A 70-year-old woman with osteoporosis fell at home and presented to our emergency department with intense left hip pain. Radiographs revealed a left iliopubic rami fracture and nondisplaced right ischiopubic rami fracture. She was discharged after a 24-hour observation with no clinical changes. Seventy-two hours later, she was readmitted with a painful abdominal mass, progressive oliguria, tachycardia, hypotension, and profuse perspiration with generalized pallor. On physical examination, a painful mass in the hypogastrium and intense inflammation in the thigh and the proximal portion of left

Bilateral simultaneous avulsion fractures of the anterior tibial tubercle (ATT) are extremely rare. Since the first description in 1954, 15 similar cases have been reported. We report a further case in a 16-year-old boy who sustained simultaneous bilateral tibial tubercle avulsion fractures (Watson-Jones Type III) from jumping during a gymnastics session. The right knee presented an associated partial avulsion of the patellar tendon. Both knees were treated successfully by open reduction and internal fixation with two cannulated screws. The recovery of the patient was complete; the screws were

Avulsion fractures of the anterior superior iliac spine are rare. This injury is usually seen in adolescents, as an avulsion fracture of the apophyses, a result of sudden vigorous contraction or repetitive contraction of the sartorius and tensor fasciae latae muscles. Treatment for this injury is usually conservative; however, surgical management has been reported in those with significant displacement. We present a 14 year old male patient who was referred to our unit for biopsy of a possible pathological fracture of his right ilium. The authors feel it is essential to understand the importan

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) plays a major role in knee stabilization, and clinical studies have shown an increase in incidence of its injury. Due to the surrounding neurovascular elements in the popliteal space, open approaches to repair such injury are difficult to perform. The "safe postero-medial approach" to PCL avulsion fracture is a simple approach, does not require exploration of the neurovascular elements, and produced satisfactory results in the majority of patients.

We report a case of hamulus (hook of hamate) fracture nonunion and secondary flexor digitorum profundus tendon rupture caused by repetitive wrist hyperextension sustained during clay shotgun shooting. The hyperextension caused avulsion of the hamulus by the pisohamate ligament. The hamulus was excised and a flexor digitorum profundus tendon transfer of the ring to small finger side to side was performed with satisfactory outcome.

BACKGROUND: Avulsion fractures of the posterior cruciate ligament have long been regarded as rare injuries. In the past, it was common practice to use cast immobilization as an external adjunct after open reduction and internal fixation of fractures.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with displaced avulsion fractures of the posterior cruciate ligament were treated with open reduction and internal fixation between August 1989 and July 1993. Malleolar screws were chosen as fixation devices in 14 patients. In the other two, pull-through sutures were used because the size of the fractured fragments was t

An avulsion fracture of tibial tuberosity with an unusual articular involvement was treated with open reduction and internal fixation. Although the mechanism of tibial tuberosity fracture is described as passively flexing the knee while active quadriceps femoris contraction, the weight transmitted from the menisci on the lateral side of the knee joint may cause an epiphyseal disruption. We report a case of tibial tuberosity fracture with lateral plateau rim fracture in a young male adolescent, which has not been published previously in the literature.

Overuse injuries are a common occurrence with distance runners, yet injuries to the iliac crest are rare in this population. When an iliac crest injury occurs, it is usually associated with the weak unossified growth plate. The condition may present itself as apophysitis and may progress to an avulsion fracture. This is a report of a rare case in which a collegiate distance runner had an avulsion fracture of his anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). Treatment consisted of rest followed by nonweight-bearing graded exercise performed in the pool and on a Schwinn Airdyne. The graded exercise not

Isolated avulsion fractures of the lesser tuberosity of the humerus are exceptionally rare. Two cases are reported here, each involving a 12-year-old boy. The mechanism of injury appears to be a strong external rotatory force applied while the arm is at maximum external rotation and approximately 60 degrees of abduction. In children and adolescents the fracture most likely occurs through the apophyseal plate of the lesser tuberosity (traction epiphysis). In adults, clinical differentiation from the far more common calcific peritendinitis of the rotator cuff can be difficult. Whereas large, dis

BACKGROUND: Posterior cruciate ligament tibial avulsion fracture (PCLAF) is relatively rare. This fracture may be accompanied by soft tissue injuries, most commonly involving the medial collateral ligament (MCL). The present study aimed to determine the rate of MCL injury and its association with fracture characteristics in patients with PCLAF.
METHODS: Patients with PCLAF were identified with computed tomography, and associated ligamentous and meniscal injuries were evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging. Fracture morphology was assessed via heat maps and quantitative measurements. Receiv

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2025eng
The tibial apophysis is a separate center of ossification in the proximal tibia of skeletally immature dogs. Because it is made of cartilage during development, it is prone to fractures (avulsions) and other tensile-related injuries. One prior veterinary study proposed a classification system for proximal tibial apophyseal fractures, but this study did not include fractures that involved the proximal tibial physis or metaphysis, which have been described in human classification systems. The objectives of the study reported here were (1) to characterize and establish a radiographic grading syst

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2021eng
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes for arthroscopic treatment for acute posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fractures with a suspensory technique.
METHODS: A total of 30 acute (<3 weeks) isolated PCL tibial avulsion fractures were fixed under arthroscopy using the Endobutton device. After arthroscopic exploration and reduction of the bony fragment, a single tibia tunnel was established; then, the titanium button was guided through the tunnel and flipped onto the bony fragment to stabilize the fracture. Finally, an interference screw was squeezed into the tunnel

BACKGROUND: The tension-band technique, with Kirschner wires or cannulated screws, is one of the most commonly used fixation techniques for patellar fractures. However, it may be not useful for inferior patellar pole fractures as it may lead to fragment reduction loss and fixation failure. We present a surgical technique that combines a miniplate with tension band wiring for inferior patellar pole avulsion fractures and report surgical outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between June 2012 and May 2016, 17 consecutive patients (mean age: 51 years) with inferior patellar pole fractures (AO/OTA 34-A

Combined simultaneous radial wrist extensor injuries, namely ipsilateral extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) and brevis (ECRB) avulsion fractures, are rare. While non-operative management with cast immobilization has been described, most recommend operative intervention in the acute setting. Surgical repair of chronic injuries, however, has received little attention in the literature. This case describes a 50-year-old male who sustained combined ipsilateral ECRL and ECRB avulsion fractures from the bases of the index and middle metacarpals. Five months after the initial trauma, he underwent

BACKGROUND: An acute ankle sprain can result in a bony avulsion of the lateral ankle ligaments. The extent of concomitant lesions and subsequent instability patterns are not clearly understood. The high incidence of old avulsion fractures found in symptomatic chronic ankle instability may indicate the need for primary fixation.
METHODS: Ten patients (5 male, 5 female; mean age, 34 years; range, 15-64 years) with bony avulsion fractures of the fibula after acute ankle sprains were included. All patients were treated after a mean of 7.7 days (range, 2-17 days) with screw fixation of the fragmen

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Avulsion fractures of the intercondylar eminence (ICE) of the tibia have become increasingly frequent in older school age. Due to recent advances in arthroscopic techniques, it is now possible to treat them by minimally invasive methods. This retrospective study presents evaluation of clinical outcomes of an arthroscopic technique using crossed K-wires.
MATERIAL: Thirty-five patients with ICE avulsion fracture, 17 girls and 18 boys at an average age of 13 years (7-18), were included in this study. All were indicated for surgical treatment on the basis of radiographic evi

BACKGROUND: The attachment of the posterior cruciate ligament to the posterior intercondylar fossa of the tibia is in a location that is difficult to access for arthroscopic surgical procedures. This report presents a variety of arthroscopically assisted reduction and fixation methods for managing avulsion fractures of the posterior cruciate ligament from the tibia.
METHODS: Thirteen patients (fourteen knees) who had an avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligament were treated with an arthroscopic procedure. Eleven patients underwent the operation in the acute phase (four to ten days
