Compensatory eye movement and gaze fixation upon passive head- and body rotation and active head rotation.

To detect differences in compensatory eye movement and gaze fixation, normal subjects and patients with bilateral loss of labyrinthine functions were subjected to passive head-and-body rotation and performed active head rotation. In normal subjects, there was no difference between passive and active rotation with respect to compensatory eye movement in the dark and spatial gaze fixation; on the other hand, the ability to gaze fixedly on a head-fixed target was better during passive than active rotation. In our patients, the findings obtained upon passive rotation resembled those already report

Fibrin Sealant-Assisted Fixation of an Autologous Iliac Bone Graft in Orbital Floor Reconstruction.

Orbital floor fractures can lead to enophthalmos and diplopia, often requiring surgical intervention to restore orbital volume. Autologous iliac bone grafts are commonly used due to their biocompatibility and mechanical stability, but achieving adequate fixation remains a challenge. Traditional fixation methods, such as plates and screws, may introduce risks of foreign body reactions, graft displacement, and surgical morbidity. This case report describes a novel technique utilizing fibrin tissue adhesive for the fixation of an autologous iliac bone graft in a 50-year-old male with post-traumat

Patterns of small involuntary fixation saccades (SIFSs) in different neurodegenerative diseases: the role of noise.

During the attempt to steadily fixate at a single spot, sequences of small involuntary fixation saccades (SIFSs, known also as microsaccades οr intrusions) occur which form spatio-temporal patterns such as square wave jerks (SWJs), a pattern characterised by alternating centrifugal and centripetal movements of similar magnitude. In many neurodegenerative disorders, SIFSs exhibit elevated amplitudes and frequencies. Elevated SIFS amplitudes have been shown to favour the occurrence of SWJs ("SWJ coupling"). We analysed SIFSs in different subject groups comprising both healthy controls (CTR) and

Eye position-dependent opsoclonus in mild traumatic brain injury.

Opsoclonus consists of bursts of involuntary, multidirectional, back-to-back saccades without an intersaccadic interval. We report a 60-year-old man with post-concussive headaches and disequilibrium who had small amplitude opsoclonus in left gaze, along with larger amplitude flutter during convergence. Examination was otherwise normal and brain MRI was unremarkable. Video-oculography demonstrated opsoclonus predominantly in left gaze and during pursuit in the left hemifield, which improved as post-concussive symptoms improved. Existing theories of opsoclonus mechanisms do not account for this

The remnants of crossed fixation observed in teenaged children with esotropia.

PURPOSE: To report 2 cases of teenage children with esotropia from a much earlier age, displaying remnants of crossed fixation with special reference to Helmholtz's theory that each eye is controlled independently and Hering's Law of equal innervation. CASE REPORTS: Case 1 had paretic and partially accommodative esotropia that was first observed at 11 months of age; and Case 2 had accommodative esotropia with an onset at age 3 years. Both cases had hypermetropia and good corrected visual acuity in both eyes. They were able to fixate independently with each eye but the dominant eye always cont

Visual resolution limits in human albinism.

The effects of the involuntary ocular oscillations on visual resolution was examined in 22 albinos and 11 idiopaths with congenital nystagmus. The idiopaths showed a linear relationship between the proportion of the slow phase spent at low velocities (less than or equal to deg/sec) and the log of the minimum angle of resolution; such that long dwell times were compatible with good resolution. For the albinos there appeared to be a critical duration of low retinal slip velocities above which there was no improvement in acuity. This supports the contention that factors other than the congenital

Interocular Suppression in Primary Visual Cortex in Strabismus.

People with strabismus acquired during childhood do not experience diplopia (double vision). To investigate how perception of the duplicate image is suppressed, we raised two male monkeys with alternating exotropia by disinserting the medial rectus muscle in each eye at age four weeks. Once the animals were mature, they were brought to the laboratory and trained to fixate a small spot while recordings were made in primary visual cortex (V1). Drifting gratings were presented to the receptive fields of 500 single neurons for eight interleaved conditions: (1) right eye monocular; (2) left eye mon

[Deep amblyopia and postural prisms].

Physiopathology of amblyopia and adaptative mechanisms of postural system should be considered among strabismic amblyopia with excentric fixation. Such patients have a "Body Image" of postural dissymetry which ocular torticollis is only caricatural. A symptomatical therapy, as modification of postural tonus regulation, is justified by the hypothesis that excentration of the fixation should be compare to postural dysregulation. This paper report four cases of amblyopia (children and adults) already treated by classical methods without results who obtained ameliorations by a combined ophthalmolo

Vision dominates sound in mediating classic cue-induced microsaccadic eye movement modulations in rhesus macaque monkeys.

Visual onsets in the environment cause a short-latency reduction in saccade generation likelihood. Concomitant with that, the metrics of the saccades that do happen near the time of saccadic inhibition reflect the landscape of stimulus-driven neural responses in topographically organized brain maps. Although certain aspects of saccadic inhibition have already been explored from a neurophysiological perspective, several questions remain, including which sensory-motor pathways propagate visual input information to the final oculomotor control circuitry with such short latencies. Here, motivated

Modeling gaze position-dependent opsoclonus.

Opsoclonus/flutter (O/F) is a rare disorder of the saccadic system. Previously, we modeled O/F that developed in a patient following abuse of anabolic steroids. That model, as in all models of the saccadic system, generates commands to make a change in eye position. Recently, we saw a patient who developed a unique form of opsoclonus following a concussion. The patient had postsaccadic ocular flutter in both directions of gaze, and opsoclonus during fixation and pursuit in the left hemifield. A new model of the saccadic system is needed to account for this gaze-position dependent O/F. We start

Gaze stability in the elite athlete: A normative observational study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to clearly perceive an object while the head is in motion is important in athletics, as it relates to performance and potentially to injury prevention. Normative data for healthy adults on measures of gaze stability have been established. However, data for elite athletes is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To describe performance of elite athletes on computerized gaze stability testing and establish normative data for reference. METHODS: Data were acquired via retrospective chart review. 134 male professional baseball players completed computerized Visual Acuity, Visual Perception

The influence of unilateral uncorrected astigmatism on binocular vision and fixation disparity.

PURPOSE: It is accepted practice to use a spherical equivalent power as an alternative contact lens correction for those patients with lower amounts of astigmatism, allowing for an easier fit, but the blur caused by one diopter of uncorrected astigmatism can reduce acuity of 6/6 to that of about 6/8. This is usually deemed acceptable monocularly, often retaining a good binocular acuity. The purpose of this study is to explore how monocular astigmatic blur may also affect the patient's binocular vision function. METHODS: A trial frame was outfitted with full correction for 20 healthy subjects

Ocular motor dysfunction in Lesch-Nyhan disease.

Eye movements were assessed in 22 patients with varying degrees of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency. Ocular motility was clinically normal in seven patients with moderate enzyme deficiency but grossly abnormal in 15 patients with severe enzyme deficiency. In patients with severe deficiency, fixation was interrupted by frequent unwanted saccades toward minor visual distractions. Voluntary saccades were associated with an initial head movement and/or eyeblink in all of these patients. When head motion was prevented, voluntary saccades were often delayed and sometimes abs

Dizziness in discus throwers is related to motion sickness generated while spinning.

While both discus and hammer throwing involve rotating movements resulting in the throw of an object, discus throwers sometimes report dizziness, a condition never experienced by hammer throwers. We investigated whether this susceptibility was related to the sensitivity of the thrower or to the type of throwing achieved. For the latter, we compared the determining features of gesture, gaze stabilization and projectile trajectory in both sports. A total of 22 high-level sportsmen in these 2 disciplines, half of them practising both sports, were interviewed. Slow motion video recordings of discu

[Vertical vergence in convergence].

PURPOSE: To report on a 7-year-old boy with a small left-over-right deviation (-VD) which increased when the head was tilted to the left shoulder and during convergence. METHODS: The squint angles were measured by the unilateral and alternate prism cover test at distance and near fixation when the head was in ortho-position and when it was tilted. RESULTS: At distance fixation (D) there was a latent deviation of-VD 3 degrees. With near fixation (N) at 0.3 m the vertical phoria increased to-VD 18 degrees. The angle of deviation was not influenced by (N) convex lenses in front of the fixating

Unilateral congenital ptosis and amblyopia.

Amblyopia was detected in 15 of 55 children with unilateral congenital ptosis. Anisometropia was the main cause of the amblyopia in 10 cases, and strabismus alone was the cause in 2 cases. In three cases amblyopia developed after ptosis surgery.

Proximal and accommodative convergence and age.

The authors have estimated the phoria for distant and near fixation in two groups of subject (mean age 27. 5+/- 4.4 and 59.2 +/- 8.2 years). Different accommodative stimuli were induced by adding minus lenses for distant fixation and plus lenses for near fixation. Statistical analysis of the experimental data indicates that, for distant fixation, the value of phoria per unit of accommodative stimulus is significantly lower presbyopic than in nonpresbyopic subject. Also, during near fixation, the accommodative convergence (AC/A ratio) is more reliable in the presbyopic subjects when the accommo

Fixation of disparity: a steady state error of disparity-induced vergence.

Fusional vergence eye movements are controlled by a fast-acting mechanism that aligns the eyes in response to retinal image disparity and a slow-acting mechanism that sustains binocular alignment. These two control mechanisms are distinguished by their decay time constants and stimuli. Fast fusional vergence responds to retinal image disparity, and slow fusional vergence responds to the effort or output of the fast control mechanism. Fixation disparity is modeled as a steady-state error of fast fusional vergence. Fixation disparity is shown to be inversely related to prism adaptation, a manife

Smooth pursuit eye movements in patients with ocular motor nerve palsies: a preliminary report.

The trajectories, velocity, and co-ordination of smooth pursuit eye movements were investigated in 30 patients with ocular motor nerve palsies (including palsies of cranial nerves III, IV and VI). The recordings of horizontal and vertical eye movements were obtained by video-oculography under monocular viewing conditions. During the recordings, horizontal, vertical, and oblique target movements of 10 degrees /s constant velocity were presented to the subjects in succession. In contrast to normal subjects, smooth pursuit eye movements in patients with ocular nerve palsies showed considerable di
