Fire releases micro- and nanoplastics: Raman imaging on burned disposable gloves.

Raman imaging can effectively characterise microplastics and nanoplastics, which is validated here to capture the items released from the plastic gloves when subjected to a mimicked fire. During the COVID-19 pandemic, large quantities of personal protective equipment (PPE) units have been used, such as the disposable gloves. If discarded and poorly managed, plastics gloves might break down to release secondary contaminants. The breakdown process can be accelerated by burning in a bushfire or at the incineration plants. During the burning process, the functional groups on the surface can be bur

Antiviral Efficacy Testing of a Rechargeable Textile.

INTRODUCTION: In light of the COVID-19 (Coronovirus Disease 2019) pandemic, the use of personal protective equipment has become essential to reduce viral transmission and maintain public health. Viruses, particularly human coronavirus and influenza, pose significant challenges because of their various transmission routes. UMF Corporation's innovation, Micrillon, aims to address these challenges by creating durable, antiviral technology for textiles without harmful chemicals, reducing viral transmission risks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study followed ISO Standard 18184:2019, testing Micrillon

An empirical investigation of firefighting personal protective equipment and burn injuries in Korea.

This study aimed to investigate the current situation of firefighting burn injuries and personal protective equipment (PPE) in Korea using a questionnaire. A questionnaire was constructed and then distributed to fire stations via the Fire & Disaster Headquarters of Korea. Responses from a total of 536 firefighters who were currently responsible for suppressing fire or doing rescue work were analysed (39.2 ± 8.58 y in age, 173.8 ± 5.0 cm in height, 73.4 ± 8.9 kg in body weight). The results showed that 22% of firefighters had experienced burns but of these 93% of were burns of less than 1% of t

Skin protection in the food industry.

In food occupations, like in many other skin risk occupations, the regular use of personal protection equipment, i.e. of skin protection ointments and protective gloves, is recommended as well as regular skin care for the prevention of occupational hand dermatitis. We investigated the uptake and maintenance of different prevention strategies (instructions for skin protection and skin care, prevocational skin hardening with UV light) in food occupations and their efficacy in the primary prevention of vocationally caused hand dermatitis. We could show that the acceptance and regular use of skin

The Effect of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Disinfectants on Skin Health During Covid 19 Pandemia.

BACKGROUND: Based on the available evidence, the COVID-19 virus is transmitted through close contact and droplets, not in the form of airborne transmission (airborne) among humans. People at risk of infection are those who are in close contact with or looking after COVID-19 patients. Preventive and mitigation measures are key in both the healthcare sector and the community. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory to protect healthcare workers from the new coronavirus, but healthcare workers may have skin damage especially associated with long-term use of PPE. OBJECTIVE: The main purp

Post-Occlusion Application of Skin Protective Creams Does Not Affect Occlusion-Induced Barrier Changes: A Randomized Controlled Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Glove occlusion increases skin susceptibility to irritants ('occlusion effect'). Previous experimental data showed that applying protective creams (PCs) before glove occlusion does not prevent this effect and may even aggravate irritant responses. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the application of PCs after glove occlusion modifies the occlusion effect. METHODS: In a randomized, single-blind (participants were blinded) study, 68 healthy volunteers were examined over 10 days. Two commercially available PCs (A, B) and one standardized model cream (C) were applied after occlusion for

Proposal to develop a detailed safety program for general/laser surgical patients infected with AIDS.

Medical health personnel have acquired serious and rarely fatal infections in the operating room from AIDS patients. Yet, there are no officially approved AIDS safety programs designed to protect medical health care personnel in the operating room. A sequential safety program is proposed beginning with the following steps: 1) evaluation and staging of the patient and associated complications; 2) protection of the major surgical and laser instruments; 3) use of an efficient evacuator system to avoid plumes of laser fragments from polluting the operating room environment; 4) protection of the op

The use of 3M porous polymer extraction discs in assessing protective clothing chemical permeation.

The aim of the study was to assess the use of 3M porous polymer extraction discs (3M Empore sorbent filters) for detection of chemical permeation of protective clothing. Analysis of some commonly used solvents on 3M Empore sorbent filters was performed for methanol, acetone, trichloroethylene (TriCE), and toluene by solvent desorption and gas chromatography. All solvents exhibited >98 percent adsorption on the filters at a spiking level of 1.8 microL for each solvent. Solvent recovery for the system was calculated for each solvent, ranging from 72-94 percent (RSD < or = 4.0%) for all solvents

Doxorubicin can penetrate nitrile gloves and induces apoptosis in keratinocytes cell lines.

Doxorubicin (DOXO) is an anthracycline antibiotic which is used in the treatment of human malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma and a number of solid tumors, particularly breast cancer. Anthracyclines have been reported to contaminate chemotherapy workstation surfaces as well as other workplaces surfaces. The occupational exposure to these drugs could occur in hospitals, for nurses involved in anthracyclines preparation and administration, in chemical industries during the commercial formulate syntheses, and in analytical laboratories. Numerous studies investigated cutaneous effects related

Managing Occupational Irritant Contact Dermatitis Using a Two-Step Skincare Regimen Designed to Prevent Skin Damage and Support Skin Recovery.

Occupational irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) affecting the hands is a common and difficult-to-manage condition. Occupations that necessitate contact with harsh chemicals, use of alcohol-based disinfectants, and frequent hand washing elevate the risk of ICD. Management strategies that do not adequately prevent accumulated damage and repair skin, can develop into chronic dermatoses which negatively impact work productivity and quality of life. A 2-step skin-care regimen (Excipial Daily Protection Hand Cream (EP) and Excipial Rapid Repair Hand Cream (ER), Galderma Laboratories, L.P.) has been d

Dermal exposure to dry powder spray paints using PXRF and the method of Dirichlet tesselations.

This paper describes workplace dermal exposure measurements that were carried out by the Health and Safety Laboratory as part of the EU RISKOFDERM project to measure dust contamination. Exposure to dry powder spray paints was measured at five sites on 12 subjects. Twenty-two samples were obtained, of which eight contained triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) and 14 did not. All subjects wore Tyvek whole body oversuits and some wore sampling gloves. These were either analysed in their entirety to extract the TGIC or surface scanned over representative areas using a portable X-ray fluorescence spectr

Occupational skin-protection products--a review.

Skin-protection products are used in the occupational field to protect the skin against hazards from the workplace. They are only to be used for non-toxic, non-cancerogenous and non-sensitizing low-grade irritants such as water, detergents, and cutting fluids and cannot replace other protective measures such as gloves. The recommendation of products mainly focuses on the physico-chemical properties of the irritant and the protective cream. More in vivo studies and intervention studies are needed to prove the efficacy of skin-protection products under real-life conditions.
