Examining the Role of Fear of Falling on Gait Parameters and Short-Term Gait Adaptation in Older Adults.

Background: Motor adaptation is a process where movements need to be modified in response to changes in the task, environment, or organism itself. Even a very short-term process of adaptation to different movement execution conditions leads to improvements in task performance. There is no information in the literature on whether such a gain would be present in older adults with different fear of falling levels (FoF). Methods: Thirty older adults with various FoF underwent short-term adaptive gait training on a treadmill. Participants' spatiotemporal and foot loading characteristics were assess

The effect of gait modification on the response of medial meniscus extrusion during gait in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: An increase in medial meniscus extrusion during weight-bearing conditions is associated with the progression of medial knee osteoarthritis (OA). Toe-out gait modification has been known to reduce the knee adduction moment (KAM); however, its effect on reducing the increase in medial meniscus extrusion in patients with knee OA remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: To (1) evaluate the effect of toe-out gait on the increase in medial meniscus extrusion and the KAM in patients with medial knee OA and (2) investigate the synergetic effect of lateral wedge insoles in combination with toe-

Using Sensor Technology to Measure Gait Capacity and Gait Performance in Rehabilitation Inpatients with Neurological Disorders.

The aim of this study was to objectively assess and compare gait capacity and gait performance in rehabilitation inpatients with stroke or incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) using inertial measurement units (IMUs). We investigated how gait capacity (what someone can do) is related to gait performance (what someone does). Twenty-two inpatients (11 strokes, 11 iSCI) wore ankle positioned IMUs during the daytime to assess gait. Participants completed two circuits to assess gait capacity. These were videotaped to certify the validity of the IMU algorithm. Regression analyses were used to investi

Characterising gait in paediatric neuromuscular disorders: an observational study of spatio-temporal gait in a clinical cohort.

AIM: Few studies have characterised the relationship between disease and gait function in children and young people with rare neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). This study aimed to describe the relationship between disease and gait in a large paediatric cohort from a neuromuscular outpatient clinic. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional study of gait in independently ambulant children and young people aged 4-21 years with a clinical or genetically confirmed NMD. Participants traversed an electronic walkway barefoot and in footwear at self-selected and fast pace. Analysis of disease included a

Instrumented Gait Analysis to Identify Persistent Deficits in Gait Stability in Adults With Chronic Vestibular Loss.

IMPORTANCE: Regaining the ability to walk safely is a high priority for adults with vestibular loss. Thus, practitioners need comprehensive knowledge of vestibulopathic gait to design, provide, and/or interpret outcomes of interventions. To date, few studies have characterized the effects of vestibular loss on gait. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the use of an instrumented 2-minute walk test in adults with vestibular loss, to further characterize vestibulopathic gait, and to assess whether those with chronic vestibular loss have enduring gait deficits. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cro

Investigating the Relationship of the Functional Gait Assessment to Spatiotemporal Parameters of Gait and Quality of Life in Individuals With Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Walking in the community is an important aspect of independence and quality of life (QOL) that poses challenges for individuals with stroke. This study investigated whether performance on the Functional Gait Assessment (FGA) differentiated spatiotemporal gait parameters, QOL, and fall history of community-ambulating individuals with stroke. We hypothesized that those scoring higher on the FGA would present with better gait speed and cadence, stride width and length, and improved load time on the paretic limb, report a higher QOL, and be less likely to have a fall histor

Gait disorders in the elderly and dual task gait analysis: a new approach for identifying motor phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Gait disorders and gait analysis under single and dual-task conditions are topics of great interest, but very few studies have looked for the relevance of gait analysis under dual-task conditions in elderly people on the basis of a clinical approach. METHODS: An observational study including 103 patients (mean age 76.3 ± 7.2, women 56%) suffering from gait disorders or memory impairment was conducted. Gait analysis under dual-task conditions was carried out for all patients. Brain MRI was performed in the absence of contra-indications. Three main gait variables were measured: walk

Four Essential Tremor Cases with Moderately Impaired Gait: How Impaired can Gait be in this Disease?

BACKGROUND: A body of literature is emerging regarding gait/balance impairments observed in essential tremor (ET) patients. Although impairment is generally mild, the full extent of the spectrum remains undefined. We present four ET cases with more severe gait/balance impairment. METHODS: A BATTERY OF SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE GAIT/BALANCE ASSESSMENTS WAS PERFORMED: the Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale, the Berg Balance Scale, and the Tinetti Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA). Tandem missteps during 10 steps were counted. Quantitative gait testing was performed (GAITR

Leg lengthening as part of gait improvement surgery in cerebral palsy: an evaluation using gait analysis.

Eleven children with hemiplegic or an asymmetric diplegic cerebral palsy who had a preoperative leg length discrepancy of more than 2.5 cm underwent gait improvement surgery which included leg length equalisation. Sagittal plane kinematics and kinetics before and about 3 years after surgery for the lengthened limb and contralateral limb were evaluated. Preoperatively the unaffected limb had excessive stance phase flexion at the hip and knee, and dorsal flexion at the ankle joint. These changes could be partially reversed to produce a kinematic gait pattern comparable to age matched normal cont

Prediction of gait subtypes in children with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy using Edinburgh Visual Gait Score.

OBJECTIVES: Early and accurate gait subtype classification in children with spastic bilateral cerebral palsy (CP) is essential for guiding rehabilitation. While three-dimensional gait analysis is limited by cost and accessibility, the Edinburgh Visual Gait Score (EVGS) provides a feasible observational tool. This study evaluates the discriminative value of EVGS-derived features using machine learning to support gait phenotype stratification. METHODS: This retrospective study included 40 children with spastic bilateral CP (80 lower limbs). EVGS item-level and subscale scores were extracted fro

Quantitative Analysis of the Gait Variability and Asymmetry Using Inertial Measurement Unit During Dual-task Gait.

Well-established connections exist between increased gait variability and greater fall likelihood in human movement. Therefore, the assessment of gait symmetry can facilitate clinicians' decision-making in the treatment and evaluation of the progression of several diseases. This study proposed a workflow that used two self-developed inertial sensing measurement units (IMU) to collect the lower limb gait data of five subjects and then extracted the gait characteristic parameters to quantify the running process during a single-task condition and a dual-task condition, which requires additional c

Inertial Sensor Location for Ground Reaction Force and Gait Event Detection Using Reservoir Computing in Gait.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have shown promising outcomes for estimating gait event detection (GED) and ground reaction force (GRF). This study aims to determine the best sensor location for GED and GRF prediction in gait using data from IMUs for healthy and medial knee osteoarthritis (MKOA) individuals. In this study, 27 healthy and 18 MKOA individuals participated. Participants walked at different speeds on an instrumented treadmill. Five synchronized IMUs (Physilog®, 200 Hz) were placed on the lower limb (top of the shoe, heel, above medial malleolus, middle and front of tibia, and on

Quantification of pathological gait parameter thresholds of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus patients in clinical gait analysis.

The aim of the study was to distinguish the hypokinetic gait disorder in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) patients from the gait decline in the elderly population by quantifying pathological gait parameter thresholds utilizing a multiple condition gait assessment. 55 NPH patients and 55 age-matched healthy subjects underwent a standardized gait assessment with eight gait conditions. Spatiotemporal gait parameters were assessed through a pressure-sensitive carpet. Statistical analysis consisted of a binary logistic regression (BLR) model, logistic curve-fit evaluated by a Chi-squa

Age-related gait standards for healthy children and young people: the GOS-ICH paediatric gait centiles.

OBJECTIVE: To develop paediatric gait standards in healthy children and young people. METHODS: This observational study aims to address the lack of population standards for gait measurements in children. Analysing gait in children affected by neurological or musculoskeletal conditions is an important component of paediatric assessment but is often confounded by developmental changes. The standards presented here do not require clinician expertise to interpret and offer an alternative to developmental tables of normalised gait data. Healthy children aged 1-19 years were recruited from communit

Effects of Gait Training with Lower-Limb Robotic Exoskeletons and Exoskeleton-Type Devices on Gait Symmetry and Gait Speed in Patients with Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Gait asymmetry and reduced gait speed (GS) are common after stroke. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of gait training with lower-limb robotic exoskeletons or exoskeleton-type devices on gait asymmetry and GS compared with conventional rehabilitation or non-robotic gait training. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and Scopus were searched from inception to 21 June 2026. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting spatial gait asymmetry (SGA), temporal gait asymmetry (TGA), or GS were included. Standardized mean differences (SMDs; Hedges' g) and

The Utility of Gait Deviation Index (GDI) and Gait Variability Index (GVI) in Detecting Gait Changes in Spastic Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy Children Using Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFO).

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) children present complex and heterogeneous motor disorders that cause gait deviations. Clinical gait analysis (CGA) is used to identify, understand and support the management of gait deviations in CP. Children with CP often use ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) to facilitate and optimize their walking ability. The aim of this study was to assess whether the gait deviation index (GDI) and the gait variability index (GVI) results can reflect the changes of spatio-temporal and kinematic gait parameters in spastic hemiplegic CP children wearing AFO. METHOD: The study group

Management Approaches to Spastic Gait Disorders.

Spastic gait presents clinically as the net mechanical consequence of neurological impairments of spasticity, weakness, and abnormal synergies and their interactions with the ground reaction force in patients with upper motor neuron syndromes and with some neuromuscular diseases. It is critical to differentiate whether the primary problem is weakness or spasticity, thus better understanding different phenotypes of spastic gait disorders. Pelvic girdle abnormality plays a pivotal role in determining the clinical presentation of gait disorders, since it determines the body vector and compensator
