Ammonia (NH3) has been reported as a breath biomarker for chronic kidney disease (CKD) usually detected at concentrations greater than 0.25 parts per million by volume (ppmV). NH3 was detected in breath of individuals with CKD through gaseous photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). The efficiency of hemodialysis (HD) was demonstrated. Eight volunteers aged between 20 and 60 years and without previous respiratory disease were eligible, among which six were control volunteers (CV) and two volunteers with advanced CKD, named CKDV1 and CKDV2. The presence of CKD was confirmed by the calculation of creat

BACKGROUND: Tracheal aspirate is the conventional method to measure biomarkers of inflammation and oxidation from premature infants on mechanical ventilation at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), but this method is invasive. Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a novel, non-invasive method that has been used in older populations. Nitrite, a stable metabolite of nitric oxide (NO), is elevated in inflammatory conditions. We aim to investigate the feasibility of EBC nitrite collection from ventilated premature infants and to quantify EBC nitrite in infants with and without BPD. We hypothesi

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is predominantly caused by asbestos exposure and has a poor prognosis. Breath contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can be explored as an early detection tool. Previously, we used multicapillary column/ion mobility spectrometry (MCC/IMS) to discriminate between patients with MPM and asymptomatic high-risk persons with a high rate of accuracy. Here, we aim to validate these findings in different control groups.Breath and background samples were obtained from 52 patients with MPM, 52 healthy controls without asbestos exposure (HC), 59 asymptomatic fo

It is argued that shortcomings of certain approaches to breath analysis research based on superficial interpretation of non-quantitative data are inadvertently inhibiting the progression of non-invasive breath analysis into clinical practice. The objective of this perspective is to suggest more clinically profitable approaches to breath research. Thus, following a discourse on the challenges and expectations in breath research, a brief indication is given of the analytical techniques currently used for the analysis of very humid exhaled breath. The seminal work that has been carried out using

OBJECTIVE: The factors - including asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis - which influence FeNO values in a general population of school children have been studied in order to know to what extent the variability of those values can be explained.
METHODS: FeNO was measured in a population of 240 school children aged 6-12 years by means of a Niox-Mino™ device in a standardised way. Parents filled in an ISAAC-validated questionnaire of symptoms and environmental factors. Diagnoses were checked against clinical records. Height and weight were measured. A multivariate regression analysis including all va

BACKGROUND: There is very little evidence of the utility of the exhaled fraction of NO (FeNO) for the diagnosis of interstitial lung disease and nearly all of it is related with connective tissue disease. Some authors have suggested that in patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), evolution to pulmonary fibrosis may be mediated by a Th2 mechanism, which could redound in a potential utility of FeNO. The aim of this study was to investigate the values of FeNO before and after antigenic exposure with the specific inhalation challenge (SIC) and to analyze its potential utility for the diag

Fractioned exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a noninvasive marker of inflammation in asthmatic patients. FeNO can be used to monitor airway inflammation, but individual responses make tailored interventions based on FeNO difficult. The correlation between the asthma control test (ACT), FEV1, and FeNO was evaluated in this study to ascertain the correct usage of FeNO with different asthma phenotypes regarding their control, allergy, comorbidity, obesity, age, smoking status, and severity. ACT, pulmonary function, and FeNO in 416 asthmatic patients on combined therapy were retrospective evaluated.

BACKGROUND: The role of exhaled H2S as a marker of airway inflammation and its relationship with COPD severity remain to be determined.
METHODS: Airway inflammation was classified in 77 COPD subjects based on the presence of inflammatory cells in induced sputum. We investigated the association between disease phenotype and exhaled H2S, lung function, and plasma levels of several inflammatory factors, including tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-8, and leukotriene B4.
RESULTS: In total, 33.77% of enrolled COPD subjects were diagnosed with eosinophilia. These subjects had a longer diseas

PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with eosinophilic airway inflammation may represent a unique phenotype, possibly with shared features of COPD and asthma. The role of exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) in identifying COPD patients with sputum eosinophilia was examined in this study.
METHODS: Ninety COPD patients without past medical history of asthma or allergic diseases were prospectively enrolled, and their eNO, lung function, and cellular profile of induced sputum were measured. Eosinophil cationic protein and IgE in sputum and venous blood also were determined. Subjects with

BACKGROUND: Adverse effects of air pollution include respiratory inflammation. A few epidemiologic studies have shown elevations in the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide, a marker of airway inflammation, after exposure to traffic-related pollutants.
METHODS: We examined whether short-term exposures to ozone (O3), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), or particulate matter <10 μm (PM10) were associated with proximal and distal airway inflammation. The study included 5841 randomly selected Swedish adults from 25 to 75 years of age. Fraction of exhaled nitrogen was measured at two flow rates: 50 ml/s represe

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in eating behavior and inflammatory response. Moreover, there is evidence that NO production is altered in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN).
AIM: To assess whether the overproduction of NO in AN can affect NO level in exhaled air.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Exhaled NO level was studied in 23 girls with AN and compared with that of healthy age- and gender-matched nonatopic controls.
RESULTS: Exhaled NO levels were significantly higher in girls with AN compared with healthy age-matched controls.
CONCLUSIONS: It appears that anorexia nervosa was accomp

Various hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have replaced the ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons during the last decades. The objective of this study was to examine the usefulness of blood and breath for exposure biomonitoring of HFCs. We compared data on blood and exhaled air from a series of experiments where healthy volunteers were exposed to vapors of four commonly used HFCs; 1,1-difluoroethane, 1,1,1-trifluoroethane, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, and 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane. All four HFCs had similar toxicokinetic profiles in blood with a rapid initial increase and a

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung diseases (ILD) comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders, and when diagnosed at the stage of pulmonary fibrosis, the underlying lung disease can sometimes be difficult to identify. The aim of the present study was to determine whether there are differences in FENO (fraction of exhaled nitric oxide) between different subtypes of fibrotic ILD.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients, with honeycombing on computed tomography (CT) scan, and whose FENO levels had been measured during chronic dyspnoea evaluation, were divided into four groups based on pulmonary fibrosis aetiolog

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic lower airway inflammatory disease. Nitric oxide is an inflammatory mediator produced endogenously in the airway. Previous studies have demonstrated that the fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is increased in asthma.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate if FeNO concentrations were correlated with wheezing phenotypes in preschool children and to compare the FeNO results with airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and pulmonary function test (PFT) results.
METHODS: We performed skin prick tests, methacholine provocation tests, PFT, impulse oscillometry bronc

INTRODUCTION: The current reference standard method for diagnosing occupational asthma (OA) is specific inhalation challenge (SIC) with the suspected agent. The alternative method is serial peak expiratory flow (PEF) monitoring. Nevertheless, PEF does not have optimal sensitivity and specificity for this purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) pH for the diagnosis of OA.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was performed in 37 subjects with suspected OA. Serial PEF monitoring was carried out for 2 weeks at work and for 2 weeks off wor

BACKGROUND: Acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) is an idiopathic disease characterized by pulmonary eosinophilia. Because the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (Feno) is a surrogate of eosinophilic inflammation, we evaluated the levels, changed treatments, and the diagnostic role of Feno in patients with AEP.
METHODS: Between June 2010 and March 2011, we prospectively enrolled patients at the Armed Forces Capital Hospital who had pulmonary infiltrates and a febrile illness and who were clinically suspected to have AEP. We measured Feno twice at the initial visit (pretreatment) and 2 weeks after

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a non-invasive marker of airway inflammation in asthma and respiratory allergy. Environmental factors, especially indoor and outdoor air quality, may play an important role in triggering acute exacerbations of respiratory symptoms. The authors have reviewed the literature reporting effects of outdoor and indoor pollutants on FeNO in children. Although the findings are not consistent, urban and industrial pollution-mainly particles (PM(2.5) and PM(10)), nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)), and sulfur dioxide (SO(2))-as well as formaldehyde and electric baseboard h
