The finding of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in particles sinking to the deep northwestern Mediterranean Sea confirms the role of the latter as ballast for the transfer of pollutants to the deep sea. The transfer of particulate matter down to the deep is enhanced during atmosphere-driven, high-energy physical oceanographic processes like dense shelf water cascading (DSWC), which is caused by winter surface heat losses and evaporation. Here we present data from samples collected during winter 2012, when dense shelf water formation and subsequent cascading triggered the flushing of large amo

The human fossils, artefacts and faunal remains from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) deposits of Klasies River Main Site have featured prominently in discussions of the evolution of modern human morphology and the emergence of human behavioral modernity. Nearly 40 human fossils were uncovered by John Wymer's (1967-1968) excavations, and subsequent work by Hilary Deacon (1984-1995) has produced an additional dozen specimens. Many of the latter have been described, but most of the dental remains have been afforded only cursory mention and provisional identification. These specimens are documented her

The mechanisms of phosphorus (P) adsorption and immobility were investigated in laboratory experiments. The sediments and waters used were taken from an inner-city heavily polluted canal. Addition of KH2PO4 into the operated experimental units, with and without (i.e., static) intermittent sediment resuspension, were made similar to the external P input and carried out periodically. The results show that the amount of the accumulative P adsorption onto the sediments was up to 363.4 mg x kg(-1) under the conditions of sediment disturbance over a 39-day period, and it was evidently higher than th

Analysis of soil/sediment samples collected in the southern Louisiana, USA, region three weeks after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita passed was performed using sequential extraction procedures to determine the origin, mode of occurrence, biological availability, mobilization, and transport of trace elements in the environment. Five fractions: exchangeable, bound to carbonates, bound to iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) oxides, bound to organic matter, and residual, were subsequently extracted. The toxic trace elements Pb, As, V, Cr, Cu, and Cd were analyzed in each fraction, together with Fe in 51 soil/sed

A simulation study has been done that vertical transport of conduct of phosphorus in sediment affected by iron inorganic salt. The results showed: when 10 mL or 50 mL of 1 mol/L FeCl3 solution were added to the simulation system respectively, phosphorus content in sediments was reduced, however, 30 mL of 1 mol/L FeCl3 solution was added, phosphorus content of sediments increased. Appropriate quantum iron inorganic salt will prevent phosphorus in sediment released to the water, otherwise, iron ion quantum added is too high or too low, to a certain extent, will promote the release of phosphorus

Depositional and flow patterns are first described to gain an understanding of the erosion patterns during hydraulic flushing in a reservoir. Considering the importance of this issue, two modes of flushing operation for control of sedimentation were performed in several experiments with different reservoir geometries. In order to investigate the effect of flushing and the effectiveness during free and drawdown flows, ten experiments have been conducted. The final bed morphology formed previously was used as the initial bed topography for the two modes of flushing. The entire experiments lasted

Since the toxicity of pyrethroid insecticides is known to increase at low temperatures, the use of temperature manipulation was explored as a whole-sediment toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) tool to help identify sediment samples in which pyrethroid insecticides are responsible for observed toxicity. The amphipod Hyalella azteca is commonly used for toxicity testing of sediments at a 23 degrees C test temperature. However, a temperature reduction to 18 degrees C doubled the toxicity of pyrethroids, and a further reduction to 13 degrees C tripled their toxicity. A similar response, thoug

Estuarine sediments are major reservoirs for the metals. Distribution and mobility of metals within estuaries depends strongly on their specific chemical form. In the present study, surface sediments from Zuari estuary, Goa were analysed by a sequential procedure for Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr and Co to determine their distribution in five geochemical phases (Exchangeable, carbonate, Fe-Mn oxide (reducible) organic bound (oxidisable) and residual). The total metal content, sand, silt, clay and organic carbon were also determined of the surface sediments. The total metal contents were found to be great

It is useful to have available a variety of catchment-scale water quality models that range in complexity, spatial resolution and data requirements. In a previous paper [Warren, C., Mackay, D., Whelan, M., Fox, K., 2005. Mass balance modelling of contaminants in river basins: a flexible matrix approach. Chemosphere 61, 1458-1467] a series of simple to intermediately complex mass balance models was presented which can be used for tiered exposure assessments in river basins. The connectivity of the segments is expressed using a matrix that permits flexibility in application, enabling the model t

In this study, the levels of natural and anthropogenic metal contamination (aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)) in surface sediments of three harbors along the Iranian coast of Gulf of Oman were examined and reported for the first time. Effect of grain size, mineralogy, normalization technique using Fe concentrations, and different sediment quality guidelines were discussed. Data from the harbors were compared with other harbors worldwide. Sediments inside the harbors are characterized by moder

The comprehensive effects of environmental dredging on heavy metals (HM) are still uncertain. This study comprehensively evaluates the long-term effects of dredging on the environmental risk and bioavailability of HM (Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, and As) in Lake Taihu, China, by comparing simulated dredged treated (D) and undredged (UD) sediment cores under in-situ conditions for one year. Threshold effect level (TEL), geological accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk index (RI), and ratios of secondary phase and primary phase (RSP) methods were used to assess the environmental risk o

BACKGROUND: Ancient permafrost, formed during past glacial periods, is widespread in Siberia and other Arctic regions. Even though these soils have remained below 0 °C over geological time periods, the widespread presence of bacteria and archaea in permafrost is well documented. However, the diversity of viruses in ancient permafrost of different geological ages and their potential ecological roles are still poorly understood.
RESULTS: We applied metagenomics to characterize viruses from Middle to Late Pleistocene permafrost sediments from Siberia. A total of 2697 viral operational taxonomic

We examined temporal differences in sedimentary production of monomethylmercury (MMHg) at three sites in Long Island Sound (LIS). Sediment-phase concentrations of Hg species decreased from west to east in LIS surface sediments, following the trend of organic matter. However, Hg methylation potentials, measured by incubation with an isotopic tracer (200Hg), increased from west to east. 200Hg methylation potentials were enhanced in August relative to March and June, attributable to differences in activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Organic matter and acid-volatile sulfide influenced the distr

This study aims to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics, pollution degrees, and potential ecological risks of mercury (Hg) in urban lake waters and sediments in Guangzhou, where is a typical area of Hg emission and population-economic-industrial concentration in South China. In different districts of this city, the water from 15 lakes were collected continuously from June 2020 to May 2021, and the sediments from 9 lakes were collected in 2015 and 2021. The seasonal changes of Hg concentration (Hg-C) in the water were found to be high in winter and low in summer. The spatial dis

Most of the chemical and physical interactions of interest to the astrobiology community are influenced by the mineralogy of the systems under consideration. Often, this mineralogy occurs in sediment or sediment-like aqueous microenvironments in which the early minerals differ dramatically from the mature version that results from a long diagenesis, which are tied to complex interactions of pH, redox state, concentration, and temperature. This interconnectedness is difficult to reproduce in a laboratory setting yet is essential to understanding how the physical and chemical demands of living s

Present study analyzed the seasonal and spatial distribution patterns, sources, and ecological risks of seven heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the sediments of River Ganges, finding that the majority of concentrations were lithologic, except for Cd, which was significantly higher than background standards. Elevated values of geochemical indices viz. Igeo, CF, RI, Cd, mCd, HQ, mHQ, and PN suggest moderate to high ecological risk in the benthic environment and its organisms due to the synergistic effect of heavy metals. The PEC-Qmetals revealed 8-10 % toxicity in the upstream and

Sediments accumulate persistent and toxic compounds, yet assessing their effects on benthic species remains challenging. Especially antidepressants, such as fluoxetine, are of concern due to their sediment affinity and potential to disrupt neuroendocrine functions at low concentrations. This study investigated the chronic effects of fluoxetine in the sediment-dwelling worm Lumbriculus variegatus through two 28-day sediment exposures (0.00025-25 mg/kg) conducted in accordance with OECD 225, with modifications. Endpoints encompassed multiple biological levels, including biochemical markers of ne

In rural areas, unpaved roads can drive water quality degradation via sediment inputs. Excess sediment loss from poorly maintained unpaved roads to adjacent waterways blocks sunlight, decreasing primary productivity and increasing nutrient concentrations. This is particularly relevant to Arkansas, where 85% of county roads are unpaved; however, few studies have explored the impacts of unpaved roads in rural watersheds dominated by pasture. We sampled Brush Creek (Arkansas) to understand local (i.e., road crossing type) and watershed-scale (e.g., land cover/use) controls on sediment loss. We co
