Radiologic case study. Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee reclassified as insufficiency fracture.

Three questions need to be answered. First, does spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee in fact exist? The answer is "probably," but much more rarely than initially believed. In five of the authors' most recent MRIs in patients with clinically diagnosed or radiographically suggested spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee, only one patient's images fulfilled the criteria for spontaneous osteonecrosis (Figure 3). Three of the five had subchondral changes of either insufficiency fractures or true fractures, while one patient had equivocal findings. Second, will the actual diagnosis influence the tr

[Spontaneous healing of a juvenile bone cyst of the tibia after pathological fracture].

Up to the present only few cases of spontaneous healing of juvenile bone cysts after pathological fractures were published. Most authors will not accept the possibility of a "healing fracture" in bone cysts because of missing documentation. In our clinic we could observe spontaneous healing of a juvenile bone cyst of the tibia after a pathological fracture in a ten-year old boy. Therefore healing of bone cysts after fracture is proven. On the other hand healing of bone cysts following conservative treatment after a fracture is not sure. Conservative treatment depends on the localization and ty

Spontaneous fracture and embolization of a central venous catheter: prevention and early detection.

Central venous catheters are used increasingly in oncology patients. Spontaneous fracture and embolization of a catheter is a rare complication. This report illustrates such a case, in which the fragment was retrieved percutaneously. Impending line fracture may be detected by the 'pinch-off sign' on a chest radiograph. Prevention may be possible by inserting the catheter more laterally.

Spontaneous partial fracture of the catheter of a totally implantable subcutaneous infusion port.

A totally implantable subcutaneous infusion port was inserted via the left subclavian vein with peel-away sheath in a 45-year-old male patient receiving home parenteral nutrition. Sixteen months after implantation, the patient noted pain in his left clavicular region during home infusion. This was found to be due to the leakage of infusion fluid resulting from partial fracture of the catheter at the level where the catheter passed between the clavicle and first rib. Because the fracture was partial, the catheter did not embolize to the heart or large vessels. Although subcutaneous infusion por

Strontium ranelate decreases the incidence of new caudal vertebral fractures in a growing mouse model with spontaneous fractures by improving bone microarchitecture.

UNLABELLED: Young mice over-expressing Runx2 fail to gain bone relative to wild type mice with growth and present spontaneous fractures. It allows, for the first time in rodents, direct assessment of anti-fracture efficacy of strontium ranelate which was able to decrease caudal vertebrae fracture incidence through an improvement of trabecular and cortical architecture. INTRODUCTION: The aim was to investigate whether strontium ranelate was able to decrease fracture incidence in mice over-expressing Runx2, model of severe developmental osteopenia associated with spontaneous vertebral fractures

Spontaneous defect remodeling in a distal humerus fracture with extensive osseous loss: a case report of a complex elbow fracture.

Sideswipe injuries to the elbow cause complex fracture patterns and remain difficult management problems. The authors report a case of spontaneous bone remodeling of an extensive metaphyseal defect zone.

Subchondral insufficiency fractures, subchondral insufficiency fractures with osteonecrosis, and other apparently spontaneous subchondral bone lesions of the knee-pathogenesis and diagnosis at imaging.

Subchondral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) and SIFs with osteonecrosis (SIF-ONs) of the knee (previously misnamed spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK)) are bone lesions that appear without prior traumatic, tumoral, or inflammatory event. Both conditions are characterized in the early stages by epiphyseal bone marrow edema (BME)-like signal at MRI. However, while SIFs usually heal spontaneously, they can also evolve to osteonecrosis (i.e., SIF-ON), which may progress to an irreversible collapse of the articular surface. Careful analysis of other MRI signs may help differentiate the two c

Farm management and husbandry practices associated with spontaneous humeral fractures in New Zealand dairy heifers.

AIMS: To use a farm-based survey to identify characteristics of the New Zealand dairy system associated with the risk of spontaneous humeral fracture in dairy heifers. METHODS: A questionnaire was designed and made available in print and online to collect information from dairy farmers and/or veterinarians, across New Zealand, about the management and nutrition of cows from birth to first lactation. Data were collected from July 2019 to March 2020 from farms that either had recorded (case farms) or not recorded (control farms) cases of humeral fractures in dairy heifers. RESULTS: A total of

Spontaneous Intrauterine Depressed Skull Fractures: Report of 2 Cases Requiring Neurosurgical Intervention and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intrauterine depressed skull fractures (IDSFs) are rare fractures that often require neurosurgical evaluation and therapy. Most of the reported congenital depressions are secondary to maternal abdominal trauma or instrumentation during delivery. Spontaneous IDSFs occur in the setting of uneventful normal spontaneous vaginal delivery or cesarean section, without obvious predisposing risk factors. The etiology and optimal management of spontaneous IDSFs remain controversial. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe 2 cases of spontaneous IDSF who underwent cranioplasty at our insti

Spontaneous non-traumatic stress fractures in bilateral femoral shafts in a patient treated with bisphosphonates.

Bisphosphonates are potent inhibitors of bone resorption and widely used to treat osteoporosis. Extensive studies have shown that therapy with bisphosphonates improves bone density and decreases fracture risk. However, concerns have been raised about potential over-suppression of bone turnover during long-term use of bisphosphonates, resulting in increased susceptibility to and delayed healing of non-spinal fractures. We report a patient who sustained non-traumatic stress fractures in bilateral femoral shafts with delayed healing after long-term bisphosphonate therapy. She underwent open reduc

Osteoporosis is the cause of spontaneous humeral fracture in dairy cows from New Zealand.

Outbreaks of humeral fractures in dairy cows have been reported in New Zealand for several years. Gross, histologic, and histomorphometric findings in the humerus from primiparous cows with spontaneous humeral fracture were compared to age-matched control cows. Affected cows had a complete nonarticular spiral fracture of the humerus. Histologically affected humeri had a thicker growth plate with abnormal architecture, thinner cortex with increased abnormal resorption, increased resorption in the distal humerus, decreased trabecular density, abnormal trabecular architecture, presence of growth

Spontaneous bilateral coronoid process fracture of the mandible after BSSO: A case report.

A patient with spontaneous bilateral fracture of the mandibular coronoid process is presented. The definite cause is unknown, but possible contributing factors include osteoporosis, bruxism and changed kinetics of the temporalis muscle after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) resulting in an avulsion fracture. The patient was treated surgically with bilateral coronoidectomy.

"Noodle-like" deformity and spontaneous fracture of the lower limbs in uremia-a case report.

Renal osteopathy is common in patients with end-stage renal disease. For certain patients, treatment opportunities are lost due to extremely superstition and poor compliance. This article reports a rare case in which the patient developed "noodle-like" deformity of the bilateral lower limbs and spontaneous fracture of bilateral distal end of femur. The purpose of this article is to offer a warning to future patients.
