Treatment of gingival recession using free gingival graft with fibrin fibronectin sealing system: A novel approach.

Periodontal plastic surgery is the branch of periodontology that is focused mainly on the correction or elimination of mucogingival problems associated with lack of attached gingiva, a shallow vestibule and aberrant frenum. Various mucogingival surgical procedures are used to halt the progression of the gingival recession and to correct poor esthetic appearance. Free gingival autograft is one of the most common techniques used for a gingival recession in areas of inadequate attached gingiva in the mandibular anterior region. Fibrin sealants are human plasma derivatives that mimic the final sta…

Free gingival autograft for augmentation of keratinized tissue in apical to gingival recession - A case report.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of the mucogingival problem is one of the main objectives of the periodontal therapy. The insufficient or absent attached gingiva increases the risk of development of gingival recessions. METHOD: One patient with Miller class II gingival recession and small vestibule depth in the frontal mandibular region was selected for treatment. Autogenous free gingival grafts harvested from the palatal mucosa were used to gain the attached gingiva. RESULT: The initial healing completed in 2 weeks without complication. The augmentation of the attached gingival tissue using the f…

Introduction of a Novel Anatomic Recession Ratio in the Treatment of Gingival Recession: A Proof-of-Principle Study.

The present study introduces a novel "anatomic recession ratio" (ARR) and evaluates the clinical outcomes of using a tunnel technique (TUN) with a connective tissue graft (CTG) for root coverage (RC). Sixteen systemically healthy patients contributing a total of 33 recession types 1 and 2 were treated with TUN + CTG. The predictive value of a panel of baseline clinical parameters (ARR) on RC was evaluated 12 months postoperatively. At 12 months, mean recession depth decreased from 2.74 ± 0.22 mm to 0.46 ± 0.13 mm (P < .0001); 19 sites (58%) showed complete RC, and the mean RC rate was 88.85% ±

Global prevalence of gingival recession: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the global prevalence of gingival recession (GR) in the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Population-based observational studies reporting the prevalence of GR and published from 1991 to 2021 were identified from five electronic databases and manual searches. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklist for Prevalence Studies. The pooled prevalence of GR was calculated by using a random-effect model. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GR…

Three-Dimensional Collagen Membranes Challenging the Gold Standard in Gingival Recession.

Gingival recession is a commonly encountered chief complaint in a dental office, most commonly presenting as pain or sensitivity on intake of food or sometimes just seen as an esthetic concern which may present in a localized or generalized form. Such interest toward dental esthetics has encouraged clinicians to formulate newer minimally invasive surgical techniques which are short but still deliver predictable long-term benefits in restoring the patient's smile. One such method was evaluated in the present short communication where a commercially available, biodegradable, and volume-stable co…

[Long-term stability of periodontal root coverage procedures for gingival recession].

Gingival recession could result in root exposure, dental hypersensitivity and poor aesthetics. It has been demonstrated that varieties of root coverage procedures can significantly improve gingival recession in short-term (≤6 months), of which coronally advanced flap combined with connective tissue graft is the gold standard technique for treatment of gingival recession. It could obtain the optimally complete root coverage and maintain long-term stability (≥2 years). However, clinical knowledge about the long-term effectiveness of the other alternative graft materials remain very limited. Base…

Gingival unit transfer using in the Miller III recession defect treatment.

The most significant factor for the success in soft tissue grafts is the synergistic relation between vascular configuration and involved tissues. In the soft tissue graft procedures, site specific donor tissue is assumed to have improved potential for function and aesthetic survive at recipient sites. On a clinical level, using site specific gingival unit graft that placed on traditionally prepared recipient site, results in predictable root coverage. In this case report the clinical effectiveness of gingival unit transfer (GUT) technique performed on Miller III recession was presented and a

Clinical application of autologous fibroblast cell culture in gingival recession treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Gingival recession is defined as soft and hard tissue displacement resulting in root surface exposure. The optimal outcome of gingival recession treatment is complete, predictable and long-lasting root coverage with a significant level of tissue regeneration. Tissue engineering, which applies active regeneration principles, presents the contemporary treatment approach in the restitution and regeneration of lost tissues. The objective of the present study was to evaluate and compare the clinical results of application of an autologous fibroblast cell culture (AFCC) on …

Combined orthodontic - mucogingival treatment of a deep post-orthodontic gingival recession.

In this article, the interdisciplinary management of an isolated-type recession defect in a severely compromised mandibular incisor of a young post-orthodontic patient is described. The prognosis of root coverage surgery was very questionable and unpredictable due to the severe root malposition (III Miller class gingival recession). The treatment plan consisted of: (1) interproximal enamel reduction to gain space within the dental arch, (2) orthodontic repositioning of the root of the affected tooth within the alveolar bone and (3) root coverage mucogingival surgery. Clinical re-evaluation 7 m…

Decision Making in Gingival Recession Treatment: Scientific Evidence and Clinical Experience.

Focused Clinical Question: What are the key considerations for selecting the best surgical approach in mucogingival plastic surgery? Summary: Treatment of gingival recession has become an important therapeutic issue due to the increasing number of cosmetic requests from patients. The dual goals of mucogingival treatment include complete root coverage, up to the cemento-enamel junction, and blending of tissue color between the treated area and non-treated adjacent tissues. Even though the connective tissue graft is commonly considered the "gold standard" for treatment of recession defects, it m…

Orthodontic treatment of localised gingival recession associated with traumatic anterior crossbite.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession can be defined as the apical shift of the marginal gingiva from its normal position on the crown of the tooth to levels on the root surface beyond the cemento-enamel junction. The aetiology of this condition is multifactorial, but can result from a traumatic occlusion. The long-term prognosis of teeth with localised gingival recession can be uncertain. Successful management of these cases may involve either orthodontic or periodontal treatment in isolation or in combination. AIM: To describe two patients in which localised gingival recession associated with ante…
