Recognition of emotion from subtle and non-stereotypical dynamic facial expressions in Huntington's disease.

Emotion recognition deficits in Huntington's disease (HD) are well-established. However, most previous studies have measured emotion recognition using stereotypical and intense facial expressions, which are easily recognized and artificial in their appearance. By contrast, everyday expressions are often more challenging to recognize, as they are subtle and non-stereotypical. Therefore, previous studies may have inflated the performance of HD patients and it is difficult to generalize their results to facial expressions encountered in everyday social interactions. In the present study, we teste

Impaired facial expression recognition in patients with social anxiety disorder: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate whether social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients have low emotion recognition accuracy, take longer for emotion recognition and tended to interpret a stimulus more negatively than controls. METHODS: Fifty-six SAD patients and 56 healthy controls were participated in this study. We evaluated facial emotion recognition using a computer program in which participants chose one of seven emotions as displayed in each of 55 photographs of faces. We compared the accuracy and reaction times of the patients and controls. We further analysed which emo

Facial emotion recognition, socio-occupational functioning and expressed emotions in schizophrenia versus bipolar disorder.

Facial emotion recognition deficits have been consistently demonstrated in patients with severe mental disorders. Expressed emotion is found to be an important predictor of relapse. However, the relationship between facial emotion recognition abilities and expressed emotions and its influence on socio-occupational functioning in schizophrenia versus bipolar disorder has not been studied. In this study we examined 91 patients with schizophrenia and 71 with bipolar disorder for psychopathology, socio occupational functioning and emotion recognition abilities. Primary caregivers of 62 patients wi

Mapping structural covariance networks of facial emotion recognition in early psychosis: A pilot study.

People with psychosis show deficits recognizing facial emotions and disrupted activation in the underlying neural circuitry. We evaluated associations between facial emotion recognition and cortical thickness using a correlation-based approach to map structural covariance networks across the brain. Fifteen people with an early psychosis provided magnetic resonance scans and completed the Penn Emotion Recognition and Differentiation tasks. Fifteen historical controls provided magnetic resonance scans. Cortical thickness was computed using CIVET and analyzed with linear models. Seed-based struct

Biased recognition of facial affect in patients with major depressive disorder reflects clinical state.

Cognitive theories of depression posit that perception is negatively biased in depressive disorder. Previous studies have provided empirical evidence for this notion, but left open the question whether the negative perceptual bias reflects a stable trait or the current depressive state. Here we investigated the stability of negatively biased perception over time. Emotion perception was examined in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy control participants in two experiments. In the first experiment subjective biases in the recognition of facial emotional expressions were as

Stage-specific changes in schematic facial emotion recognition following childhood trauma: an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma has been linked to emotional face processing, but its association with stages of emotional face processing remains unclear. The present study used schematic emotional facial cues as simplified stimuli and event-related potentials to examine early face sensitive activity and later evaluative processing within this stimulus context. METHODS: Adults with and without childhood trauma completed an emotion classification task with happy, sad, and neutral schematic faces during EEG recording. Reaction times and accuracy were analyzed as behavioral measures. ERP analyses

Enhanced AlexNet with Gabor and Local Binary Pattern Features for Improved Facial Emotion Recognition.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is vital for improving human-machine interactions, serving as the foundation for AI systems that integrate cognitive and emotional intelligence. This helps bridge the gap between mechanical processes and human emotions, enhancing machine engagement with humans. Considering the constraints of low hardware specifications often encountered in real-world applications, this study leverages recent advances in deep learning to propose an enhanced model for FER. The model effectively utilizes texture information from faces through Gabor and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) f

Are you angry? Neural basis of impaired facial expression recognition in pre-manifest Huntington's.

INTRODUCTION: Early non-motor symptoms in Huntington's disease (HD), including visual perceptual difficulties, can have profound negative impacts on quality of life. In particular, deficits in emotion recognition may contribute to misinterpretation of social cues, and may adversely affect interpersonal relationships, work relationships and/or general well-being. This may be particularly salient during the pre-manifest period, a period prior to the onset of motor symptoms. We sought to evaluate impairments in emotion recognition in gene-positive individuals who did not meet criterial for a diag

Facial Emotion Recognition and Emotional Memory From the Ovarian-Hormone Perspective: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: We review original papers on ovarian-hormone status in two areas of emotional processing: facial emotion recognition and emotional memory. Ovarian-hormone status is operationalized by the levels of the steroid sex hormones 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4), fluctuating over the natural menstrual cycle and suppressed under oral contraceptive (OCs) use. We extend previous reviews addressing single areas of emotional processing. Moreover, we systematically examine the role of stimulus features such as emotion type or stimulus valence and aim at elucidating factors that reconcil

Recognition of children's emotional facial expressions among mothers reporting a history of childhood maltreatment.

Several studies have shown that child maltreatment is associated with both positive and negative effects on the recognition of facial emotions. Research has provided little evidence of a relation between maltreatment during childhood and young adults' ability to recognize facial displays of emotion in children, an essential skill for a sensitive parental response. In this study, we examined the consequences of different forms of maltreatment experienced in childhood on emotion recognition during parenthood. Participants included sixty-three mothers of children aged 2 to 5 years. Retrospective

Decision-making and facial emotion recognition as predictors of substance-use initiation among adolescents.

This 4-year longitudinal study examined whether performance on a decision-making task and an emotion-processing task predicted the initiation of tobacco, marijuana, or alcohol use among 77 adolescents. Of the participants, 64% met criteria for an externalizing behavioral disorder; 33% did not initiate substance use; 13% used one of the three substances under investigation, 18% used two, and 36% used all three. Initiation of substance use was associated with enhanced recognition of angry emotion, but not with risky decision-making. In conclusion, adolescents who initiate drug use present vulner

Activation of the right fronto-temporal cortex during maternal facial recognition in young infants.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Within the first days of life infants can already recognize their mother. This ability is based on several sensory mechanisms and increases during the first year of life, having its most crucial phase between 6 and 9 months when cortical circuits develop. The underlying cortical structures that are involved in this process are still unknown. Herein we report how the prefrontal cortices of healthy 6- to 9-month-old infants react to the sight of their mother's faces compared to that of an unknown female face. METHODS: Concentrations of oxygenated haemoglobin [HbO2] and deoxygena

Reduced task adaptation and contextual awareness in autistic adults during facial emotion recognition: evidence from mixed-effects modeling and automated facial analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in understanding facial emotion recognition (FER) in autistic adults in recent decades, the mechanisms underlying FER difficulties in individuals with autism remain unclear, with inconsistent findings across studies. A key limitation may be the reliance on aggregate accuracy scores, which overlook item- and subject-level variability. Here, we investigated the effects of task adaptation and stimulus properties on FER performance in autistic and non-autistic adults using mixed-effects modelling. METHODS: A total of 120 autistic and 116 non-autistic partic

Perspectives on and Utility of DNA Data and Facial Recognition Technologies to Aid Postdisaster Family Reunifications.

Following a disaster, each passing hour and day of family separation erodes children's health and wellbeing. Hospital networks must prioritize expeditious reunifications while safeguarding children, yet despite advances in biometric technologies and data protection, healthcare systems and disaster response organizations are unprepared to integrate biometric tools into postdisaster family reunification strategies. Biometric data (eg, fingerprints, facial images, dental records, DNA data) are deployed routinely for postmortem disaster victim identifications; however, deployment for family reunif

Comparison of Impulsivity, Alexithymia and Facial Emotion Recognition in Schizophrenia Patients With and Without Criminal Records.

INTRODUCTION: Criminal behaviour by people with schizophrenia has been attributed variously to direct effects of the illness, an interplay between clinical features and social circumstances or neither. A difficulty in the interpretation of the relevance of the illness may lie in the focus on the more clearly psychotic features and the relative neglect of emotional dysregulation or deficits in social cognition. We, therefore, aimed to examine whether psychological and social cognitive factors-such as alexithymia, impulsivity, aggression and facial emotion recognition-differ between individuals

The modulatory effects of facial cues and familiarity in face recognition: a behavioral and eye-tracking investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Face recognition is essential for social interaction, yet the extent to which internal facial features and external facial cues contribute to identity recognition remains incompletely understood. In particular, it remains unclear how external appearance changes, such as hairstyle and hair color, influence the recognition of familiar and unfamiliar faces across perceptual and memory-based processing stages. METHODS: This study examined the modulatory effects of external facial cues and face familiarity using behavioral measures and eye-tracking. Thirty-four native Chinese-speakin

Giggle incontinence and facial emotion recognition deficits: a rare condition with a new insight into management.

Giggling incontinence(GI), although uncommon, can have a profound effect on a patient's quality of life, especially in adolescent females. A case study involving a 4-year-old girl who developed urinary incontinence symptoms following a traumatic brain injury from a motor vehicle accident and subsequent loss of her parents highlights the challenges in managing this condition after 4 months. Despite conventional treatments such as pelvic floor exercises and cognitive therapy, the patient's symptoms persisted. Unexpectedly, during facial expression recognition training, the guardian reported a no
