This study investigated the physiological responses to wearing a standard firefighter ensemble (SE) and a prototype ensemble (PE) modified from the SE that contained additional features, such as magnetic ring enclosures at the glove-sleeve interface, integrated boot-pant interface, integrated hood-SCBA facepiece interface, and a novel hose arrangement that rerouted self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) exhaust gases back into the upper portion of the jacket. Although the features of the PE increased the level of encapsulation of the wearer that could lead to increased physiological stress

Objectives Firefighters are repeatedly confronted with critical incidents (CIs) at work, which are events that significantly disrupt an individual's normal functioning (e.g. failed interventions, serious accidents, media criticism). Repeated exposure to such incidents increases their vulnerability to developing post-traumatic stress injuries (PTSIs). In Canada, approximately 30% of firefighters meet the clinical thresholds for at least one PTSI; the most commonly observed being depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, alcohol use, and suicidal ideations. The objectives of th

This study investigated predictors of psychomotor vigilance recovery across a six-day inter-tour rest period separating two consecutive duty tours in a sample of career firefighters. Thirty-five firefighters [M age: 38 yrs (SD = 9.2 yrs)] took psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) tests at the beginning of a six-day recovery period and after beginning their next tour; each tour consisted of five, non-consecutive, 24-hour shifts. During the recovery period, subjects wore a wrist-worn actigraph (Actiwatch-2) and completed a sleep diary. Mixed analysis of covariance was employed to test whether change

INTRODUCTION: Firefighting continues to be among the most hazardous yet least studied occupations in terms of the impact of exposure to occupational disease. In particular, firefighters are at increased risk of adverse health effects due to exposure to significant levels of potentially harmful substances, namely carbon monoxide, particulate matter and formaldehyde, during their professional duties. This paper reports an epidemiologic study aiming to reduce the gaps in assessing the long-term effects of air pollution exposure to forest fires' combat on firefighters, namely regarding chronic obst

Multiple exposures to life-threatening events may lead to various mental health issues and indirectly affect the marriage of those affected. Very few studies have investigated trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and marital conflicts among firefighters, a group that faces such exposure occupationally. The present study explores the relationship between trauma exposure, PTSD, and depression in relation to marital conflicts among firefighters in Sarawak, adopting a cross-sectional research design. Different marital status reported significant PTSD and depr

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the leading cause of death in firefighters. Although on-duty SCD usually occurs in older victims almost exclusively because of coronary heart disease, no studies have examined causation across the career span. In the present retrospective case-control study, cases of SCD in young (aged ≤45 years) firefighters from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health fatality investigations (n = 87) were compared with 2 age- and gender-matched control groups: occupationally active firefighters (n = 915) and noncardiac traumatic firefighter fatalities (n = 56).

PURPOSE: To identify and characterize the physically demanding tasks undertaken during multi-day wildfire (known as bushfire in Australia) suppression by Australian rural firefighters.
METHODS: During semi-structured group interviews, thirty-one experienced male firefighters reviewed 53 firefighting tasks that could be performed during tanker-based bushfire suppression. Participants were asked to nominate the most physically demanding tasks and then define their typical frequencies, durations, operational importance and the dominant actions and activity types in each task.
RESULTS: Seven tas

Wildland and wildland-urban interface (W/WUI) fires are increasing in frequency and intensity, increasing concerns about firefighters' exposure to hazardous smoke and the need for respiratory protection. This qualitative study explored the perspectives of California fire service personnel on the use of respiratory protective devices (RPDs), particularly powered air-purifying respirators, and a potential Cal/OSHA regulation mandating their use in W/WUI firefighting. Participants were experienced in W/WUI firefighting and had some role in their fire department related to respiratory protection o

BACKGROUND: A 2022 International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Working Group concluded that occupational exposure as a firefighter causes mesothelioma and bladder cancer. Evidence for causality of other cancers was considered limited or inadequate, but methodologic limitations may have contributed to inconsistent or null findings from previous studies. The present analysis uses data from >470 000 men enrolled in a general population, prospective cohort to assess associations between occupation as a firefighter and cancer mortality.
METHODS: Multivariable hazard ratios (HR) and 95% conf

Chronic psychological stress is known to influence immune function and contribute to development of autoimmune disorders through dysregulated inflammatory responses. This study investigates relationships between acute stress, life trauma, and autoimmune salivary biomarkers in firefighter recruits during psychophysical stress training. Salivary samples were collected from firefighter recruits during two stress tests to evaluate responses to acute stress. Samples were obtained at three time points-pre-stress, post-stress, and recovery-across both tests. Cortisol was measured to characterize acut

OBJECTIVE: Exposure of emergency service personnel to disasters can lead to significant mental health challenges. The psychological impact of intentionally caused disasters, such as terrorist attacks, tends to be more severe than that of natural disasters. While much research has focused on terrorist attacks, little is known about the effects of intentional vehicular assaults (IVAs). This study examines the impact of an IVA on the mental health of firefighters. We hypothesized that firefighters deployed to the scene (deployed group (DG)) would experience more mental health problems compared to

Muscle fatigue is one of the leading causes that contributes tremendously to injuries among volunteer firefighters in the workplace. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of positive-pressure breathing apparatus on muscle fatigue in the shoulder, back, and legs of volunteer firefighters. A total of 60 volunteer firefighters were recruited to perform a running task on a motorized treadmill in a controlled laboratory environment. Surface electromyography and rating of perceived exertion scores were collected from all participants every 60 seconds during the running task. Result

The study aimed to examine physiological responses of firefighters performing a firefighting simulation test (FST) and to determine the relationship between physical fitness parameters and FST performance. Aerobic fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and anaerobic capabilities were evaluated in 37 firefighters (21-profesionals and 16-volunteers firefighters). Furthermore, participants carried out the FST during which we measured performance, respiratory gas exchange, heart rate (HR), perceived exertion and blood lactate concentrations. Males were significantly faster than females fo
