[Intracardiac migration of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. A systematic literature review and case report].

UNLABELLED: CSF shunting procedures are common in neurosurgery. A rare complication of these procedures is migration of distal catheter. We present a case of peritoneal catheter migration into the right heart chambers. A systematic review of appropriate literature data was carried out. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a patient with communicating hydrocephalus after previous penetrating traumatic brain injury. Migration of peritoneal catheter into the right heart chambers occurred in 5 days after ventriculoperitoneal shunting. We performed a systematic review of literature data and analyzed a

Intrauterine Device Migrated into the Urachus: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device is the most commonly used female contraceptive device, but the related complications of intrauterine devices are also common. Sometimes, intrauterine devices can cause uterine perforation, migrating into the abdominal cavity or other organs. At the same time, the intrauterine device may break into several small segments, migrate to distant organs, and even cause misdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the role of laparoscopy in treating intrauterine device migration. DESIGN: This was a retrospective study involving in a review of a single case. SETTI

FOREIGN BODIES IN THE URINARY BLADDER - CASE SERIES.

UNLABELLED: Foreign bodies get into the bladder by self insertion, migration or as a component of iatrogenic and penetrating injuries. Diagnosis and treatment pose great challenges to the urologist especially if they are radiolucent. A common pattern of presentation is with lower urinary tract symptoms. High index of suspicion is required in patient with lower urinary symptoms. We hereby report 5 cases of foreign bodies in the urinary bladder, 2 (40%) self inflicted, 2(40%) iatrogenic and 1(20%) due to migration of the object; as well as their successful management. CONCLUSION: Foreign bodies

Migration of ingested sewing needle from within sigmoid colon to outside of the lumen.

Foreign body ingestion is a frequently observed condition in children. However, migration of an ingested foreign body from the gastrointestinal tract toward any abdominal organ is extremely rare. We report herein a case of a 2-year-old female patient in whom an ingested sewing needle was palpable by rectal examination and was determined to have migrated from within the sigmoid colon to outside of the lumen. The needle was surgically removed. In cases of foreign body ingestion, both physical examination and radiological follow-up should be performed.

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous retrieval of an ischiorectal impacted ingested fish bone after failed surgical exploration: A case report and review of the literature.

Most ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously through the gastrointestinal tract without incident. Sharp objects, such as fish or chicken bones, rarely perforate the bowel and migrate into adjacent soft tissues. A 36-year-old man presented with a 4-day history of worsening left perianal and buttock pain that began during defecation. Computed tomography revealed a linear foreign body in the left ischiorectal fossa. An initial ultrasound-guided retrieval attempt failed because the foreign body could not be confidently visualized on the scan. Subsequent anorectal examination under anesthesia an

Silicone synovitis: clinical, radiologic, and histologic features.

We have described a patient in whom an erosive arthropathy of the right wrist developed three years after insertion of a silicone lunate prosthesis. The clinical picture of silicone synovitis is being recognized more frequently after bone and joint implants, but the diagnosis may be delayed because initial suspicions focus on infection or crystal-induced arthropathy rather than foreign body reaction.

Two remarkable events in the field of intraocular foreign body: (1) The reversal of siderosis bulbi. (2) The spontaneous extrusion of an intraocular copper foreign body.

Two unusual events concerning intraocular foreign bodies are presented. The first patient had an occult or unsuspected intraocular foreign body. He showed iridoplegia with mydriasis, siderosis iridis, and an intraocular piece of iron lying posteriorly near the retina. The foreign body was removed and the patient regained normal iris color and pupillary activity. His vision remains 20/15 six years postoperatively dispite ensuing retinal detachment one year after removal of the foreign body. The second patient was a young boy injured by a blasting cap explosion. He lost one eye from the injury a

Unusual foreign body of pancreas: surgical management.

CONTEXT: The foreign ingestion is common occurrence but migration to pancreas is rare entity. Most of foreign bodies pass spontaneously through the anus but about 1% can perforate the wall of stomach or duodenum to reach solid organ. Pancreatic foreign body can results in fatal complication. Pancreatic foreign body can be removed endoscopically or surgically. CASE REPORT: We are reporting a case of successful removal of pancreatic foreign body (sewing needle) by surgery. CONCLUSION: Pancreatic foreign body is a uncommon entity and surgical removal is warranted in majority of cases.

The intravenous foreign body: a report of 2 cases.

Two cases of metallic foreign body injury to the upper limb are described. In both cases the foreign body was clearly visible on x-rays, considered to be lodged in the soft tissues, but migrated to one of the large subcutaneous veins. One subsequently migrated to the heart; the other was removed from the peripheral vein.

Foreign Glass Bodies in Pleura and Pancreas: Systematic Review for Entry Hypotheses and Treatment Options in an Unresolved Case.

BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies within the pleura and pancreas are infrequent, and the approaches to their treatment still a subject of debate. There is limited knowledge particularly regarding glass foreign bodies. METHODS: We present a case involving large glass splinters in the pleura and pancreas, with an unknown entry point. In addition, a systematic review was conducted to explore entry hypotheses and management options. RESULTS: In addition to our case, our review uncovered eight incidents of intrapleural glass, and another eight cases of glass in other intrathoracic areas. The fragments e

Forgotten guidewire presenting as femoral vein extrusion: A rare complication of central venous access.

Central venous catheterisation (CVC) is a commonly performed procedure for critically ill patients in emergency departments (EDs). Here, we present the case of a rare complication of CVC involving a retained guidewire that was forgotten in the patient's vascular system and spontaneously extruded through the femoral vein 1.5 years later, prompting the patient to seek ED care.

Cochlear Implant Electrode Migration due to Cholesterol Granuloma: Cues from a Case.

This paper aims to describe a rare case of cochlear implant (CI) failure due to electrode array migration and review the literature on the topic. A 72-year-old woman complained of retroauricolar pain two years after receiving a left CI, with deterioration of the auditory skills and an increased impedance of electrodes. Temporal bone computed tomographic scans revealed a soft density tissue involving the left mastoid and the middle ear. It also revealed a lateral displacement of the array into the middle ear. Surgery with CI re-implantation was performed. The specimen examination disclosed the

Sudden near-fatal tracheal aspiration of an undiagnosed nasal foreign body in a small child.

Foreign body aspiration is a commonly encountered emergency in children. Foreign body can lodge in any site from supra-glottis to the terminal bronchioles. Symptoms might range from none to respiratory compromise, cardiac arrest and even death depending on location and size. We report successful management of a child who aspirated a nasal foreign body during physical examination in an outpatient department causing complete airway obstruction with special mention about different management options available for managing near total respiratory arrest from an aspirated foreign body in the ED.

Correct diagnosis and successful treatment for pericardial effusion due to toothpick injury: a case report and literature review.

We reported a 55-year-old man who suffered from chest pain and dyspnea on exertion for two weeks associated with night sweating, general malaise, poor appetite, and body weight loss. Physical examination revealed friction rub with distant heart sound, bilateral clear breathing sound, no abdomen tenderness, and normal bowel sound. Subsequent chest X-ray revealed cardiomegaly and cardiac echo showed massive pericardial and pleural effusion with normal left ventricular function. Constrictive pericarditis was diagnosed based on clinical information. Tuberculosis (TB), malignancy, autoimmune diseas

Unusual migratory foreign body in the neck.

Reports of ingested foreign bodies penetrating the pharynx and migrating through the neck are rare, and mostly involved fish bones. We describe a 44-year-old man who was involved in a motor vehicle accident and accidentally swallowed his tooth. The swallowed tooth penetrated the pharynx and became lodged adjacent to his right thyroid gland. It was successfully removed via neck exploration and the patient recovered well.

Phthisis bulbi with a large protruding foreign body--a rare complication of penetrating injuries.

Spontaneous extrusion of a retained intraocular foreign body is a rare occurrence. An unusual case is described in a 30-year-old male, where a foreign body remained in the eye for four years and then, as phthisis set in, the foreign body gradually extruded, causing constant irritation of the upper lid. Such a situation has not been documented before. Its management along with the histopathologic features are discussed in the light of the available literature.

Multiple magnet ingestion and gastrointestinal morbidity.

Foreign body ingestion is common but multiple magnet ingestion is rare. When more than one magnet is ingested, gastrointestinal complications may occur. The magnets are attracted to each other across the bowel wall and this may lead to pressure necrosis, perforation, fistula formation, or intestinal obstruction. We report a case of perforation following the ingestion of 12 small magnets. Clinicians who care for children should be aware of this hazard.
