History of veterinary public health in the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa.

Brucellosis, rabies, salmonellosis, anthrax and hydatidosis are among the main zoonotic diseases which constitute a threat to human health and welfare. Surveillance, prevention and control of such zoonoses and related food-borne diseases are problems of considerable magnitude. Despite their obvious importance, relatively few systematic control efforts have been made by national authorities. Major constraints include the scarcity of public health veterinarians and related sub-professional staff to plan and implement adequate surveillance and control of zoonoses, and the lack of appropriate legi

Transforming faith-based food pantries in the South Bronx into multiservice health centers.

Could faith-based food pantries evolve into vital multiservice health centers? In the United States, the South Bronx is the poorest urban congressional district in New York State and experiences significant food insecurity alongside pronounced public health disparities. While food pantries provide nutritional support temporarily, they rarely address the complex social determinants of health that contribute to chronic disease. This paper examines the feasibility, opportunities, and systemic barriers associated with transforming faith-based food operations into integrated, culturally sensitive h

Integrating macro- and meso-level perspectives on school nutrition programs in Dubai: a joint display mixed methods integration study.

BACKGROUND: School Nutrition Programs (SNPs) are increasingly recognized as essential public health interventions that influence children's health, educational attainment, wellbeing, and future non-communicable disease risk. While previous studies in Dubai explored stakeholders' macro-level perceptions regarding the upscaling of SNPs and quantitatively characterized SNPs implementation across schools, the integrated understanding of how policy-level aspirations align with school-level realities remains limited. Generating such an integrated understanding is essential for informing implementati

Assessing essential needs expressed by breast and gynecological cancer patients with food insecurity.

Food insecurity poses a challenge for cancer patients, who must maintain adequate nutrition during treatment. This study analyzed data from 295 low-income participants in the NCI-funded Food to Overcome Outcome Disparities trial to examine the overlap between degree of food security and other essential needs. Patients with very low food security reported greater financial toxicity from cancer care and lived in more disadvantaged areas than those with low food security. Financial, supportive service, and housing needs were highly expressed among participants, particularly those with very low fo

Improving the nutritional quality of charitable meals for homeless and vulnerable adults. A case study of food provision by a food aid organisation in the UK.

The prevalence of homelessness in the UK is rising, and demand for food aid through charitable meal services has increased. Charitable services make a substantial contribution to the food and nutrient intake of vulnerable people, and thus offer a platform for dietary improvement. This study examined food provision by a large charitable organisation in a major UK city. It had several objectives: Firstly to quantify nutritional composition of breakfast and lunch meals, secondly to understand factors that influence the composition of menus and meals, and thirdly to determine whether, within the c

The Interplay Between Summer Meals, Food Insecurity, and Diet Quality Among Low-Income Children in Maryland, USA: A Multiphase Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Food insecurity and poor diet quality disproportionately affect U.S. children from low-income households, with summer school closures exacerbating risks. Federally funded programs like the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and SUN Bucks (Summer EBT) aim to address these challenges, yet evidence of their post-pandemic dietary impact remains limited. Objectives: This study examines the relationship between policy innovations, summer meal participation, food insecurity, and diet quality among children from low-income households in Prince George's County, Maryland. Methods: A cross-se

Prevalence Trends of Foodborne Pathogens Bacillus cereus, Non-STEC Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in Ready-to-Eat Foods Sourced from Restaurants, Cafés, Catering and Takeaway Food Premises.

Foodborne pathogens of Bacillus cereus (B. cereus), non-STEC Escherichia coli (non-STEC E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are currently non-notifiable in Australia unless attributed to a food poisoning outbreak. Due to the lack of data around individual cases and isolations in foods, any changes in prevalence may go undetected. The aim of this study was to determine any changes in the prevalence of B. cereus, non-STEC E. coli and S. aureus in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods sampled from Western Australian restaurants, cafés, catering facilities and takeaway food premises from July 2009 t

Allergic reaction to sulfiting agents.

Sodium metabisulfite (MBS) is a commonly used food and drug preservative. We report the case of a 32-year-old man with a documented history of allergy to MBS who developed an anaphylactic reaction after ingestion of MBS-treated foods. The patient had a prolonged clinical course requiring two emergency department visits and three weeks of outpatient steroid therapy. It is believed that this patient's relapse and delayed recovery may have been related to his continued exposure to sulfites during treatment. The emergency physician should be aware that some medications commonly used to treat aller

Can ICT-based extension partially substitute for weak institutional service delivery? Evidence from smallholder dairy farms in Ethiopia.

Smallholder dairy farmers in Ethiopia face low productivity and food insecurity, in part due to limited use of artificial insemination (AI) and overstretched extension systems. Artificial insemination (AI) requires accurate estrus detection, timely communication, and quick technician response, which are difficult to achieve in rural areas with limited service. This study analysed how ICT-based extension is associated with partial substitution for weak institutional service delivery to improve AI adoption and use, milk productivity, and food security in central Ethiopia. We use survey data from
