BACKGROUND: Trichobezoars are composed of hair or fibres. The typical patient presenting with a trichobezoar is an adolescent girl experiencing mental disturbance or retardation.
CASE REPORT: Three girls with trichobezoars were seen. Two of them, 4 and 15 years old, had serious digestive antecedents (corrosive oesophagogastritis and oesophageal atresia, respectively) and had undergone previous surgery. Two cases of metastatic gestational trophoblastic neoplasms (MGTN) diagnosed by mediastinoscopic and gastroscopic biopsies, respectively, are presented. Both patients are young women who presented with hemorrhagic events involving the CNS in one case and the gastrointestinal tract in the other, with histories of recent pregnancies. All gastric ulcers diagnosed during the period November, 1969-May, 1974, were prospectively evaluated by roentgenography, fiberoptic gastroscopy, directed biopsy, and brush cytology. Gastroscopy was performed routinely in patients with radiologic diagnosis of gastric ulcer or questionable findings, and in symptomatic individuals with negative roentgenograms. A total of 123/142 ulcers, 109 benign, 14 malignant, were available for complete follow-up. Gastroscopy was correct in 106 of 109 benign ulcers visualized. A case of gastric phyto-mucous bezoar++ in an edentulous patient with chronic gastritis is reported. The effective medical treatment consisted of partial gastroscopic bezoar crumbling, gastric lavage with 1% sodium bicarbonate solution, and endoscopic removal of residual bezoar. A patient with gastric ulceration and hemorrhage due to multiple antral gastric submucosal lipomas is presented. The number and close apposition of the lipomas resulted in loss of the usual gastroscopic and radiologic findings associated with these benign tumors.
