Necrotizing buccal and cervical fasciitis.

A bite wound led to necrotizing fasciitis in the temporal space, the lateral pharyngeal space and the carotid sheath, indicative of a Streptococcus and Bacteroides infection, and was successfully treated with repeated incisions, radical debridement and antibiotic therapy.

[Surgical treatment of necrotizing fasciitis].

We present nine patients with necrotizing fasciitis. Two of them had Fourniers gangrene. Predisposing factors included diabetes mellitus, alcohol and drug abuse. Local signs were redness, swelling and pain rapidly followed by fever and deterioration in the patient's general condition. Soft tissue-gas was observed in all patients. It was found either clinically, on roentgenograms or by CT. Bacteria were found in blood cultures and/or necrotic tissues in all patients. The dominating treatment was radical surgical excision and early reexplorations. Antibiotics, intensive care support and early pa

Necrotizing fasciitis from invasive Phycomycetes.

Invasive phycomycotic fungal infections are life-threatening complications in patients with impaired immune response. A successful outcome usually depends on early aggressive treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has been suggested as adjuvant therapy based on theoretical considerations and in vitro evidence of fungal growth retardation. A standard gas gangrene HBO protocol was used to treat a progressive necrotizing polymicrobial soft-tissue infection of the lower extremity in a patient with normal host defenses. Progression of the fungal infection was stopped only after radical surgical

Necrotizing fasciitis in contused areas.

Four patients are presented who sustained blunt trauma and later developed necrotizing fasciitis in the areas of contusion, associated with the distant locus of sepsis. Three of the cases developed acute renal failure and later died. Early recognition of this condition allows prompt debridement beyond the margins of involved necrotic fascia, followed by wound inspection 8-hourly, and treatment with antibiotics, most recently third-generation cephalosporins, piperacillin, amikacin, and vancomycin.

Necrotizing fasciitis following diagnostic laparoscopy.

A case of necrotizing fasciitis of the abdominal wall, following an uneventful diagnostic laparoscopy in an elderly, diabetic patient is reported. The patient recovered after extensive surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy. The possibility of a lethal infection in patients with impaired immune defense mechanisms is discussed.

Necrotizing fasciitis: a preventable disaster.

Twenty-eight cases of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) were treated in 27 patients. Most commonly these infections were caused by perineal disease, operative procedures, and cutaneous ulcers. Associated chronic diseases were present in 21 patients. Postoperative fasciitis occurred when prophylactic antibiotics were omitted or used inappropriately during clean-contaminated or contaminated procedures and when primary skin closure was done in the presence of intra-abdominal contamination. All but four infections were polymicrobial. The overall mortality rate was 73% (20 of 27). Death was due to persist

Necrotizing fasciitis: an alternative approach.

Three cases of necrotizing fasciitis are presented. The initial management of necrotizing fasciitis remains undisputed. However, following a limited success with a conventional treatment policy, a more radical approach with immediate skin grafting following debridement is suggested.

Necrotizing fasciitis after neonatal circumcision.

A 6-day-old infant had extensive necrotizing fasciitis involving most of the abdominal wall develop after circumcision with a Plastibell device (Hollister, Inc). He survived this life-threatening infection after vigorous cardiovascular support, antibiotic therapy, and aggressive surgical debridement. The diagnosis, bacteriology, and management of necrotizing fasciitis are briefly discussed. The technical aspects and complications of Gomco (Gomco Surgical Manufacturing Corp) and Plastibell circumcision are compared. Strangulation and devitalization of the prepuce is invariably associated with P

Periorbital Necrotizing Fasciitis: Case Presentation.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an aggressive and potentially life-threatening infection of the superficial fascia and surrounding skin, fat, fascia, muscle, and other soft tissue structures. Here, we outline the rare case of a 26-year-old man with a periorbital Streptococcus pyogenes A NF infection. Our case report underscores a unique instance of periorbital NF, distinctively presenting without any predisposing risk factors, shedding light on its presentation, treatment, and pathophysiology.

Breast rescue after necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a dangerous and rapidly spreading infection of soft tissue involving skin, subcutaneous tissue and fascia; muscles can be concerned but often omitted. It's considered as emergency due to its fulminant nature. The necrotizing fasciitis of the breast is exceptional. Management is based on surgical debridement and, in the case of breast, mastectomy in most cases is inevitable. We describe a case-report of breast necrotizing fasciitis with prompt management and with satisfactory cosmetic result owing to dermal autograft.

Photobiomodulation to Treat Necrotizing Fasciitis.

The spread of odontogenic infections associated with comorbidities, such as diabetes mellitus, can result in a potentially lethal complication, with rapid necrosis of the superficial fascia, necrotizing fasciitis. In this case report, a female patient, 52 years old, fasting blood glucose of 303 mg/dL with necrotizing fasciitis associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the left cervical-thoracic region. She was treated with antibiotics, cervicotomy, abscess drainage, and underwent 10 photobiomodulation sessions with 2 weekly applications of the red wavelength laser to correct tissue loss in t

Necrotizing fasciitis associated with malignancy.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare soft-tissue condition with a high mortality rate even with treatment. Diagnosis is challenging due to an absence of specific symptoms at the early stages of clinical presentation. NF is typically associated with traumatic injuries, superficial skin breakdown, and surgical procedures. Diabetes mellitus and immunosuppression also increase the risk of developing NF. NF predominantly occurs in the lower extremities, the peritoneum, and the perineum. Treatments include antimicrobials, supportive care, and surgical source control. It is important for clinicians t

[Necrotizing fasciitis-a surgical emergency].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a fulminant and potentially life-threatening infection of the skin and soft tissue. It is usually caused by a combination of different bacteria and is often due to assumed minor trauma. Clinically, only relatively insignificant skin changes are initially present, such as blistering or erythema. They are often accompanied by excessive pain. In the further course, the massive systemic reaction becomes predominant. The diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis is primarily clinical, which can be supported by laboratory parameters (LRINEC score) and computed tomography imaging. D

Necrotizing fasciitis: A comprehensive review.

Necrotizing soft-tissue infections (NSTIs) are rare but rapidly progressive, life-threatening bacterial infections with high morbidity and mortality. NSTIs include necrotizing forms of fasciitis, myositis, and cellulitis. This article focuses on necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and discusses NF classifications, clinical features, diagnostic approaches, evidence-based treatments, and nursing interventions.
