Hovering hummingbird wing aerodynamics during the annual cycle. II. Implications of wing feather moult.

Birds usually moult their feathers in a particular sequence which may incur aerodynamic, physiological and behavioural implications. Among birds, hummingbirds are unique species in their sustained hovering flight. Because hummingbirds frequently hover-feed, they must maintain sufficiently high flight capacities even when moulting their flight feathers. A hummingbird wing consists of 10 primary flight feathers whose absence during moult may strongly affect wing performance. Using dynamic similarity rules, we compared time-accurate aerodynamic loads and flow field measurements over several wing …

Comparative cophylogenetics of Australian phabine pigeons and doves (Aves: Columbidae) and their feather lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera).

Host-parasite coevolutionary histories can differ among multiple groups of parasites associated with the same group of hosts. For example, parasitic wing and body lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) of New World pigeons and doves (Aves: Columbidae) differ in their cophylogenetic patterns, with body lice exhibiting higher phylogenetic congruence with their hosts than wing lice. In this study, we focus on the wing and body lice of Australian phabine pigeons and doves to determine whether the patterns in New World pigeons and doves are consistent with those of pigeons and doves from other regions. Using

Chicks from a high and low feather pecking line of laying hens differ in apomorphine sensitivity.

Proactive rodents show a larger behavioral response to apomorphine (APO) than reactive copers, suggesting a more sensitive DA system in proactive individuals. Previously, chicks from a high feather pecking (HFP) and low feather pecking line (LFP) have been suggested to display a proactive and reactive coping strategy, respectively. Therefore, at approximately 4 weeks of age, the behavior of 48 LFP and 48 HFP chicks in response to an APO injection was studied using an open field. Another objective of the present study was to determine whether behavioral variation (in an open field) between HFP

A historical record of mercury contamination in Southern Florida (USA) as inferred from avian feather tissue.

During the late 1980s, the upper trophic-level biota of the Everglades (FL, USA) was recognized as being highly contaminated with mercury (Hg). However, the timing and pattern of that increase is poorly known, and no information is available about mercury contamination in Everglades wildlife prior to 1974. We measured methylmercury concentrations in feathers of white ibises (n = 33), great egrets (n = 7), anhingas (n = 21), and great blue herons (n = 12) from museum specimens collected from 1910 through 1980 and combined them with more recent feather samples collected from live birds (1985-200…

Monitoring of mercury in the mesopelagic domain of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans using body feathers of Bulwer's petrel as a bioindicator.

Global mercury pollution has markedly and consistently grown over the past 70 years (although with regional variations in trends) and is a s … ndicator for the mesopelagic domain. Mercury accumulated by the birds through diet is excreted into feathers during the moulting process in adults and feather growth in chicks, reflecting contamination in the non-breeding and breeding periods, respectively, and hence the influence of different, largely non-overlapping breeding and non-breeding ranges. We s …

Mercury and other metals in feathers of common eider (Somateria mollissima) and tufted puffin (Fratercula cirrhata) from the Aleutian chain of Alaska.

We analyzed arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury, and selenium in the feathers of common eiders (Somateria mollissima) and tufted puffins (Fratercula cirrhata) from Amchitka and Kiska islands (Aleutians). Between species, puffins had 10 times higher chromium (arithmetic mean = 1820 ppb), 7.5 times higher selenium (mean = 6600 ppb), and 3 times higher mercury (mean = 2540 ppb) than eiders. Eiders had significantly higher levels of manganese than puffins. Puffins are higher on the food chain than eiders, which is reflected in their generally higher levels of metals in their feath…

Beak and feather disease virus variant-dependent antibody reactivity in naturally infected psittacine birds.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV, species Circovirus parrot) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), characterised primary by death of nestlings, feather loss and presumed immunosuppression in parrots worldwide. BFDV shows marked genetic heterogeneity, particularly in the open reading frame 2 (ORF2) encoding the capsid protein (Cap), but the impact of this diversity on antibody recognition has not been systematically assessed. In this study, we used seven recombinant Cap proteins derived from ORF2 variants selected to reflect the diversity of BFDV genotypes ci

Chicken feather protein hydrolysate: An alternative for the prevention of indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer formation in rats.

This study examined the anti-ulcer potential of chicken feather protein hydrolysate (Hyd) against indomethacin (Ind)-induced gastric ulcer. Hyd was prepared from feathers by microbial fermentation technique using locally isolated Bacillus licheniformis EYT2 (GenBank accession number: PV612017). Hyd was orally administrated to the rats at the doses of 100 mg/kg BW (low-dose group, Hyd100) and 200 mg/kg BW (high-dose group, Hyd200) before Ind treatment. The effectiveness of Hyd was compared with Ranitidin (Ran). Six experimental groups were designed: Control, Ind, Ran+Ind, Hyd100 + Ind, Hyd200 +…

Variable-interval temporal feathering to optimize organs-at-risk repair for head and neck adaptive radiotherapy.

Background and Purpose: Temporally feathered radiation therapy (TFRT) for head-and-neck cancer (HNC) combines variable-dose intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) subplans to increase organs-at-risk's (OAR) recovery. This study evaluated whether incorporating OAR-specific radiosensitivity into variable rest-time planning can reduce side effects. Materials and Methods: Using radiosensitivity profiles of five OARs (larynx, esophagus, parotid, spinal cord, brainstem), we developed an optimized TFRT (oTFRT) model to maximize OAR recovery by optimizing rest times, guided by the linear-quadrat

Effects of Ligilactobacillus salivarius on the control of pullorum disease and cecal microbiota in red-feathered native chickens.

Pullorum disease (PD), caused by Salmonella Pullorum (SP), remains a persistent challenge in native chicken production in Asia. Recurrent outbreaks and reliance on antibiotics have raised concerns about antimicrobial resistance. This study established a reproducible clinical PD model in red-feathered native chickens (RFCs) and evaluated Ligilactobacillus salivarius (LS) as a potential alternative to antibiotic. Oral administration of a field SP isolate (SPB6) at 1 × 10⁸ CFU per chick for four consecutive days induced typical PD signs and persistent bacterial colonization, whereas a single-dose

Hemp Seed-Derived Exosomes Protect Against Dihydrotestosterone-Induced Chicken Feather Growth Inhibition.

Background/Objectives: Androgenetic alopecia suppresses hair follicle growth. This occurs via dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which inhibits key molecular pathways such as Wnt/β-catenin and Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling. Exosomes derived from plant callus cultures are promising biomaterials for targeted delivery and regenerative medicine. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of hemp seed callus-derived exosomes (E40) against DHT-induced inhibition of feather follicle development in a chicken embryo model. Methods: E40 exosomes were isolated and purified from the calli of germinat

A Comparative Review of the Pharmacology of Dalbavancin and Oritavancin for Gram-Positive Infections: Birds of a Feather or Apples and Oranges?

The clinical landscape of Gram-positive infections has been reshaped with the introduction of long-acting lipoglycopeptides, particularly dalbavancin and oritavancin. Both agents share broad-spectrum activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant strains, yet differ markedly in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, resistance profiles, and clinical adoption. This review presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of their structural innovations, distinct pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics, and dual

The Glutamatergic System Regulates Feather Pecking Behaviors in Laying Hens Through the Gut-Brain Axis.

Feather pecking (FP) is a significant welfare and economic problem in laying hen husbandry. While there is growing evidence that the glutamatergic system plays a crucial role in regulating FP behavior, the biological mechanisms remain unclear, largely due to the limited uptake of peripheral glutamate across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, we applied a multi-omics approach combined with physiology assays to answer this question from the perspective of the gut-brain axis. A total of 108 hens were randomly assigned to two groups (treatment and control) with six replicates each, and the treat

Research note: Expert opinions of feather sucking and licking behavior in meat chicken breeder birds.

Feather sucking, or feather licking, has been reported anecdotally by employees in the Australian meat chicken breeder industry, but scarcel … that it was "normal" and had no impact on welfare, to concerns about mating injuries due to damaged feathers, increased risk of feather pecking and cannibalism, and psychological stress indicated by expression of repetitive (seemingly) functionless behavior. "Feather licking," "feather sucking," "feather eating," and "feather pecking" were terms used inter …
