Use of sunglasses in public outdoor recreation settings in Honolulu, Hawaii.

PURPOSE: Approximately, 20.5 million Americans (17.2%) older than 40 years have a cataract in at least one eye, and rates are expected to rise to over 30 million by 2020. Wearing sunglasses, especially early in life, may reduce the risk of cataracts. Meanwhile, little is known about the prevalence of wearing sunglasses in the United States, especially in areas with high ultraviolet radiation. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and predictors of wearing sunglasses in public outdoor recreation settings. METHODS: Systematic observations were made at beaches, parks and outdo

Cataracts in retired actinide-exposed radiation workers.

Radiation-induced cataracts are predominantly of the posterior sub-capsular (PSC) type, whereas about 90% of age-related cataracts are of other types. Retired workers, likely to have transuranic body burdens, from three DOE-supported installations were questioned regarding their eye-care history and asked for permission to contact their eye-care providers regarding any cataracts. In 97 cases with lifetime exposure records 20 cases (20.6%) were reported to have PSC cataracts. However, of 24 individuals with recorded lifetime doses of 200-600 mSv, nine (37.5%) had PSC cataracts, compared with 15

Infrared radiation and cataract.

The study was undertaken to determine if occupational exposure to infrared (IR) radiation increases the risk of developing cataract. The study includes epidemiologic investigations of two groups of workers exposed to IR radiation and two groups of non IR-exposed controls. The first investigation included 208 iron and steel workers and 208 controls. For each of the workers, the lifetime IR-exposure was calculated with the help of occupational interviews and measurements of the IR-exposure to their eyes in their jobs. Eye examinations including a detailed slit lamp examination of the lens were m

Facilitators and barriers to protective eyewear acceptance among Indian farmers: a qualitative studyf Judith.

BACKGROUND: Agriculture, one of the most hazardous occupations globally, accounts for a significant proportion of work-related injuries, particularly in developing countries like India. However, lack of awareness and possibly low education levels make farmers in the unorganized sector vulnerable to eye injuries. This study aimed to identify the barriers to and facilitators of protective eyewear among farmers. METHODS: A multicentric study was conducted to assess occupational ocular hazards and preventive strategies among farmers in southern India. The facilitating factors and barriers to spec

Ocular trauma in an iron forging industry in the eastern province, Saudi Arabia.

Occupational accidents occur in industry worldwide, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is no exception. However, accidents are not routinely analyzed in this country and therefore their extent and types remain unknown. The aim of this study was to calculate the rates of ocular injuries in an iron forging factory in the Eastern Province of the KSA. It also aimed at identifying the main causes of injury and the groups at risk. All ocular and non-ocular injuries that occurred during 1991 were reviewed. Data sources were the company's accident report and the employees' medical files. A total of

Decontamination Methods for Reuse of Filtering Facepiece Respirators.

IMPORTANCE: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has proven to be highly infectious, putting health care professionals around the world at increased risk. Furthermore, there are widespread shortages of necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for these individuals. Filtering facepiece respirators, such as the N95 respirator, intended for single use, can be reused in times of need. We explore the evidence for decontamination or sterilization of N95 respirators for health care systems seeking to conserve PPE while maintaining the health of their workforce. OBSERVATIONS: The filtra

A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial of the effect of a radiation-attenuating drape on radiation exposure to endoscopy staff during ERCP.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is associated with radiation exposure to the endoscopist and staff that may be significant in high-volume centers. We investigated whether a radiation-attenuating drape over the fluoroscopy image intensifier reduces radiation exposure during ERCP. METHODS: We performed a prospective, randomized, double-blind trial of 100 therapeutic ERCPs at a tertiary-care university center. Procedures were randomly assigned to groups receiving lead-free radiation-attenuating drapes (n=50) or identical sham drapes (n=50). The drapes were suspe

Civilian pilot exposure to ultraviolet and blue light and pilot use of sunglasses.

Population and animal studies indicate that long-term exposure to short-wavelength visible light and ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes increased risk of certain ocular pathologies such as cataracts and maculopathy. The potential risk to flight crew is unknown. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued guidance to pilots regarding sunglass selection; however, it is not known if this guidance is appropriate given pilots' unique occupational environment. A search and appraisal of the relevant literature was conducted which showed that within the airline pilot population, there is limited e

Farm activities associated with eye injuries in the Agricultural Health Study.

Farmers are at risk for work-related eye injuries, some of which can be very serious. This study describes the farm activities that were related to eye injury in a group of 36 Iowa farmers in the Agricultural Health Study who sustained 40 farmwork-related eye injuries requiring medical advice or treatment. Farm activities of grinding or cutting metal accounted for 11 (27.5%) of the eye injuries, welding for 3 (7.5%), and drilling for 2 (5%). The other 24 eye injuries were related to diverse farm activities. One injury was caused by an animal. Only one injury was caused by a chemical exposure.

Efficacy of light-transmitting eye shields for wound dressing in preventing pediatric emergence agitation following bilateral strabismus surgeries: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Emergence agitation (EA) occurs in preschool children after ophthalmic surgery as eye shields induce visual disturbance. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of light-transmitting eye shields as an alternative to traditional medical gauze eye shields for wound dressing in terms of EA incidence following strabismus surgery. METHODS: We randomly assigned 70 preschool children undergoing bilateral strabismus surgery to receive either light-transmitting (LT group, n = 35) or medical gauze (MG group, n = 35) eye shields upon the completion of surgery. The primary outcome was the differ

Feasibility of articulated arm mounted Oculus Rift Virtual Reality goggles for adjunctive pain control during occupational therapy in pediatric burn patients.

For daily burn wound care and therapeutic physical therapy skin stretching procedures, powerful pain medications alone are often inadequate. This feasibility study provides the first evidence that entering an immersive virtual environment using very inexpensive (∼$400) wide field of view Oculus Rift Virtual Reality (VR) goggles can elicit a strong illusion of presence and reduce pain during VR. The patient was an 11-year-old male with severe electrical and flash burns on his head, shoulders, arms, and feet (36 percent total body surface area (TBSA), 27 percent TBSA were third-degree burns). Use of eyepatches in phototherapy: effects on conjunctival bacterial pathogens and conjunctivitis.

We conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine the effects of eye occlusion on the risk of eye infection in full term newborn infants receiving phototherapy. Among 102 infants whose eyes were occluded with eyepatches, pathogens were isolated from 50 eyes of 33 infants. The positive isolation rate was significantly higher than that of a group of control infants (n = 101) whose eyes were protected by a headbox made of light-proof plastics. Among the latter group pathogens were detected in 22 eyes of 14 infants. In addition significantly more infants in the eyepatches group had purulent

Blood splash injury: an underestimated risk in endourology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mucocutaneous and transconjunctival exposure are important portals for the transmission of blood-borne infections to surgeons and health-care workers. Despite this knowledge, few surgeons or their assistants wear protective equipment for procedures perceived to be affiliated with less risk. This study investigates the potential risk of mucocutaneous and transconjunctival blood splash injury during common laparoscopic and endourologic procedures undertaken using standard video endoscopy equipment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Masks combined with eye shields were consecutively

Suspended onion particles and potential corneal injury in onion harvesters.

The authors suspected that suspended onion particles contributed to corneal ulcers in onion harvesters in southern Taiwan. In the present study, the authors used manikins to study suspended onion particles in fields in an effort to simulate typical conditions experienced by onion harvesters. An animal eye-exposure simulation study was also performed by the authors, who impacted suspended soil grains or onion particles onto the corneas of guinea pigs via aerosol generated from the Palas dispersion nozzle. The average size of 25.9 pm for suspended particles collected during the digging of onions
