile ester biosynthesis, which determines the characteristic aroma of apple fruit. However, a comprehensive genome-wide investigation of the ADH gene family in apple has been lacking. In this study, we systematically identified ADH genes in the apple genome using integrated bioinformatics approaches, including phylogenetic analysis, synteny evaluation, promoter cis-element prediction, codon usage bias assessment, and protein interaction network modeling. Expression patterns were exami

Epidemiology and molecular evolution of norovirus GII.17 in the United States, 2021-2025.

BACKGROUND: GII.4 noroviruses have been the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks in the United States (U.S.) for the past decade. Recently, GII.17 viruses have emerged globally, raising concerns about changes in disease burden and potential replacement of GII.4 as the predominant strain. METHODS: We characterized molecular and epidemiological features of U.S. GII.17 norovirus outbreaks from September 2021-August 2025 submitted to CaliciNet. Norovirus-positive outbreak samples were sequenced followed by RdRp and VP1 phylogenetic analyses. CaliciNet and National Outbreak Reporting S

Molecular evolution and geographic migration of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus in Asia.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a recently identified tick-borne virus that has emerged in the twenty-first century. Its primary clinical manifestations include fever and thrombocytopenia, and its high morbidity and mortality rates have garnered significant attention. It is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the spatial and temporal characteristics of SFTSV migration in order to prevent and control this disease. The SFTSV strains from East Asian countries in GenBank during 2017-2023 were collected and analyzed with phylogenetic and Bayesian methods. P

The role of promiscuous molecular recognition in the evolution of RNase-based self-incompatibility in plants.

How do biological networks evolve and expand? We study these questions in the context of the plant collaborative-non-self recognition self-incompatibility system. Self-incompatibility evolved to avoid self-fertilization among hermaphroditic plants. It relies on specific molecular recognition between highly diverse proteins of two families: female and male determinants, such that the combination of genes an individual possesses determines its mating partners. Though highly polymorphic, previous models struggled to pinpoint the evolutionary trajectories by which new specificities evolved. Here,

Conformational evolution following the sequential molecular dehydrogenation of PMDI on a Cu(111) surface.

Molecular spatial conformational evolution following the corresponding chemical reaction pathway at surfaces is important to understand and optimize chemical processes. Combining experimental and theoretical methods, the sequential N-H and C-H dehydrogenation of pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) on a Cu(111) surface are reported. STM experiments and atomistic modeling allow structural analysis at each well-defined reaction step. First, exclusively the aromatic N-H dehydrogenation of the imide group is observed. Subsequently, the C-H group at the benzene core of PMDI gets activated leading to a dehyd

Molecular evolution of the switch for progesterone and spironolactone from mineralocorticoid receptor agonist to antagonist.

The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is highly conserved across vertebrate evolution. In terrestrial vertebrates, the MR mediates sodium homeostasis by aldosterone and also acts as a receptor for cortisol. Although the MR is present in fish, they lack aldosterone. The MR binds progesterone and spironolactone as antagonists in human MR but as agonists in zebrafish MR. We have defined the molecular basis of these divergent responses using MR chimeras between the zebrafish and human MR coupled with reciprocal site-directed mutagenesis and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation based on the crystal stru

RNA editing by the host ADAR system affects the molecular evolution of the Zika virus.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted flavivirus, linked to microcephaly and fetal death in humans. Here, we investigate whether host-mediated RNA editing of adenosines (ADAR) plays a role in the molecular evolution of ZIKV. Using complete coding sequences for the ZIKV polyprotein, we show that potential ADAR substitutions are underrepresented at the ADAR-resistant GA dinucleotides of both the positive and negative strands, that these changes are spatially and temporally clustered (as expected of ADAR editing) for three branches of the viral phylogeny, and that ADAR mutagenesis can be li

Molecular Evolution and Functional Characterization of a Bifunctional Decarboxylase Involved in Lycopodium Alkaloid Biosynthesis.

Lycopodium alkaloids (LAs) are derived from lysine (Lys) and are found mainly in Huperziaceae and Lycopodiaceae. LAs are potentially useful against Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and myasthenia gravis. Here, we cloned the bifunctional lysine/ornithine decarboxylase (L/ODC), the first gene involved in LA biosynthesis, from the LA-producing plants Lycopodium clavatum and Huperzia serrata We describe the in vitro and in vivo functional characterization of the L. clavatum L/ODC (LcL/ODC). The recombinant LcL/ODC preferentially catalyzed the decarboxylation of l-Lys over l-ornithine (l-Orn) by

Molecular epidemiology and evolution of human enterovirus 71 and hand, foot and mouth disease.

Human enterovirus 71(EV71), one of the major pathogens of the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), causes skin rashes in palms, feet and mouth ulcers and complication in the central nervous system such as aseptic meningitis and acute flaccid paralysis that may lead to death. EV71 infection has been reported to be associated with many outbreaks of HFMD worldwide, especially the great outbreaks that occurred in the Asia-Pacific region and caused numerous death since 1997. The studies of molecular epidemiology and evolution of EV71 are important for the prevention and control of HFMD since no vac

Genetic diversity and molecular evolution of the rabies virus matrix protein gene in China.

To investigate the diversity of rabies virus (RABV) matrix protein (M) gene in the current Chinese rabies epidemic, we fully examined M gene of 63 street RABVs (Virus isolated from naturally infected animals), and performed phylogenetic and mutational analysis. Our results indicate that the Chinese RABV M gene is well conserved with 90.6% to 100% amino acid similarity. Analysis of the mutations indicates that the sequences can be divided into four groups with each group defined by distinct substitutions. The PPxY motif and residue E58, which are essential for efficient virus production and pat

Atractaspis aterrima toxins: the first insight into the molecular evolution of venom in side-stabbers.

Although snake venoms have been the subject of intense research, primarily because of their tremendous potential as a bioresource for design and development of therapeutic compounds, some specific groups of snakes, such as the genus Atractaspis, have been completely neglected. To date only limited number of toxins, such as sarafotoxins have been well characterized from this lineage. In order to investigate the molecular diversity of venom from Atractaspis aterrima-the slender burrowing asp, we utilized a high-throughput transcriptomic approach completed with an original bioinformatics analysis

An in silico approach for understanding the molecular evolution of clinically important metallo-beta-lactamases.

Resistance to carbapenem, considered to be the drug of last resort for treating serious enterobacterial infections, is a growing problem. Metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) mediated carbapenem resistance is considered to be clinically most important, since no traditional inhibitors work against them. Hence, we have investigated the changes in drug profile, affinity and binding stability of meropenem with clinically important MBLs viz., IMP, VIM and NDM during the course of molecular evolution. Phylogenetic trees were constructed and amino acids positions, presumed to be exposed to positive selection

[Genetic diversity and molecular evolution of the influenza A viruses in Russia during 2006-2012].

The results of molecular genetic analysis of more than 280 strains of influenza A virus subtypes H1N1 and H3N2 circulating in Russia in 2006-2012 are presented. The genetic changes underlying the evolution of the virus strains and sensitivity to antiviral drugs were analyzed. Significant changes in the genetic structure of influenza A viruses circulating in the Russian Federation and their phylogenetic affiliation are shown to occur within the studied period. The studies identifying codons under the positive selection in silico in the genes encoding surface proteins of the influenza virus were

Molecular evolution of the two-component system BvgAS involved in virulence regulation in Bordetella.

The whooping cough agent Bordetella pertussis is closely related to Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is responsible for chronic respiratory infections in various mammals and is occasionally found in humans, and to Bordetella parapertussis, one lineage of which causes mild whooping cough in humans and the other ovine respiratory infections. All three species produce similar sets of virulence factors that are co-regulated by the two-component system BvgAS. We characterized the molecular diversity of BvgAS in Bordetella by sequencing the two genes from a large number of diverse isolates. The resp

Analysis of the molecular evolution of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from Japanese meats and environment.

Food contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes is a problem on a worldwide level because it is a serious food-borne pathogen. Although 3 evolutionary divisions have been reported for L. monocytogenes, the evolution of Japanese isolates has not yet been clarified. Thus, in order to determine the lineage of these Japanese isolates, we classified and conducted phylogenetic analysis of 407 bp (position 1116-1522) of the iap gene derived from 88 isolates from Japanese listeriosis patients, foods and environment. The isolates were classified into 18 types commonly accompanied by serotypes, and the type

Pineal transducers in the course of evolution: molecular organization, rhythmic metabolic activity and role.

Data on the cell biology of pineal transducers (chief cells: typical and modified photoreceptors, pinealocytes) which belong to the paraneuron family, are reviewed in the vertebrate series. In spite of major changes throughout phylogeny, it is proposed that pineal chief cells share a common feature: they somehow transform the information derived from the light/dark cycle into daily rhythms of neural (an excitatory neurotransmitter) and/or hormonal (melatoninergic) output and appear invariably involved in the temporal organization of physiological and behavioral processes.
