The Enemy within-Multifocal Tuberculous Abscesses Complicating Dermatomyositis.

Tuberculosis can present with diverse manifestations, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Although cold abscesses can complicate spinal tuberculosis, subcutaneous abscesses due to tuberculosis are considerably uncommon and, unlike cold abscesses, necessitate surgical drainage.1 We present an extremely rare case of disseminated tuberculosis in a patient with subcutaneous involvement mimicking cellulitis.

No recovery of cold complex regional pain syndrome after transdermal isosorbide dinitrate: a small controlled trial.

The microcirculation appears to be impaired in cold chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). This double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial investigated the effect of the nitric oxide (NO) donor isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) on the peripheral blood flow in patients with chronic CRPS. Twenty-four patients received 1% ISDN in Vaseline or a placebo ointment applied to the dorsum of the affected hand four times daily for 10 weeks. The patients participated in a physical therapy program to improve activity. The primary outcome measure was blood distribution in the affected extremity, w

The application of cold-adapted microorganisms in biphenyl biodegradation: Responses and mechanisms to environmental temperature fluctuations.

For the bioremediation of contaminated sites, the efficiency of bioaugmentation depends on the survival capacity of introduced degradative strains in environmental settings. Many isolated strains exhibit poor activity after field application, primarily due to fluctuating environmental conditions, among which diurnal temperature variation represents a significant contributing factor. In this study, cold-adapted bacteria were implemented for biphenyl degradation under realistic environmental temperature fluctuations. The research employed a simplified isolation approach incorporating the limitin

Thermodynamic stability of proteins adapted to extreme temperatures.

Small cold shock proteins from bacteria are model proteins for many biophysical studies as a result of their small size and compact folding. Here we report a stability study of these proteins from the Antarctic psychrophile Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis, the mesophile Escherichia coli and the hyperthermophile Thermotoga maritima. When analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, the three proteins unfolded fully reversibly according to a perfect two-state model, which are strict prerequisites to apply equilibrium thermodynamic equations. The parameters obtained by differential scanning calo

The potential effects of temperature on outpatient visits: a case study in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Climate change is a crucial cause of health issues, as reported in many studies. Temperature is one of the important factors related to extreme weather. Chiang Mai, the center of the north of Thailand, is also affected by temperature changes that have led to many outpatient visits. Better information will help the health service to be well-prepared. This research applied typical meteorological data and solar radiation into the distributed lag nonlinear model and a quasi-Poisson regression model. The "hot effect" and "cold effect" on outpatient visits caused by respiratory diseases, dermatophyt

Role of 99mTc MDP Bone Scan in Delineation of Ischaemic Zone in Cases of Severe Frostbite.

Frostbite or cold burn is the medical condition in which localized damage is caused to exposed skin and subcutaneous tissue due to freezing. Frostbite most likely involves body parts farthest from the heart and those with large exposed areas. At or below 0 °C (32 °F), blood vessels close to the skin start to constrict, and blood is shunted away from the extremities via the physiological feedback action of glomus bodies. This peripheral vasoconstriction helps to conserve core body temperature. In extreme cold, or when certain parts of the body are exposed to cold conditions for long periods, th…

Role of thermo TRPA1 and TRPV1 channels in heat, cold, and mechanical nociception of rats.

A sensitive response of the nervous system to changes in temperature is of predominant importance for homeotherms to maintain a stable body temperature. A number of temperature-sensitive transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels have been studied as nociceptors that respond to extreme temperatures and harmful chemicals. Recent findings in the field of pain have established a family of six thermo-TRP channels (TRPA1, TRPM8, TRPV1, TRPV2, TRPV3, and TRPV4) that exhibit sensitivity to increases or decreases in temperature, as well as to chemical substances eliciting the respective hot or co

Study on the Influence of Temperature and Water Content on the Static Mechanical Properties of Sandstone.

The area of permafrost worldwide accounts for approximately 20% to 25% of land area. In cold-climate regions of China, which are garnering international attention, the study of low-temperature and moisture effects on rock mass mechanical properties is of significant importance. China has a wide area of cold regions. This research can provide a foundation for China's exploration activities in such extreme environments. This paper examines the mechanical behavior of rock specimens subjected to various low temperatures and water contents through uniaxial compression tests. The analysis encompasse

Exploring the role of extreme climate events (ECEs) in the incidence of respiratory disease in South Africa.

In recent decades, escalating extreme climate events (ECEs) have raised significant concerns regarding their effects on public health in South Africa, particularly respiratory illness. This study examined the relationship between ECEs and respiratory health outcomes over a 12-year period (2008-2019). A total of 48 ECEs were analyzed, of which 28 occurred in regions reporting more than 100 medical insurance claims for respiratory diseases. These events included storms, heatwaves, cold waves, floods, and tornadoes. Using a two-week lag period, we assessed their short-term association with respir

Comparative Analysis of Temperature Variations Following Sympathetic Blocks in Warm and Cold Subtypes of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS): A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: The pathophysiological mechanisms of temperature asymmetry differ between patients with warm and cold subtypes of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Consequently, the response to lumbar sympathetic blocks (LSBs) and the resulting temperature improvement may vary between these two subtypes. We aimed to evaluate whether there was a significant difference in temperature elevation following sympathetic blocks in warm versus cold subtypes of CRPS. Methods: We calculated the temperature difference by analyzing forward-looking infrared (FLIR) thermal camera images of the af

Design and optimization of a novel herbosomal-loaded PEG-poloxamer topical formulation for the treatment of cold injuries: a quality-by-design approach.

The spectrum of cold injuries ranges from frostnip, chilblains to severe frostbite. Cold injuries occur upon prolonged exposure to freezing temperature and are pathologically a combination of ice crystal formation in the tissue resulting in inflammation, thrombosis and ischemia in the extremities, often necessitating limb amputation in extreme cases due to tissue necrosis. Severe forms of frostbite are a cause of major concern to patients as well as the treating physician. Due to the lack of effective treatment modalities and paucity of research on prophylaxis and therapeutics of cold injuries

Hydrogen Peroxide Participates in Perception and Transduction of Cold Stress Signal in Synechocystis.

The double mutant ΔkatG/tpx of cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803, defective in the anti-oxidative enzymes catalase (KatG) and thioredoxin peroxidase (Tpx), is unable to grow in the presence of exogenous H2O2. The ΔkatG/tpx mutant is shown to be extremely sensitive to very low concentrations of H2O2, especially when intensified with cold stress. Analysis of gene expression in both wild-type and ΔkatG/tpx mutant cells treated by combined cold/oxidative stress revealed that H2O2 participates in regulation of expression of cold-responsive genes, affecting either signal perception or

CryomiRs: towards the identification of a cold-associated family of microRNAs.

Hypometabolism is a strategy favored by many species to survive extreme environmental stresses such as low temperatures, lack of food sources or anoxic conditions. Mammalian hibernation and insect cold hardiness are well-documented examples of natural models utilizing metabolic rate depression when confronted with such conditions. A plethora of metabolic and molecular changes must occur in these species to regulate this process. A recently discovered family of short non-coding nucleic acids, the miRNAs, is rapidly emerging as a potential modulator of cold tolerance in different species. In thi

Cold hemagglutinin disease in a dog.

Cold hemagglutinin disease, a form of autoimmune hemolytic anemia caused by cold-acting erythrocyte autoantibodies, was diagnosed in a dog. Cold-acting antibodies differ from warm-acting antibodies in several ways, including temperature-dependent reactivity below 32 C. The autoantibody in this case (immunoglobulin M) was in the serum in higher than normal concentrations and was reactive at temperatures approaching freezing. The course of the disease was chronic and was characterized by cyanosis and necrosis of the body extremities. Immunosuppressive therapy with corticosteroids was successful
