Congenital giant epulis obstructing oral cavity: newborn emergency.

The congenital epulis is a benign congenital granular cell tumor arising most often of the alveolar ridge of the jawbone. When giant, it is source of digestive discomfort disabling feeding. We report the case of a newborn female, vaginal delivery, presented with a giant intraoral tumor. Tumor obstructing the mouth of the newborn and prevent the attachment and feeding. The treatment consisted of excision of the tumor under general anesthesia. The histology of the tumor was revealed that it was an epulis.

Obstructive congenital epulis.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital epulis, known as a congenital gingival granular cell tumor, is a benign tumor and very rare in newborns. Voluminous or multiple tumors can cause mechanical obstruction of the oral cavity and may result in postnatal feeding and respiratory problems. DISCUSSION: We report the clinical case of a female full-term newborn who presented a tumor on the upper gum obtruding into the oral cavity discovered at birth. The pregnancy was followed normally with three prenatal ultrasounds, which did not show abnormalities. The mass was excised under local anesthesia on the second day

Obstructive congenital epulis in a newborn.

A neonate, with a rare, large, congenital epulis of the anterior maxilla, which resulted in oral feeding obstruction, is presented. Due to its easy accessibility, narrow pedicle to the alveolus, and benign clinical behavior, permanent eradication of the tumor by simple excision under local anesthesia was performed.

Erythroplastic lesion on the mandibular marginal gingiva.

Carcinoma of the gingiva is a significant risk to patients because the asymptomatic characteristics of erythroplastic lesions are not always readily identified. This case report shows the similarity in clinical appearance of squamous cell carcinoma of the gingiva to the common inflammatory changes associated with periodontal disease. A similar clinical presentation might be seen in any lesion with increased vascularity, including Kaposi's sarcoma associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection. Any erythroplastic change involving the oral mucosa should be viewed with suspicion and, if n

Dimeric 3,5-Bis(benzylidene)-4-piperidones: Tumor-Selective Cytotoxicity and Structure-Activity Relationships.

Background: The objective of this study is to find novel antineoplastic agents that display greater toxicity to malignant cells than to neoplasms. In addition, the mechanisms of action of representative compounds are sought. This report describes the cytotoxicity of a number of dimers of 3,5-bis(benzylidene)-4-piperidones against human malignant cells (promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 and squamous cell carcinoma HSC-2, HSC-3, and HSC-4). Methods: Tumor specificity was evaluated by the selectivity index (SI), that is the ratio of the mean CC50 for human non-malignant oral cells (gingival fibroblast

Hobnail hemangioma-a systematic review and a case report of an intraoral lesion with Dabska tumor-like features.

Hobnail hemangioma is a rare, benign vascular neoplasm. Intraoral lesions are extremely rare. To date, only seven intraoral cases of hobnail hemangiomas and two intraoral cases of Dabska tumors have been described in the English-language literature. This article presents a hobnail hemangioma case with papillary intralymphatic angioendothelioma (Dabska tumor)-like features on the gingiva of a 7-year-old female. Hobnail hemangiomas are benign lesions, but they display worrisome features on microscopic examination and can be confused with malignant vascular neoplasms. Histologically hobnail heman

Peripheral Odontogenic Fibroma in a Child.

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POdF) is a rare and benign mesenchymal odontogenic tumor that stands out as a distinctive entity. It is predominantly found in the gingiva and can present as a diagnostic challenging lesion due to its potential resem- blance to reactive oral lesions. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of a POdF in a 10-year-old child and highlight the importance of recognizing this lesion in the pediatric population. This report also explores the essential diagnostic differentials that clinicians should consider when examining a palpable soft tissue nodule with a f

Non-invasive and Locally Invasive Hypercellular Peripheral Odontogenic Fibroma in 20 Dogs.

Medical records of dogs with an initial histopathological diagnosis of odontogenic sarcoma were reviewed for information on signalment, body weight, medical history, clinical signs, physical examination and diagnostic imaging findings, surgical procedure performed, and histologic characteristics. Twenty dogs were deemed to fit the criteria following the rigorous histology review process. These tumors were characterized by hypercellularity of the spindle cell component with less intervening stroma, mitotic activity, and variable presence of odontogenic epithelium and hard substance (cementum/de

Preserving periodontal tissue in the treatment of a large peripheral ossifying fibroma: a case study.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive, benign gingival enlargement. Its etiology is not fully known. It can be seen in many different sizes in the mouth. The histopathological appearance of POF is mineralized tissue and fibrous proliferation. All relevant soft and hard tissues must be removed to prevent recurrence. Periodontal tissue remaining after excision is important for tooth preservation. With large lesions, the loss of healthy periodontal tissue is also large. Periodontal surgical approaches are important to preserve the remaining periodontal tissue. The positive effects of a

Gingival Papillomatosis as the Oral Sign of Cowden Syndrome: A Case Report.

Cowden syndrome (CS) is a rare autosomal dominant, hereditary, multiorgan disease with higher risk for malignancies (breast, thyroid, endometrium). Mucocutaneous lesions occur in 90% of cases and are characterized by facial trichilemmomas, oral mucosal papillomas, and benign acral keratoses. We present the case of a 39-year-old female patient with the chief complaint of "white spots" on the upper and lower attached gingiva accompanied with skin changes on the face, hands, and soles. The patient's family medical history revealed that her mother had an endometrial polyp and the sister had thyroi

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the gingiva.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is widely regarded as the commonest soft tissue sarcoma of adulthood which tends to occur in the deep soft tissues of the extremities and the retroperitoneum. Uncertain histogenesis and numerous subtypes make MFH a rather controversial entity. These tumours are relatively rare in the head and neck region accounting for only 1-3% of all cases of MFH. MFH exhibits a heterogenous histology of spindle cells in a characteristic storiform pattern with pleomorphic tumour cells and giant cells. A case is reported of an MFH of the gingiva in a 60-year-old woman who

[Congenital granular cell epulis: a case report].

Congenital granular cell epulis is a rare benign lesion occuring exclusively in newborns as a solitary or multiple swelling of alveolar mucosa of either maxilla or mandible. A case of a female newborn who presented with multiple swellings of both maxillary and mandibular alveolar mucosa measuring up to 10 mm is presented. On 24th postnatal day, the lesions were under general anesthesia excised and sent for microscopic examination, which revealed congenital granular cell epulis. Immunohistochemically, granular cells showed expression of both vimentin and PGP 9.5, whereas the proof of S100 prote

Peripheral odontogenic myxoma located on the maxillary gingiva: report of a case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic myxoma is a rare, benign neoplasm and is often located in the maxillofacial region centrally most common in the mandible. Soft tissue localization that can be classified as a peripheral myxoma is rarely seen than the central localization. Peripheral myxoma is slowly growing and less aggressive compared to the central myxoma and has a low recurrence rate. CASE REPORT: In this presentation, the patient with a peripheral odontogenic myxoma of the posterior maxillary gingiva was presented with histological findings following surgery, and the clinical differences and charac

Gingival myofibroma in children: report of 4 cases with immunohistochemical findings.

Oral myofibroma is a rare tumour which usually occurs in children and has been reported in the mandible, tongue, buccal mucosa with only a few cases reported from the gingiva. It appears alarming clinically due to its fast growth which may mimic a malignancy. However, it is completely benign and is usually treated by complete surgical excision with excellent prognosis. Clinically, myofibroma presents as a single swelling when it occurs on the gingiva, and more common lesions such as fibrous epulis, pyogenic granuloma and peripheral odontogenic fibroma, myofibroma are usually considered in the

Congenital gingival granular cell tumour.

Congenital gingival granular cell tumours are rare lesions which have only occasionally been reported in the UK. Clinical features are of a benign lesion which occurs almost exclusively in newborn, Caucasian females and the anterior maxilla is the commonest site. Treatment consists of local excision and is curative. The terminology concerning this condition has been rather confused because of uncertainty regarding the histogenesis of these tumours and the similar histological appearance to adults granular cell myoblastoma occurring at other intraoral sites. The exact histogenesis of these tumo

Peripheral ameloblastoma: case report.

A case of peripheral ameloblastoma, a rare odontogenic tumour, is presented. This tumour appears to differ from endo-osseous ameloblastoma by the absence of local malignancy. It exhibits a less aggressive and destructive behavior and does not invade the underlying bone. Conservative treatment of the tumour is the treatment of choice.
