Falls are a leading cause of serious injury and restricted participation among persons with stroke (PwS). Reactive balance control is essential for fall prevention, however, only a few studies have explored the effects of lesion characteristics (location and extent) on balance control in PwS. We aimed to assess the impact of lesion characteristics on reactive and anticipatory balance capacity, gait, and hemiparetic lower limb function, in PwS. Forty-six subacute PwS were exposed to forward, backward, right and left unannounced horizontal surface translations in six increasing intensities while

BACKGROUND: Gait indices were developed to represent the magnitude of impairment extracted from a gait analysis with a single value. The Gillette Gait Index (GGI), and the Gait Deviation Index (GDI) are 2 widely used indices that represent gait impairment differently based on their statistical properties. Our purpose was to (1) report on the results of gait analysis for a broad spectrum of pediatric conditions using the GGI and GDI, and (2) identify the parameters that dominate impairment.
METHODS: A total of 1439 children with 13 different diagnoses with a complete, baseline gait analysis we…

This report describes the use of a pressure-sensitive walkway to evaluate an uncommon case of a cat with dorsal luxation of the left scapula and an amputated right forelimb. The findings suggest that limb amputation induced load redistribution mostly to the contralateral forelimb despite the scapular luxation.

Gait analysis system was used for 3 outpatients who suffered from hemorrhagic stroke 1 year before. They presented with hemiplegia and spasticity. A new treatment was applied to paralyzed muscles of lower limb to improve both static and dynamic balance. The refined system showed that asymmetric load distribution improved in all patients. By contrast, kinematical data improved in 1 patient only. Analysis of the vertical force showed a partial improvement after treatment. More controlled studies are necessary to verify the results of such an approach. A standard therapeutical protocol for spasti…

There is little knowledge of the functional performance of patients with talocalcaneal coalition because of the marginal quantitative information accessible using current motion-analysis and plantar pressure-measurement techniques. A novel system was developed for comprehensively measuring foot-floor interaction during the stance phase of gait that integrates instrumentation for simultaneously measuring bony segment position, ground reaction force, and plantar pressure with synchronization of spatial and temporal variables. An advanced anatomically based analysis of foot joint rotations was al

Traumatic brain injury causes unpredictable errors in the patient's gait by introducing varying mixtures of spasticity, contractures, primitive flexion and extension synergies, and impaired selective control. Surgical release or transfer of the offending muscles can improve the patient's ability to walk if functional errors have been accurately identified. While clinical testing is inadequate, instrumented motion analysis and dynamic electromyography can supply an accurate definition of the abnormalities in muscle action and provide guidelines for distinguishing local from referred motion erro

Comprehensive gait analysis is valuable in understanding the performance of patients with lower limb disorders. The gait pattern of adult patients with untreated congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) has not yet been reported. We studied the gait pattern in nine women (mean age 31.4 years) with Crows group IV CDH. Six had unilateral and three had bilateral involvement. They were not treated during childhood and had no pain at the time of study. A control group comprised 15 normal female subjects of the same age group. Gait was studied using a motion-analysis system, force plateforms, and com…

By using the combined, computerized analysis of stroboscopic photography, pattern recognition devices, electromyography and foot switch outputs, gait patterns were studied in 15 stroke patients with foot-drop. Three patients were treated with a peroneal nerve stimulator for five weeks; six received intensive physical therapy; and six received both physical therapy and biofeedback training three times a week for five weeks. Each patient was examined at initial visit and after five weeks. Based upon case evaluations, both the patients with the stimulator treatment and those with biofeedback trai

BACKGROUND: The 180° turning movement can be divided into the approach phase, turning phase, and departure phase. Compared with integral turning research, phase‑specific analysis is capable of revealing more detailed and comprehensive turning characteristics. To date, few studies have focused on the phase‑specific characteristics of turning movements in patients with post‑stroke hemiplegia.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the phase‑specific characteristics and differences in 180° turning movements between patients with post‑stroke hemiplegia and healthy older adults?
METHODS: A motion capture sy

Foot pronation is a prevalent condition known to contribute to a range of lower extremity injuries. Numerous interventions have been employed to address this issue, many of which are expensive and necessitate specific facilities. Gait retraining has been suggested as a promising intervention for modifying foot pronation, offering the advantage of being accessible and independent of additional materials or specific time. We aimed to systematically review the literature on the effect of gait retraining on foot pronation. We searched four databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Emb

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome of unknown aetiopathogenesis. Its development and maintenance are related to the interplay of biological, psychological, and contextual factors. Among the contextual factors, sociodemographic aspects are poorly elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between sociodemographic/clinical factors and symptom severity measures using a web-based registry of patients with FM.
METHODS: Adult patients with an ACR 2010/2011 diagnosis of FM underwent a clinical evaluation and were asked to complete questionnaires

Disruptions in gait function are common after concussion in adolescents; however, the neuromotor control deficits driving these gait disruptions are not well known. Fifteen concussed (age mean [SD]): 17.4 [0.6], 13 females, days since injury: 26.3 [9.9]) and 17 uninjured (age: 18.0 [0.7], 10 females) adolescents completed 3 trials each of single-task gait and dual-task gait (DT). During DT, participants simultaneously walked while completing a serial subtraction task. Gait metrics and variability in instantaneous mean frequency in lower extremity muscles were captured by inertial sensors and s

Progressive spasticity and gait impairment is the functional hallmark of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), but due to inter-individual variability, longitudinal studies on its progression are scarce. We investigated the progression of gait deficits via mobile digital measurements in conjunction with clinical and patient-reported outcome parameters. Our cohort included adult HSP patients (n = 55) with up to 77 months of follow-up. Gait speed showed a significant association with SPRS progression. Changes in stride time and gait variability correlated to fear of falling and quality of life, p

INTRODUCTION: Lisfranc injuries involve any bony or ligamentous disruption of the tarsometatarsal joint. Outcome results after treatment are mainly evaluated using patient-reported outcome measures (PROM), physical examination and radiographic findings. Less is known about the kinematics during gait.
METHODS: Nineteen patients (19 feet) treated for Lisfranc injury were recruited. Patients with conservative treatment and surgical treatment consisting of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or primary arthrodesis were included. PROM, radiographic findings and gait analysis using the Oxfo…

Previous studies have indicated that gait rhythm fluctuations are useful for characterizing certain pathologies of neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease (HD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, no previous study has investigated the properties of frequency range distributions of gait rhythms. Therefore, in our study, empirical mode decomposition was implemented for decomposing the time series of gait rhythms into intrinsic mode functions from the high-frequency component to the low-frequency component sequentially. Then, Kendall's coef

Comparison of normative data between gait analysis services offers the potential to harmonise data collection protocols. This paper presents a method for such a comparison based on an assumption that the root mean square difference from the inter-service mean is a reflection of systematic differences in protocols and that the average standard deviation includes a component attributable to within-centre measurement variability. Substantial normative datasets from two highly respected clinical services were compared. The RMS difference for the difference from the inter-centre mean was less than …

An objective analysis of foot loading characteristics was carried out with instrumented gait analysis and pedobarography. The clinical results were overall fair for pain, range of motion and walking distance. The AOFAS also showed fair results (mean: 78.1) at follow-up. Gait analysis revealed alterations in kinematic and kinetic parameters for the o …

BACKGROUND: Dynamic ankle spasticity during walking is a common complication after stroke. It remains unclear which clinical indicators predict dynamic spasticity and whether three-dimensional (3D) gait parameters can reflect its severity. METHODS: 3D gait analysis data were obtained from 42 patients with dynamic spasticity and a 1:1 propensity score-matched control group. Spasticity was assessed using the Modified Tardieu Scale (MTS). Dynamic kinematic and spatiotemporal gait indicators were analyzed. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to examine associations between gait parameters …
