[Spastic equinus foot].

Pes equinus is the most common deformity in cerebral palsy. A primarily dynamic pes equinus without shortening of the calf muscle in many cases turns into a structural pes equinus. This is due to insufficient linear growth of the calf muscle compared to bone growth. Structural pes equinus has to be distinguished from marked, compensatory and forefoot pes equinus. Conservative as well as operative treatment options are often applied in combination or sequentially. In dynamic pes equinus botulinum toxin A is the therapy of choice. Only slight structural pes equinus may improve under botulinum to…

[Congenital club foot].

Congenital club foot is the most frequent foot deformity. It occurs in 1% of newborns, two times more frequently in boys, with family inheritance. Patoanatomicaly, entity consists of bone deformities, articular malpositions and soft tissues retraction. All these produce adduction of the forefoot and varus and equinovarus of the hindfoot. Lateral side of the foot is convex and medial side is concave. Forefoot is in adduction and plantar flexion in relation to the hindfoot. The heel is rotated medialy which induces varus and eqinus of the foot. The aim of the treatment is to establish anatomical…

[Congenital club foot].

Congenital talipes equinovarus is the most common deformity of the lower limb. The adequate treatment of clubfeet is still a challenge for orthopaedic surgeons and requires well-founded knowledge of pathoanatomy and established therapeutical options. This refresher, in addition to pathoanatomical fundamentals, provides an update on diagnostic and therapeutical facilities. By reviewing the results of conservative and surgical treatment concepts and their discussion it shall contribute to optimal individual management of congenital talipes equinovarus.

Adult cavovarus foot.

Cavovarus foot deformity, which often results from an imbalance of muscle forces, is commonly caused by hereditary motor sensory neuropathies. Other causes are cerebral palsy, cerebral injury (stroke), anterior horn cell disease (spinal root injury), talar neck injury, and residual clubfoot. In cavovarus foot deformity, the relatively strong peroneus longus and tibialis posterior muscles cause a hindfoot varus and forefoot valgus (pronated) position. Hindfoot varus causes overload of the lateral border of the foot, resulting in ankle instability, peroneal tendinitis, and stress fracture. Degen…

[Madura's foot (mycetoma)].

Mycetoma is a chronic disorder involving the skin, bones and soft tissues and is characterized by multiple discharge sinuses, nodules and swelling of the affected part. It may be caused by actinomycetes or eumycetes. It most commonly involves the foot but occasionally involve the hands, back or shoulders. We describe a 66-year-old male agricultural worker, hospitalized in Military Hospital of Craiova, for leg amputation caused by the disease evolution without response at treatment that was initiated 20 years ago.

Pediatric foot surgery.

Muscle balance involves increasing or decreasing the relative strength of a muscle. It also includes redirection of muscle tendons to change … tore the balance of muscle power. Osteotomy to change internal bone shape is effective in pediatric foot surgery since malshape of the osseous structures is a major problem. The osteotomy is becoming a more important part of surgical treatment as a better understanding and recognition of the biomechanics of the foot and leg develops. The arthroerisis p …
