Fascioliasis hepatica, caused by Fasciola hepatica, is a serious zoonotic parasitic disease, and F. hepatica mainly infects ruminants and occasionally humans. This article presents the diagnosis and treatment of an acute fascioliasis hepatica case with complaints of "abdominal distension and yellowing of skin and sclera for one day", so as to provide insights into clinical diagnosis and treatment of fascioliasis hepatica and avoid misdiagnosis and mistreatment.

Zoonotic trematode infections are an area of the neglected tropical diseases that have become of major interest to global and public health due to their associated morbidity. Human fascioliasis is a trematode zoonosis of interest in public health. It affects approximately 50 million people worldwide and over 180 million are at risk of infection in both developed and underdeveloped countries. The one health paradigm is an area that seeks to address the problem of zoonotic infections through a comprehensive and sustainable approach. This review attempts to address the major challenges in managin…

Ectopic fascioliasis (EF) has direct and indirect effects on both humans and animals. The phenomenon of EF was individual cases in the period from 1950 up to the end of last century. From the period of 2000 up to 2006, plenty of researches were on EF in the developed and undeveloped countries. Nineteen EF cases infected with the immature and few with the mature worms were 13 females and 6 males. Three cases of lymphatic, pleural and breast fascioliasis reached the adults and laid their eggs in a lymph node in the cervical region pleural cavity and breast tissues. Until recent, knowledge about …

Fasciola hepatica, a leaf shaped trematode that is common in cattle, sheep and goats, is acquired by eating raw water plants like watercress or drinking water infected with the encysted form of the parasite. The varied clinical presentations of fascioliasis still make a high index of suspicion mandatory. Besides having a wide spectrum of hepatobiliary symptoms like obstructive jaundice, cholangitis and liver cirrhosis, the parasitic infection also has extrabiliary manifestations. Until recently, extrahepatic fascioliasis has been reported in the subcutaneous tissue, brain, lungs, epididymis, i…

Contamination by fasciolids takes place through ingestion of metacercariae attached to vegetables. Experimental studies were performed with plant-made foods suggesting a role in human contamination in Iran and on the usefulness of potassium permanganate as a preventive tool for killing metacercariae attached to vegetables used in salads in Egypt. In the foods assayed, although viability decreases with time, a high percentage of the metacercariae were still alive 2 and 4 weeks after preparation. Infection of laboratory animals proved that metacercariae kept their infectivity. The 5-minute tests

Fascioliasis is an uncommon hepatobiliary disease in children. Ultrasonographic, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the disease have been thoroughly described in the last decade. These radiological findings play an important role in the differential diagnosis of the disease since it may clinically mimic several hepatobiliary and systemic diseases. We report three children with fascioliasis, emphasizing the radiological findings in both the hepatic and biliary phases of the disease. If radiological findings are not appropriately interpreted, the diagnosis …

Human fascioliasis is distributed worldwide with several foci of high endemicity. Being a rare disease in Europe, we describe here a case in the initial hepatic phase of the disease. Therapeutic and, with reference to the 2 distinct stages of disease, diagnostic standards are discussed.

A well documented case of hepatic fascioliasis (HF), successfully treated with triclabendazole, is reported. Predominant clinical manifestations were fever, marked eosinophilia and abdominal pain. Triclabendazole was given as two single oral doses of 10 mg/kg each. Neither side effects nor clinical or parasitological relapses were seen after three months of follow up. Based on this experience and few other similar reports in the literature, triclabendazole might be a valid therapeutical alternative in the treatment of human fascioliasis.

Fascioliasis, caused by the common liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, is an endemic infection in sheep and cattle in many parts of Australia. Infections in humans in Australia have been reported infrequently and the most appropriate therapy for human fascioliasis remains to be determined. This case report describes a patient with the infection unsuccessfully treated with multiple high doses of praziquantel, mebendazole or albendazole. The infection was successfully eliminated by the administration of triclabendazole in two single doses of 900 mg (12 mg/kg) two days apart. No side effects were obse…

A secondary anemia is characteristic of infections with the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, and previous studies had suggested that proline released by the worm might be involved in producing this condition. In the current study the effect of fascioliasis on erythropoiesis was compared to the effects of proline infusion. Both treatments produced effects characteristic of rapid erythrocyte turnover due to hemolysis. Moreover, infusion of a proline analog into animals with Fasciola or into animals infused with proline prevented the anemia. To our knowledge the production of hemolytic anemia by e…

A limited survey for human infection with F. hepatica was conducted in the mountain region of Corozal, Puerto Rico. This region was selected because bovine fascioliasis was hyperendemic, watercress was grown locally for human consumption, and Lymnaea cubensis snails (an intermediate host for F. hepatica in Puerto Rico) were found in the watercress farms. Of 110 fecal samples examined 12 were positive for F. hepatica. Seven matched serum samples were also positive for F. hepatica antibodies by counterelectrophoresis. Eleven of the 12 infected individuals had a history of eating watercress. This…

Two cases of human fascioliasis in Austria (a 3-year-old boy and a 4-year-ond girl) are reported. A description is given of the clinical picture and the diagnostic procedures employed in the two cases. The importance of the serodiagnosis of fascioliasis is demonstrated, especially in the case of liver flukes; 4 different serological tests, partly of high sensitivity, were performed. After unsuccessful therapy with Resochin both children were treated with dehydroemetine; after a 4-week interval during which no eggs of Fasciola were found in several stool samples from either child, ova were yet …

Summary The character, extent, and localization of perilobular fibrosis were studied in cattle experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica. Such fibrosis is indirectly due to the liver flukes. The regionally localized fibrosis results from cholestasis due to transient occlusion of branches of the biliary tree. In perilobular fibrosis it is possible to distinguish a florid, an intermediate, and an uncomplicated form. The florid phase is marked by proliferation of the biliary epithelium and is followed by infiltration of inflammatory cells.
