CONTEXT: Pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) are the most common form of liver abscesses in the United States. Most cases are caused by enteric bacteria and anaerobes. We report a case of PLA caused by a rare pathogen, Fusobacterium nucleatum, from an unusual primary site of infection.
CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old male presented with subacute fever. Initial work-up revealed leukocytosis and elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Dental examination and Panorex x-ray were normal. Imaging of the liver with abdominal computed tomography demonstrated a 5.5 cm abscess in the right lobe of the liver. Cultur

A young woman in her 20s presented with fever, abdominal pain and malodourous vaginal discharge. She was found to be in septic shock, in the setting of a recent medical abortion with subsequent intrauterine device placement. Her blood cultures grew Fusobacterium necrophorum Despite appropriate antibiotic therapy, the fever failed to defervesce. Subsequent evaluation revealed septic thrombophlebitis of the right gonadal vein and branches of the right iliac vein. She improved with a prolonged course of targeted antimicrobial therapy.

From 1974 to 1994, 504 isolates of Prevotella and Porphyromonas spp. were obtained from 435 (21%) of 2033 specimens from 418 children. They included 160 (32%) Pr. melaninogenica, 105 (21%) Pr. intermedia, 84 (17%) P. asaccharolytica, 58 (12%) Pr. orisbuccae, and 58 (12%) Pr. oralis. Most Prevotella and Porphyromonas spp. were isolated from abscesses (176), pulmonary infections (85), ear infections (82), wound infections (44), peritonitis (38), paronychia (15) and chronic sinusitis (14). Predisposing conditions were noted in 111 (27%) of the cases; these included previous surgery in 41 (10%), f

After parturition fewer first dominant follicles are selected in the ovary ipsilateral to the previously gravid uterine horn in cattle. However, the presence of a large oestradiol-secreting follicle in the ipsilateral ovary is a predictor of fertility, possibly due to a localised effect of oestradiol which increases the rate of elimination of the ubiquitous uterine bacterial contamination that occurs after calving. The present study tested the hypothesis that oestradiol reduces uterine bacterial contamination when administered into the uterine lumen around the expected time for selection of th

A 22-year-old male, with a history of recreational drug use, was admitted with a 24-hour history of sore throat, bilateral otalgia, fever, chills, sweats, and pain in the upper chest. The blood cultures were positive for Fusobacterium necrophorum. A thoracic and neck soft tissue computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an intratonsillar abscess and pulmonary septic emboli. Initial treatment with Piperacillin-tazobactam and Clindamycin was de-escalated after 5 days. The patient made a complete recovery after 22 days of antibiotic treatment.

An adolescent girl with a history of frequent electronic cigarette use of nicotine was hospitalized with severe necrotizing pneumonia. Blood cultures obtained before the administration of empirical broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics had positive results for the growth of Fusobacterium necrophorum The pathogen is an uncommon but well-known cause of anaerobic pneumonia with unique features that are collectively referred to as Lemierre syndrome or postanginal sepsis. The syndrome begins as a pharyngeal infection. Untreated, the infection progresses to involve the ipsilateral internal jugular

BACKGROUND: Lemierre syndrome, or postanginal sepsis, was first described in the early part of this century and is characterized by pharyngitis, followed by high fever and rigors, cervical adenopathy, thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, distant abscess formation, and icterus, associated with isolation of Fusobacterium necrophorum from blood.
METHODS: This report describes a case of postanginal sepsis and reviews the medical literature on postanginal sepsis obtained through the MEDLINE data base using Fusobacterium as the key search word.
RESULTS: The features of Lemierre syndrome

A 24-year-old woman with a recent diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis presented with fever and left upper quadrant pain. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a splenic abscess that at laparotomy was found to have ruptured. This case illustrates a rare cause of splenic abscess and a rare complication of infectious mononucleosis.

Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella loescheii are anaerobic gram-negative rods that exist in the oral cavity. To our knowledge, pediatric central nervous system complications with these pathogens have not been well described. An 11-year-old previously healthy vaccinated female child presented for 2 weeks of sinusitis that progressed to left arm and leg hemiplegia. Initial neuroimaging demonstrated a superior sagittal sinus thrombosis and a right hemispheric subdural empyema with midline shift, necessitating surgical evacuation. Culture of the subdural accumulation demonstrated coinfection o

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is associated with high morbidity and can cause serious and life-threatening complications. In Denmark, the most commonly isolated bacteria are Fusobacterium necrophorum and Streptococcus pyogenes gr. A. The incidence of PTA in Denmark is 41/100,000/year, the highest incidence ever reported for PTA. There is no definite consensus on the treatment. We recommend most patients treated with puncture and antibiotics as outpatients, and if necessary acute tonsillectomy instead of interval tonsillectomy. Steroids may be of value.

UNLABELLED: The diverse Fusobacterium genus contains species implicated in multiple clinical pathologies, including periodontal disease, preterm birth, and colorectal cancer. The lack of genetic tools for manipulating these organisms leaves us with little understanding of the genes responsible for adherence to and invasion of host cells. Actively invading Fusobacterium species can enter host cells independently, whereas passively invading species need additional factors, such as compromise of mucosal integrity or coinfection with other microbes. We applied whole-genome sequencing and comparati

Some bacterial infections involve potentially complex mixtures of species that can now be distinguished using next-generation DNA sequencing. We present a case of mastoiditis where Gram stain, culture, and molecular diagnosis were nondiagnostic or discrepant. Next-generation sequencing implicated coinfection of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Actinomyces israelii, resolving these diagnostic discrepancies.

Pathogenic bacteria adapt to distinct disease environments, but whether these adaptations create therapeutic vulnerabilities remains unclear. Fusobacterium nucleatum has emerged as a key microbial player in colorectal cancer (CRC), yet its strain-specific virulence mechanisms remain poorly defined. In this pilot study of 16 clinical F. nucleatum isolates from CRC patients (n=6), Crohn's disease patients (n=6), colon of healthy individuals (n=3) and an oral lesion (n=1), a subset of CRC-derived strains produced three- to fourfold higher levels of endogenous indole. Exogenous indole treatment di

Fusobacterium nucleatum, a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium abundantly found in the human oral cavity, is widely recognized as a key pathobiont responsible for the initiation and progression of periodontal diseases due to its remarkable aggregative capabilities. Numerous clinical studies have linked F. nucleatum with unfavorable prognostic outcomes in various malignancies. In further research, scholars have partially elucidated the mechanisms underlying F. nucleatum's impact on various types of cancer, thus gaining a certain comprehension of the role played by F. nucleatum in cancer. In this

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a gram-negative bacillius commonly found in oropharynx and is traditionally associated with Lemierre syndrome, which is characterized by history of recent oropharyngeal infection, internal jugular vein thrombosis, and isolation of anaerobic pathogens, mainly Fuosobacterium necrophorum. However, recent evidence indicated that F. nucleatum is also a normal resident of human gut. Less than a dozen of case reports had linked F. nucleatum to gastrointestinal variant of Lemierre syndrome with portal vein thrombosis. However, F. nucleatum bacteremia-associated hepatic vein
