Soil warming increases the active antibiotic resistome in the gut of invasive giant African snails.

BACKGROUND: Global warming is redrawing the map for invasive species, spotlighting the globally harmful giant African snail as a major ecological disruptor and public health threat. Known for harboring extensive antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and human pathogens, it remains uncertain whether global warming exacerbates these associated health risks. METHODS: We use phenotype-based single-cell Raman with D2O labeling (Raman-D2O) and genotype-based metagenomic sequencing to investigate whether soil warming increases active antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs) in the gut microbiome of giant A

Toxocariasis: A neglected infection for the Anthropocene epoch.

While ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infection dominate global efforts to control human soil-transmitted helminth infections, a picture is unfolding to suggest that toxocariasis is now a fourth and perhaps equally important parasitic disease. Toxocara eggs are widespread in the environment and practically ubiquitous in the soils of many subtropical and tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Human zoonotic infection is also highly prevalent in these areas, based on serologic studies to detect anti-Toxocara antibodies. The relevance of these findings to human and animal dise

Intensification of East Asian summer extreme precipitation under a net-zero anthropogenic CO2 emission scenario.

Global warming has intensified extreme precipitation, a trend projected to continue as warming persists. However, how extreme precipitation characteristics respond to global warming mitigation strategies remains poorly understood. This study examines East Asian summer extreme precipitation responses under a net-zero anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emission scenario. Despite substantial cooling over East Asia following atmospheric CO2 concentration decline, the intensity of extreme precipitation events continues to increase for about 30 years and does not subsequently weaken. This counterint

Increased Belowground Carbon Allocation Reduces Soil Carbon Losses Under Long-Term Warming.

The response of the carbon cycle in forests to global warming could lead to a positive climate feedback if warming accelerates the mineralization of soil organic carbon (SOC), thereby causing net emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. In Europe, carbon-rich alpine forest soils could be particularly affected by global warming, as a greater rise in temperature is expected in this region than the global average. Here we show that nearly two decades of experimental soil warming (+4°C during the snow-free seasons) in a mountain forest in the Northern Limestone Alps significantly (~13% per 1°C warmin

Climate Warming Impaired the CO2 Sink Capacity and Efficiency in a Suaeda salsa-Dominated Salt Marsh.

Salt marshes are among the most valuable carbon sinks globally but are highly vulnerable to ongoing climate warming, which profoundly affects ecosystem photosynthesis and respiration and may therefore alter their CO2 sink capacity and efficiency. However, whether climate warming will enhance or reduce the function of salt marshes to act as CO2 sinks remains uncertain. Here, we investigated the interannual variations in salt marsh CO2 sink capacity (net ecosystem exchange, NEE) and efficiency (ecosystem carbon use efficiency, CUE) in response to climate warming, using a long-term eddy covarianc

Diatom-lipid-copepod nexus under threat by global change.

The central role of lipids in the ecology of high-latitude and temperate seas is under threat by global change. This hinges on the tight ecological links between diatoms and copepods of the genus Calanus and similar (e.g. Neocalanus, Calanoides) that produce and accumulate energy-rich lipids. Strongly coupled through seasonal water-column stability, nutrient supply, spring-bloom succession, and overwintering life strategies, this nexus is foundational to the highly productive food webs of these regions. We experimentally tested how a change in phytoplankton type from diatoms to flagellates, al

The rise of polyploids during environmental upheaval.

Polyploidy, or whole-genome duplication (WGD), serves as both a significant evolutionary force and a potential evolutionary dead end, particularly among angiosperms. Despite the prevalence of polyploid organisms, instances of ancient polyploidy are surprisingly rare, presenting a paradox that remains poorly understood. In this study, we constructed a comprehensive genomic dataset of 470 angiosperm species and dated 132 ancient WGD events that are non-randomly distributed, revealing a clustering around pivotal periods of environmental upheaval and extinction. Notably, our findings highlight a s

Glacier changes in the Qilian Mountains over the past 60+ years: Multi-factor quantitative analysis of spatial heterogeneity and driving mechanisms.

Against the backdrop of global climate warming, glaciers in the Qilian Mountains have continued to retreat, yet existing monitoring data suffer from insufficient timeliness, and the analysis of influencing factors on glacier retreat lacks multi-element synergistic consideration. This study, based on data from two Chinese glacier inventories, glacier survey data of the Qilian Mountains in 2024, and long-term gridded temperature and precipitation data, comprehensively employs trend analysis, correlation analysis, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) to systematically examine the spatiote

Rewetting drained boreal peatland forests does not mitigate climate warming in the twenty-first century.

Rewetting drained peatland forests restores pristine ecosystem functions, improves peatland ecological status, and has been considered to mitigate climate change. We quantified climate impact of rewetting boreal peatland forests in Northern Europe by comparing the radiative forcing of alternative restoration pathways to that of continued forestry use. We considered changes in soil carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide balance, tree stand carbon sink-source dynamics, albedo change, and included the wood product carbon storage and release. We show that restoring nutrient-rich drained boreal

Pathways to decarbonization: Assessing the influence of government effectiveness, economic dynamics, and wind and solar energy adoption on CO2 emissions.

To achieve the 1.5 °C global warming limit, leading economies must holistically revisit the interplay between economic dynamics, government effectiveness (GOVE), and the accelerated adoption of wind and solar power for comprehensive sustainable development. This effort is vital for meeting COP28's ambitious targets of a 43 % emission cut and a 300 % renewable energy boost by 2030. In this regard, this research uses some advanced regression methods, such as the method of moments quantile regression (MM-QR), the bootstrapped simultaneous quantile regression (BS-QR), and the Driscoll-Kraay (DK) s

Climate warming is expanding dengue burden in the Americas and Asia.

Climate change is expected to pose significant threats to public health, particularly vector-borne diseases. Despite dramatic recent increases in dengue that many anecdotally connect with climate change, the effect of anthropogenic climate change on dengue remains poorly quantified. To assess this link, we assembled local-level data on dengue across 21 countries in Asia and the Americas. We found a nonlinear relationship between temperature and dengue incidence with the largest impact of warming at lower temperatures, peak incidence at 27.8°C, and a decline at higher temperatures. The trade-offs associated with the adaptions of marine microalgae to high CO2 and warming.

Trade-offs play vital roles in evolutionary theory, linking organism performance to changing environments in the context of global change. Marine microalgae, as one of the most important groups of primary producers in the biosphere, exhibit significant trade-offs across multiple traits in response to environmental changes, such as elevated CO2 (and consequent ocean acidification) and warming. In this review, we synthesize recent findings on the trade-offs associated with both short-term phenotypic acclimation and long-term genotypic adaptation of marine microalgae. Specifically, we discuss dis

A 43-year of human thermal comfort in Central Africa.

In this study, the human thermal stress was quantified across Central Africa (C.A.) using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Although many of the documented studies on the use of UTCI in relation to human health are currently restricted to countries in the northern hemisphere, this contribution constitutes a prerequisite of information for future research in the region. To mitigate the problem of lack of field data in the Central African sub-region, we downloaded UTCI data via the ERA5 reanalysis portal. Based on this data source, we have explored the spatiotemporal characteristics an

Future threat from the past.

Global warming is one of the major challenges facing humanity. The increase in the Earth's temperature and thawing of ancient ice release viable viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms which were trapped for thousands and millions of years. Such microorganisms may belong to novel microbial species, unknown genotypes of present pathogens, already eradicated pathogens, or even known pathogens that gained extremely robust characteristics due to their subjection to long-term stress. These worries drew more attention following the death of a child by ancient anthrax spores in Siberian in

Scrub typhus re-emergence in India: Contributing factors and way forward.

Scrub typhus is a mite borne infectious disease which has re-emerged in India in the 3rd millennium after years of quiescence. In this review, the authors hypothesize the various factors responsible for resurgence of this disease. The main drivers that could have contributed to the upsurge in scrub typhus cases in past two decades are changes in land use land cover (LULC) and urbanisation which are; as a result of the population explosion, causing a strain on sanitation and also increased diversion of forest land for agricultural use. In addition, the availability of better tests, changes in a

Factors affecting population dynamics of leaf beetles in a subarctic region: The interplay between climate warming and pollution decline.

Understanding the mechanisms by which abiotic drivers, such as climate and pollution, influence population dynamics of animals is important for our ability to predict the population trajectories of individual species under different global change scenarios. We monitored four leaf beetle species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) feeding on willows (Salix spp.) in 13 sites along a pollution gradient in subarctic forests of north-western Russia from 1993 to 2014. During a subset of years, we also measured the impacts of natural enemies and host plant quality on the performance of one of these species,

The immunological, environmental, and phylogenetic perpetrators of metastatic leishmaniasis.

Cutaneous leishmaniases have persisted for centuries as chronically disfiguring parasitic infections affecting millions of people across the subtropics. Symptoms range from the more prevalent single, self-healing cutaneous lesion to a persistent, metastatic disease, where ulcerations and granulomatous nodules can affect multiple secondary sites of the skin and delicate facial mucosa, even sometimes diffusing throughout the cutaneous system as a papular rash. The basis for such diverse pathologies is multifactorial, ranging from parasite phylogeny to host immunocompetence and various environmen

Prediction of future disposal of end-of-life refrigerators containing CFC-11.

The objective of this study was to predict the number of refrigerators containing CFC-11 blown isolation foam and the amount of CFC-11 banked in these refrigerators. By using a Weibull-based survival function, the number of CFC-11 containing and still-functioning refrigerators was estimated to be approximately 1.6 million in 2013 in Turkey. In order to determine the amount of CFC-11 in the isolation foam of these refrigerators, polyurethane (PU) foam samples were taken from a refrigerator manufactured in 1993 and the quantity of CFC-11 was analyzed by a GC-MS. It was determined that 113-195 mg

Measurement and prediction of enteric methane emission.

The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the agricultural sector account for about 25.5% of total global anthropogenic emission. While CO(2) receives the most attention as a factor relative to global warming, CH(4), N(2)O and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) also cause significant radiative forcing. With the relative global warming potential of 25 compared with CO(2), CH(4) is one of the most important GHGs. This article reviews the prediction models, estimation methodology and strategies for reducing enteric CH(4) emissions. Emission of CH(4) in ruminants differs among developed and developing count

Special article: general anesthetic gases and the global environment.

General anesthetics are administered to approximately 50 million patients each year in the United States. Anesthetic vapors and gases are also widely used in dentists' offices, veterinary clinics, and laboratories for animal research. All the volatile anesthetics that are currently used are halogenated compounds destructive to the ozone layer. These halogenated anesthetics could have potential significant impact on global warming. The widely used anesthetic gas nitrous oxide is a known greenhouse gas as well as an important ozone-depleting gas. These anesthetic gases and vapors are primarily e
