The association of gingivitis and periodontitis with ischemic stroke.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the associations of different periodontal parameters with cerebral ischemia. METHODS: In a … oss a 3.6 times (1.58-8.28) higher risk of cerebral ischemia than subjects without periodontitis or gingivitis, respectively. CONCLUSION: Periodontitis is an independent risk factor for cerebral ischemia and acute exacerbation of inflammatory processes in the periodontium might be a trigger for the event of cerebral ischemia.

Necrotising ulcerative gingivitis/periodontitis as indicators of HIV-infection.

UNLABELLED: Necrotising ulcerative gingivitis/periodontitis (NUG/NUP) are well-documented oral manifestations of HIV infection/AIDS. However, no information is available regarding the predictive value of NUG in the diagnosis of HIV-infection in South Africa. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine a possible correlation between NUG/NUP and HIV infection in the as yet undiagnosed patients. METHODS: Eighty-six systemically asymptomatic patients were diagnosed with NUG/NUP. All patients were treated with 400 mg of metronidazole and 500 mg paracetamol, three times a day for five d…

Clinical course of chronic periodontitis. I. Role of gingivitis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of long-standing gingival inflammation on periodontal attachment loss. On the basis of repeated examinations, the present report describes the influence of gingival inflammation on the initiation of periodontitis from 16 to 59 years of age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data originated from a 26-year longitudinal study of Norwegian males, who practiced daily oral home care and received state-of-the-art dental care. The initial examination included 565 individuals. Subsequent examinations took place in 1971, 1973, 1975, 1981, 198

Desquamative gingivitis: a sign of mucocutaneous disorders--a review.

Desquamative gingivitis is a clinical term to describe red, painful, glazed and friable gingivae which may be a manifestation of some mucocutaneous conditions such as lichen planus or the vesiculobullous disorders. It is important to be aware of this rare clinical entity so as to distinguish desquamative gingivitis from plaque induced gingivitis which is an extremely common condition, easily recognized and treated daily by the dental practitioner. This article gives an overview of desquamative gingivitis, its presentation, the possible causes, diagnosis and treatment. Early recognition of thes…

Chemotherapeutic inhibition of supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis development.

A 6-month double-blind, controlled clinical study was conducted on 107 healthy adult subjects to determine the efficacy of a mouthrinse used as a supplement to regular oral hygiene measures on supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis. 115 healthy adult patients were recruited for the study. Following screening examinations for minimal entry levels of existing gingivitis and plaque in patients with a minimum of 20 sound natural teeth, extrinsic tooth stain, gingivitis and plaque index scores were recorded. Soft tissues were evaluated. All subjects then received a complete dental prophylaxis, …

[Plaque--gingivitis--periodontitis. (2) Microbiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis].

In a survey, current conceptions regarding the origin of gingivitis and periodontitis, as well as their clinical picture, are described. After the build-up of the bacterial plaque in several phases to form a periodontal pathogenic plaque, following a short, acute stage, a chronic gingivitis soon establishes itself in the neighbouring soft gingival tissue, from which, not inevitably, however, a periodontitis can develop after some years, the osseous parts now also being involved in the periodontal destruction, in which the polymorphonuclear neutrophilic granulocytes appear to have a major share…

[Necrotizing gingivitis in an infant with chronic benign neutrocytopenia].

A necrotizing inflammation in the mucosa of the superior maxilla is described in an infant suffering from benign chronic neutrocytopenia. A connection between primary dentition which occurred at the same time and the basic illness is assumed.

Gingivitis and oral ulceration in patients with neutrophil dysfunction.

In this study, the gingival condition of patients with neutrophil dysfunction has been evaluated. The data demonstrate increased gingival disease as well as oral ulcerations in patients with neutrophil dysfunction syndromes and are consistent with a critical role of neutrophils in oral health.

Ultrastructural study of mechanobullous desquamative gingivitis: a case report.

A 67-year-old female with localized bullous desquamative gingivitis is described. Ultrastructural studies of the perilesional area showed changes similar to those seen in cicatricial pemphigoid and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita.

Gingival Unit Graft Versus Free Gingival Graft for Treatment of Gingival Recession: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Gingival recession can lead to root exposure and discomfort for patients. There are various techniques for root coverage. The aim of this study was to compare the use of gingival unit graft (palatal graft including the marginal gingiva and papillae) with free gingival graft for treatment of localized gingival recession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 18 bilateral localized recessions of Miller class I and II were treated in nine systemically healthy patients. Recessions were randomly treated with gingival unit graft in one side and conventiona

Comparison of the effectiveness of Gingival unit transfer and free Gingival graft in the management of localized Gingival recession - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Gingival Recession (GR) is defined as the displacement of the soft tissue margin apical to the cementoenamel junction which can lead to root exposure and hypersensitivity. Treatment of GR has become an important therapeutic issue due to the increasing number of cosmetic requests from patients. Several techniques exist for the management of GR that include Sub-Epithelial Connective Tissue Graft (SECTG), Pedicle Graft (lateral and coronal), and Free Gingival Graft (FGG) and more. FGG is a non-submerged grafting procedure carried out for the management of recession defects. However, F
