Incidental Detection of Ossifying Fibroma of the Frontal Sinus on 99mTc-MDP Bone Scan.

Sinonasal ossifying fibroma is rare and frequently occurs in young adulthood with a female predominance. We present a case of a 48-year-old man with a history of newly diagnosed lung cancer, referred for whole-body bone scan for evaluation of metastatic disease, which showed 2 focal intense areas of tracer uptake in the frontal sinus region without other abnormalities. SPECT/CT revealed the activities were located in the frontal sinus, associated with scattered calcifications and well-defined margins. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was ossifying fibroma.

Technical strategies for en bloc resection and immediate reconstruction in hemangioma of the frontal bone.

Hemangioma of the skull is a benign solitary tumor, often found in the frontal or parietal area. A hemangioma lesion typically involves the outer table rather than the inner, but its complete removal at the diploe level is difficult. Full-thickness resection at the calvaria is often needed to ensure a free margin, but it will leave a bony defect that requires reconstruction. Although curettage and covering of the lesion with alloplastic material are a simple treatment option for hemangioma of the skull, it does not always prevent recurrence. Hence, complete resection is needed. As our technica

Facial asymmetry with enlarged frontal sinus and hyperplasia of the cranial, nasal, and mandible bones.

The conditions of facial asymmetry are caused by congenital or acquired diseases, and several unclassifiable syndromes with unknown etiologies exist. In this report, a case of facial asymmetry with enlarged frontal sinus and hyperplasia of the frontal cranial bone and nasal bone is presented. Although the etiology of the facial malformation was clear, it was thought that the cause of the enlarged frontal sinus was related to the unidentified bony hyperplasia and facial asymmetry related to hemimandibular hyperplasia.

[Osteoplasty of osseous defects of the frontal bone and orbital roof--indications, technique and results].

From 1972 to 1992, 65 patients with traumatic or postoperative defects of the orbitocranial skeleton were operated on at the department for maxillofacial surgery, University of Essen. Until 1989 alloplastic reconstruction with PMMA implants or autogenous bone grafts of the iliac crest were preferred. Since 1989 we have utilized autogenous calvarial bone grafts (17 cases). CT based models of the defect helped to select calvarial donor sites of appropriate size and contour. The calvarial autografts provided high resistance against resorption. Until now, we have seen no major donor site morbidity

Primary reconstruction of depressed frontal bone fracture including cranialization of frontal sinus and repair of forehead skin: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A compound depressed skull fracture … r case report aims to enhance the existing literature by providing an overview of the management of frontal bone and frontal sinus fractures. We will emphasize key aspects such as the timing of surgery (early vs. delayed), the risks of infection and seizures, and the selection of prophylactic antibiotics. We present a case of PCCI with DSF that resulted in a f …

A Rare Case of Giant Intradiploeic Epidermal Cyst of the Frontal Bone with Intracranial Extension.

Calvarial intradiploeic epidermal cyst are very rare neoplasms which can have intracranial extension. These cysts can attain a large size and can cause lytic destruction of the calvarium resembling malignancy. Since these lesions are benign complete excision is curative. We report the case of a 77-year-old male patient who presented with a large swelling on the forehead. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an expansile lytic lesion with intracranial extension. Complete excision of the lesion with cranioplasty was done. Histopathology was consistent with the epidermal cyst

A reliable surgical technique for the management of growing fractures of the frontal bone involving the orbit.

PURPOSE: Growing fractures involving the orbit occur infrequently. Due to the risk of neurological trauma and the ophthalmic sequelae of progressive intraorbital expansion of the fracture, surgical management is indicated. There is no accepted standard in the approach to the surgical management of these patients. The aim of this paper is to describe a reliable technique for the repair of growing fractures and discuss the long-term outcome. METHODS: We present two cases in which a technique using Norian CRS® (Craniofacial Repair System) fast set putty over a Medpor® scaffold was used to repair

Frontal bone remodeling for gender reassignment of the male forehead: a gender-reassignment surgery.

Gender-reassignment therapy, especially for reshaping of the forehead, can be an effective treatment to improve self-esteem. Contouring of the cranial vault, especially of the forehead, still is a rarely performed surgical procedure for gender reassignment. In addition to surgical bone remodeling, several materials have been used for remodeling and refinement of the frontal bone. But due to shortcomings of autogenous bone material and the disadvantages of polyethylene or methylmethacrylate, hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) composed of tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate seems to be an al…

Demineralized bone matrix and fat autograft in a rabbit model of frontal sinus obliteration.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigate the efficacy of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) as a material for frontal sinus obliteration in a rabbit model. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Twenty-four New Zealand White rabbits were divided into four groups, and the study was carried out to two time periods. Twelve rabbits underwent frontal sinus obliteration with fat autograft, and 12 rabbits underwent the procedure with DBM. At 12 weeks, six control and six study rabbits were killed. The remaining 12 rabbits were killed at 36 weeks. All specimens underwent radiologic evaluation with spiral CT followed

Frontal bone advancement stability with or without microplate fixation: an experimental study in rabbits.

Recent advancements in surgical correction of coronal suture craniosynostosis involve the overcorrection of a frontal bone segment to allow unrestricted growth of the developing brain. However, problems with segment stability and collapse have been reported. Such problems may be alleviated with microplate fixation of the segments. The present experimental study tests this hypothesis in a growing rabbit frontal bone advancement model. Sixteen 6-week-old rabbits were divided into three groups, consisting of animals with short bone segments advanced with two bone struts and fixed with Vicryl, lon…

Postraumatic frontal sinus obliteration with calvarial bone dust and demineralized bone matrix: a long term prospective study and literature review.

Defining the ideal material for frontal sinus obliteration remains controversial. Autogenous cancellous bone is effective because of its biological properties: it undergoes fast revascularization acting as an active scaffold for bone healing, but is linked to additional donor site morbidity. Bone dust harvesting from the skull surface produces no sequelae but availability is limited. Many efforts have been made to overcome these drawbacks, and an ideal bone substitute sought. Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBX; Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, Edison, NJ, USA) is a commercially available pro
