Sarcoidosis and sarcoidal foreign body reaction after permanent eye makeup application: Analysis by immunohistochemistry with commercially available antibodies specific to Cutibacterium acnes and Mycobacteria.

We report two cases of eyebrow granulomas in patients who underwent a permanent eye makeup procedure. A rash was observed 16 months after the procedure in Case 1, and 10 years after the procedure in Case 2. Histopathologically, both patients exhibited noncaseating epithelioid cell granulomas. In Case 1, most of the black-brown granules of the permanent makeup were not present in the granulomas but were localized in the upper dermis. In contrast, in Case 2, some of the black-brown granules were phagocytized in the granulomas, preferentially within the giant cells. Based on systemic examinations

Millimeter-thick xenoislet-laden fibers as retrievable transplants mitigate foreign body reactions for long-term glycemic control in diabetic mice.

Transplantation technologies of pancreatic islets as well as stem cell-derived pancreatic beta cells encapsulated in hydrogel for the induction of immunoprotection could advance to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus, if the hydrogel transplants acquire retrievability through mitigating foreign body reactions after transplantation. Here, we demonstrate that the diameter of the fiber-shaped hydrogel transplants determines both in vivo cellular deposition onto themselves and their retrievability. Specifically, we found that the in vivo cellular deposition is significantly mitigated when the diameter

Histologic features of foreign body reactions in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1. The Military Medical Consortium for Applied Retroviral Research.

BACKGROUND: Within a large population of patients seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), seven had biopsy specimens that showed foreign body reactions with histologic features different from those seen in non-HIV-1-positive patients. OBJECTIVE: These cases were reviewed to determine whether there was a specific pattern of response to foreign bodies in HIV-1 infection and whether this pattern was related to the stage of disease. METHODS: Biopsy specimens were reviewed to identify ruptured epidermal cysts. These were studied in routine hematoxylin-and-eosin-stained secti

In Vivo Comparison of Synthetic Macroporous Filamentous and Sponge-like Skin Substitute Matrices Reveals Morphometric Features of the Foreign Body Reaction According to 3D Biomaterial Designs.

Synthetic macroporous biomaterials are widely used in the field of skin tissue engineering to mimic membrane functions of the native dermis. Biomaterial designs can be subclassified with respect to their shape in fibrous designs, namely fibers, meshes or fleeces, respectively, and porous designs, such as sponges and foams. However, synthetic matrices often have limitations regarding unfavorable foreign body responses (FBRs). Severe FBRs can result in unfavorable disintegration and rejection of an implant, whereas mild FBRs can lead to an acceptable integration of a biomaterial. In this context

Editorial Commentary: A Biphasic (Calcified and Demineralized), Cancellous, Interpositional Allograft Augmenting Rotator Cuff Repair in an Ovine Model Does Not Show Harmful Inflammation or Foreign Body Reaction.

To improve the outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff (RC) repair, it is important to achieve tendon-to-bone healing at the repair site. Healed repairs are more likely to restore shoulder strength and lead to higher magnitudes of satisfaction. Patches or grafts that can be either secured to the bursal surface of the RC or interposed between the RC tendon and greater tuberosity at the time of repair have been described as adjuncts to RC repair. A cancellous, biphasic allograft tissue composed of 2 layers (calcified to promote osseointegration and demineralized to support soft-tissue ingrowth) ha

Massive foreign body reaction and osteolysis following primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with the ligament augmentation and reconstruction system (LARS): a case report with histopathological and physicochemical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Autologous hamstrings and patellar tendon have historically been considered the gold standard grafts for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). In the last decades, the utilization of synthetic grafts has re-emerged due to advantageous lack of donor site morbidity and more rapid return to sport. The Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction System (LARS) has demonstrated to be a valid and safe option for ACLR in the short term. However, recent studies have pointed out the notable frequency of associated complications, including synovitis, mechanical failure, and even chon

Histopathological Insights into Peri-Implant Mucosal Inflammation: Comparative Analysis of Peri-Implant Mucositis and Peri-Implantitis as Distinct Disease Entities with Emphasis on Foreign Body Reactions.

Peri-implant diseases, including peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, constitute significant human health challenges that threaten implant longevity despite advances in implant medicine. These inflammatory disease entities compromise peri-implant tissue integrity and oral wellbeing, with growing public health relevance due to the widespread use of dental implants. Increasing evidence implicates tribocorrosion-induced titanium particle release in provoking foreign body-mediated inflammation, facilitating disease progression from a reversible inflammatory illness to an irreversible destr

Are glycoconjugates and their endogenous receptors involved in the fusion of mononuclear macrophages resulting in multinucleate giant cells? Histochemical and electron microscopic determination of endogenous sugar-binding proteins (lectins) in mononuclear macrophages and multinucleate giant cells appearing in granulomatous foreign body reaction.

Protein-carbohydrate recognition has been found to play an important role in phagocytosis. Labelled (neo)glycoproteins were employed to comparatively analyze the histochemical pattern and ultrastructural localization of endogenous carbohydrate-binding proteins (lectins) of mononuclear macrophages and multinucleate giant cells involved in the granulomatous foreign body reaction. Sugar receptors having an affinity to simple alpha- and beta-galactoside-structures, to alpha-mannose residues, to N-acetylglucosamine, to N-acetylgalactosamine and to glucuronic acid, respectively, were detected in bot

Immune response to foreign materials in spinal fusion surgery.

Spinal fusion surgery is a common procedure used to stabilize the spine and treat back pain. The procedure involves the use of foreign materials such as screws, rods, or cages, which can trigger a foreign body reaction, an immune response that involves the activation of immune cells such as macrophages and lymphocytes. The foreign body reaction can impact the success of spinal fusion, as it can interfere with bone growth and fusion. This review article provides an overview of the cellular and molecular events in the foreign body reaction, the impact of the immune response on spinal fusion, and

[Foreign body synovitis--a limiting factor in use of the Trevira ligament in cruciate ligament surgery?].

In a prospective clinical study on 32 patients with Trevira ligament implants arthroscopic and histological findings were used to assess the articular effects of the synthetic ligament. In group 1 of patients with intact Trevira ligament no changes associated with foreign-body reactions were seen. In group 2 with abrased or frayed synthetic ligaments generalised foreign-body reactions in the suprapatellar recess as well as perivascular, round-cell infiltrates were seen in four out of six patients; four of the six cases also showed fibrotic signs indicative of prearthrotic changes. In group 3 w…

Delayed orbital floor implant complications: Case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: Foreign body reaction to non-absorbable alloplastic orbital implants utilized for bony reconstruction are infrequently documented in the literature. We present the workup and surgical management of a giant cystic mass encapsulating a patient's alloplastic orbital implant, which was ultimately deemed to be a result of foreign body reaction. OBSERVATIONS: A 41-year-old male patient with distant history of a right orbital floor fracture had undergone repair with the placement of a nylon foil implant. The patient presented twenty years later with progressive ipsilateral globe proptosis a

Immediate local tissue reactions to Teflon vocal cord implants.

From the beginning of the teflon injection technique for paralyzed vocal cords there has been an obvious interest in its role as a foreign body. There are a number of previous reports after varying periods of time of residence. This case report describes the tissues response of the foreign body reaction very early, 48 hours after the injection of teflon. It is consistent with early inflammatory foreign body reaction.

Chronic Ulceration and Sinus Formation due to Foreign Body: An Often-Forgotten Problem.

Foreign bodies like residues of suture or mesh may lead to a foreign body reaction, cavity formation and continuous secretion and perhaps ulceration. We present a more than 9 years long medical record of a 49 year old man after a simple surgical procedure. The background was a sinus formation generated from a foreign body reaction. The case report shows that this condition is often overlooked and even using advanced equipment, it is difficult to diagnose. The only solution is to diagnose and remove the triggering cause. Fistulography and ultrasound scanning seem to be the optimal diagnostic to

Sponge Rubber Revealed Two Years After Penetrating Injury: A Case Report.

The present report illustrates a very rare case report of a foreign body granuloma of the foot associated with a 2-year period of a retained spongeous rubber foreign body after a penetrating injury. Because it appeared almost 2 years after the injury, the history of trauma was minimized, the foreign body had migrated from the plantar to the dorsal side of the foot, and the radiographic appearance resembled a malignant process, it was difficult to rule out the possibility of a malignant tumor. This case shows the weakness of magnetic resonance imaging in detecting spongeous rubber in the body.
