Quantification of Task-Specific Glucose Metabolism with Constant Infusion of 18F-FDG.

UNLABELLED: The investigation of cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (CMRGlu) at baseline and during specific tasks previously required separate scans with the drawback of high intrasubject variability. We aimed to validate a novel approach to assessing baseline glucose metabolism and task-specific changes in a single measurement with a constant infusion of 18F-FDG. METHODS: Fifteen healthy subjects underwent two PET measurements with arterial blood sampling. As a reference, baseline CMRGlu was quantified from a 60-min scan after 18F-FDG bolus application using the Patlak plot (eyes closed). F

Quantification of Dynamic [18F]FDG Pet Studies in Acute Lung Injury.

PURPOSE: This work aims to investigate lung glucose metabolism using 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose ([(18)F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in acute lung injury (ALI) patients. PROCEDURES: Eleven ALI patients and five healthy controls underwent a dynamic [(18)F]FDG PET/X-ray computed tomography (CT) scan. The standardized uptake values (SUV) and three different methods for the quantification of glucose metabolism (i.e., ratio, Patlak, and spectral analysis iterative filter, SAIF) were applied both at the region and the voxel levels. RESULTS: SUV reported a lower correlatio

[18F]-FDG positron emission tomography--an established clinical tool opening a new window into exercise physiology.

Positron emission tomography (PET) with [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is an established clinical tool primarily used to diagnose and evaluate disease status in patients with cancer. PET imaging using FDG can be a highly valuable tool to investigate normal human physiology by providing a noninvasive, quantitative measure of glucose uptake into various cell types. Over the past years it has also been increasingly used in exercise physiology studies to identify changes in glucose uptake, metabolism, and muscle activity during different exercise modalities. Metabolically active cells transport

Positron emission tomography in spinal infections.

Magnetic resonance imaging is the imaging method of choice for diagnosing infection of the spine in unoperated cases. 2-[(18)F]-fluoro-2deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography study is recommended to distinguish between spinal infection and common Modic change in patients with metallic implants and prosthetic replacements and for differentiating tuberculous from pyogenic spondylitis in ambiguous cases, reflecting the activity of the infection. Also, it seems to have a strong clinical impact in more than half of patients with infectious spondylitis, while it is superior

[Positron emission tomography with (18)F-FDG in the evaluation of patients with rheumatoid arthritis--a systematic review].

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease characterized by inflammation of the synovial membrane. Several authors have investigated the role of positron emission tomography (PET) with fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) in RA. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the current literature on the role of (18)F-FDG PET in the diagnosis, determination of disease activity and assessment of treatment response in patients with RA. METHODS: Searches were conducted in Medline, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, Pubmed and Scopus in Portuguese, English and Spanish languages, using the keywords

Cerebral glucose metabolism, clinical, neuropsychological, and radiological profile in patients with corticobasal syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is characterized by progressive asymmetric rigidity and localized cortical disorders namely apraxia, cortical, sensory loss, focal dystonia, and refractory to levodopa treatment. AIM: To study the cerebral glucose-metabolism, cognitive, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features in patients with CBS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen consecutive patients with CBS who fulfilled the criteria proposed by Lang et al., were studied. A detailed neurological including higher cortical functions and Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) on and off

Increasing importance of 18F-FDG PET in the diagnosis of neurolymphomatosis.

Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is a rare clinical entity that is defined as infiltration of the nervous system by a known or unknown haematological malignancy and is difficult to diagnose. Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET imaging is increasingly being used in haematological malignancies. This article focus on the role of 18F-FDG PET in the diagnosis and management of NL by presenting a review of cases described in the literature. Reports on NL that used PET with or without computed tomography (CT) as a diagnostic modality were extracted from Medline and evaluated. A total of 58 patients d

Diagnostic performance of ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in giant cell arteritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and perform a meta-analysis on the diagnostic performances of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) for giant cell arteritis (GCA), with or without polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched for articles in English that evaluated FDG PET in GCA or PMR. All complete studies were reviewed and qualitatively analysed. Studies that fulfilled the three following criteria were included in a meta-analysis: (1) FDG PET used as a diagnostic tool for GCA and PMR;

Clinical molecular imaging with PET agents other than 18F-FDG.

Molecular imaging represents an extremely important advancement in patient care and numerous agents have been developed and are being studied. Hundreds of molecular imaging agents currently exist for use in multiple modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, optical imaging, general nuclear medicine and positron emission tomography (PET). In PET, only a very small percentage of these agents are being used clinically in humans and more show promise for clinical use in the short-term future. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief overview
