Combining force and kinematic signals for human-computer interface: insights from cursor control by flexible pressure sensors.

Cursor control becomes difficult in space-constrained environments, such as operating portable computers while wearing pressurised gloves. Flexible pressure sensorscan capture fingertip kinematic (centre of pressure, CoP) and force signals within confined spaces, offering a potential control method. In two experiments, we evaluated mappings that transformed kinematic and/or force signals into cursor movements. A hybrid mapping usingCoP displacement and peak force to control cursor velocity achieved the highest throughput. Compared with a commercial TrackPoint, the hybrid mapping achieved 63% o

Estimation of the equivalent external force using a musculoskeletal model with muscle coactivation.

The present work introduces a novel method to determine the force vector that a subject must exert at the end of a limb in order to achieve the desired muscle force, taking into account muscle coactivation. The obtained force vector is referred to as the equivalent external force, as it represents the exerted force at the end-effector needed to provoke a desired muscle force. By using a musculoskeletal model of the lower limb and applying the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, a precise solution has been achieved to calculate the equivalent external force at the foot for the desired muscle force.

On optical forces in spherical whispering gallery mode resonators.

In this paper we discuss the force exerted by the field of an optical cavity on a polarizable dipole. We show that the modification of the cavity modes due to interaction with the dipole significantly alters the properties of the force. In particular, all components of the force are found to be non-conservative, and cannot, therefore, be derived from a potential energy. We also suggest a simple generalization of the standard formulas for the optical force on the dipole, which reproduces the results of calculations based on the Maxwell stress tensor.

Unraveling Interaction Mechanisms between Molybdenite and a Dodecane Oil Droplet Using Atomic Force Microscopy.

Molybdenite (MoS2) is a mineral that has drawn great interest because of its potential application in various fields. To facilitate the flotation of molybdenite, the mineral pulp is commonly treated with nonpolar oil additives to promote hydrophobicity and to form an oil bridge between ultrafine molybdenite particles for agglomeration. In this study, dodecane was chosen as a model oil to investigate the flotation mechanisms of molybdenite with nonpolar oil. The interaction forces between a micrometer-sized dodecane droplet and the molybdenite basal plane in various electrolyte solutions were d

Grip force release is impaired in parkinson's disease during a force tracking task.

The controlled release of grasping forces underlies skilled dexterous interactions with objects. While declines in force generation and maintenance are well documented in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD), limited data exist related to how PD impacts the motor control of grasping force release. The aim of this project was to determine how PD impacts grip force release relative to the generation and maintenance of force. It was hypothesized that PwPD would exhibit global deficits in force control relative to controls but would perform disproportionately worse during the controlled release

Differences in cardiodepressant effects of halothane and isoflurane after inotropic stimulation in guinea-pig papillary muscles.

The effects of halothane and isoflurane on action potentials and force of contraction were studied in guinea-pig isolated papillary muscles in order to investigate the cardiodepressant action of the anesthetics in the presence of clinically relevant inotropic drugs. In control conditions, equipotent concentrations of the two volatile anesthetics depressed force of contraction to a similar degree. Halothane (2%) slightly shortened the action potential duration, whereas isoflurane (2.8%) did not influence the shape of the action potential. The muscles were then treated with three different inotr

A portable and sensitive DNA-based electrochemical sensor for detecting piconewton-scale cellular forces.

BACKGROUND: Cell-generated forces are a key player in cell biology, especially during cellular shape formation, migration, cancer development, and immune response. The measurement of forces exerted and experienced by cells is fundamental in understanding these mechanosensitive cellular behaviors. While cell-generated forces can now be detected based on techniques like fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical/magnetic tweezers, however, most of these approaches rely on complicated instruments or materials, as well as skilled operators, which could limit their potential broad ap

Investigation on drug entrapment location in liposomes and transfersomes based on molecular dynamics simulation.

In this study, liposome and transfersome were successfully constructed using molecular dynamics simulation. Three drugs with different polarity, including 5-fluorouracil, ligustrazine, and osthole, were selected as model drugs to study the distribution of drugs in lipid vesicles by calculating the radial distribution function and the potential of mean force. The solubility parameters between drugs and different regions in lipid vesicles were calculated to characterize the compatibility of drugs in different regions in lipid vesicles, which provided the basis for the conclusion of this paper. A Case Study With Symbihand: An sEMG-Controlled Electrohydraulic Hand Orthosis for Individuals With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

With recent improvements in healthcare, individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) have prolonged life expectancy, and it is therefore vital to preserve their independence. Hand function plays a central role in maintaining independence in daily living. This requires sufficient grip force and the ability to modulate it with no substantially added effort. Individuals with DMD have low residual grip force and its modulation is challenging and fatiguing. To assist their hand function, we developed a novel dynamic hand orthosis called SymbiHand, where the user's hand motor intention is deco

Correlation of bite force with excitation-contraction coupling time of the masseter in myasthenia gravis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between the impairment of excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling of masseter and the bite force in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). METHODS: In 20 patients with MG, masseteric compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and mandibular movement-related potentials (MRP) were recorded simultaneously after stimulating the trigeminal motor nerve with a needle electrode. The E-C coupling time (ECCT) was calculated by the latency difference between CMAP and MRP. Bite force was measured using a pressure-sensitive sheet. Serial assessm

Carnosic acid is an efflux pumps modulator by dissipation of the membrane potential in Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus.

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has become a serious problem of public health. Along with the controlled permeability by the cell-wall, active efflux systems can provide resistance by extruding antibiotics. Carnosic acid is capable to potentiate the antimicrobial activity of several antibiotics. However, the underlying molecular mechanism governing this effect remains unclear. The present study aims to investigate the effect of carnosic acid on the transport of ethidium bromide, on the permeability or the membrane potential in Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. By using fluor

Corticospinal excitability scales with global arm cycling intensity but not instantaneous force.

Corticospinal excitability (CSE) is modulated during arm cycling, but its relationship with force production remains unclear. This study examined (1) how force output changes across arm cycling workloads and (2) whether CSE scales with force during rhythmic movement. Eleven healthy adults performed bilateral arm cycling at 25, 50, and 100 W at 60 rpm. Vector force was measured continuously across crank positions using instrumented handles. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited with transcranial magnetic stimulation and cervicomedullary motor evoked potentials (CMEPs) elicited with transmasto

Talus Fracture - a Pathomechanical Study Using Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The talus is a peculiar bone in the human body that plays a key role in load transfer due to its unique shape and characteristics. Fractures involve challenging treatment and potential complications. We aimed to simulate the talus using real-world data and analyze its biomechanical responses to potential forces that might cause its fracture. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrieved a three-dimensional (3D) file of the intact talus, submitted it to a 3D finite element analysis (FEA) using software (ANSYS Mechanical V2023R2), and then set the elastic modulus or Young's modulus values of t

Acute effects of squat loading intensity on performance in competitive judo athletes.

Post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is used to acutely improve sport-specific performance, yet the optimal loading strategy for complex combat sports remains unclear. This randomized, counterbalanced crossover study investigated the acute effects of moderate- and maximal-load squat conditioning activities on judo-specific fitness among nationally competitive male judokas. All participants completed three sessions on separate days (≥ 48 h apart): a control condition consisting of a standardized judo-specific warm-up only, an 80%-PAPE protocol (warm-up + 6 squats at 80% of 6RM), and a

Research of masticatory function using hemiplegia simulator equipment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hemiplegic patients often exhibit a characteristic condition called Wernicke-Mann contracture. Therefore, the occlusal pattern in hemiplegic patients is considered to be adapted to stress because of this characteristic limb position. We created a sham Wernicke-Mann contracture in healthy individuals using hemiplegia simulator equipment and compared the functional occlusion in this position with that in the normal state to evaluate dynamic adaptive responses. METHODS: Wernicke-Mann contracture was simulated using a device to create sham hemiplegia (Manabi-tai, Hemiple

Enhancing spinal bone anchor pull-out resistance with an L-shaped anchor.

The success rate of spinal fusion surgery is mainly determined by the fixation strength of the spinal bone anchors. This study explores the use of an L-shaped spinal bone anchor that is intended to establish a macro-shape lock with the posterior cortical layer of the vertebral body, thereby increasing the pull-out resistance of the anchor. The performance of this L-shaped anchor was evaluated in lumbar vertebra phantoms (L1-L5) across four distinct perpendicular orientations (lateral, medial, superior, and inferior). During the pull-out experiments, the pull-out force, and the displacement of

Combined fragment-based machine learning force field with classical force field and its application in the NMR calculations of macromolecules in solutions.

We have developed a combined fragment-based machine learning (ML) force field and molecular mechanics (MM) force field for simulating the structures of macromolecules in solutions, and then compute its NMR chemical shifts with the generalized energy-based fragmentation (GEBF) approach at the level of density functional theory (DFT). In this work, we first construct Gaussian approximation potential based on GEBF subsystems of macromolecules for MD simulations and then a GEBF-based neural network (GEBF-NN) with deep potential model for the studied macromolecule. Then, we develop a GEBF-NN/MM for

A Multipole-Based Reactive Force Field for Hydrocarbons.

The computational complexity of quantum chemistry methods has prompted the development of reactive force fields, facilitating practical applications of molecular dynamics simulations for large-scale reactive systems. Current reactive force fields typically employ intricate corrections based on prior chemical knowledge, which severely impedes their further advancement. This study presents a new atomic multipole-based reactive model with bond free (OPERATOR). The force field is constructed on a simple, physically motivated model within the AMOEBA framework that closely resembles the physical rep

Predicting functional force production capabilities of upper extremity functional electrical stimulation neuroprostheses: a proof of concept study.

OBJECTIVE: This study's goal was to demonstrate person-specific predictions of the force production capabilities of a paralyzed arm when actuated with a functional electrical stimulation (FES) neuroprosthesis. These predictions allow us to determine, for each hand position in a person's workspace, if FES activated muscles can produce enough force to hold the arm against gravity and other passive forces, the amount of force the arm can potentially exert on external objects, and in which directions FES can move the arm. APPROACH: We computed force production predictions for a person with high t
