Elevated lactate in ethylene glycol poisoning: True or false?

BACKGROUND: There have been an increasing number of reports on false increase of lactate in ethylene glycol poisoning. We recently encountered two cases of ethylene glycol poisoning with very high blood lactate concentrations on ABL blood gas analyzers. METHODS: Patient plasma lactate concentrations were measured on different chemistry instruments in addition to ABL analyzer. Serum ethylene glycol and glycolic acid were also determined. Lactate values were determined from samples spiked with various amounts of glycolic acid. RESULTS: In case 1, all the chemistry instruments produced similar

[Ethylene glycol alkyl ethers--the substances noxious to health].

Ethylene glycol alkyl ethers (EGAE), 2-methoxyethanol, 2-ethoxyethanol, 2-isopropoxyethanol, and 2-butoxyethanol, are widely used in a variety of industrial and household products. They are found in a number of paints, varnishes, engine fuels, hydraulic fluids, and also in many household products, including floor polishes and glass, leather, and upholstery cleaners. Human and animal studies have shown that EGAE can cause adverse reproductive, developmental, and hematological effects through inhalation, dermal absorption, and ingestion. The oxidation of these chemicals to appropriate aldehydes

Passive sampling of glycol ethers and their acetates in indoor air.

This study examined the performances of a thermal desorbable radial diffusive sampler for the weekly measurement of eight glycol ethers in indoor air and described the results of an application of this method carried out as part of HABIT'AIR Nord - Pas de Calais program for the air monitoring of these compounds in sixty homes located in northern France. The target compounds were the four glycol ethers banned from sale to the public in France since the 1990s (i.e. 2-methoxy ethanol, 2-ethoxy ethanol and their acetates) and four other glycol ethers derivatives of which the use have increased con

Propylene glycol toxicity complicating use of barbiturate coma.

INTRODUCTION: Barbiturate coma is a necessary medical therapy in certain instances, such as the treatment of refractory status epilepticus or severe intracranial hypertension, but its use is often wrought with serious complications. Potential complications include hemodynamic instability, respiratory depression, and immunosuppression with frequent nosocomial infections. High doses of barbiturates may also lead to the accumulation of propylene glycol, the vehicle used in the intravenous formulations of both pentobarbital and phenobarbital, thereby yielding another less-recognized complication o

Encephalopathy and peripheral neuropathy following diethylene glycol ingestion.

The authors report a 24-year-old man who developed encephalopathy and rapid quadriplegia following ingestion of a solution containing diethylene glycol (DEG). As quadriparesis evolved, motor response amplitudes were markedly reduced with preserved conduction velocities. Studies during clinical recovery revealed marked motor conduction velocity slowing and prolonged distal latencies. These data indicate that DEG intoxication may cause a primary acute axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy with demyelinating physiology during recovery.

Polyethylene glycol-surfactant for lavage lung injury in rats.

Addition of ionic and nonionic water-soluble polymers to pulmonary surfactants in the presence of inactivating substances prevents surfactant inactivation in vitro and improves lung function in several models of lung injury. However, a recent report found opposite effects when surfactant plus polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used to treat lung injury caused by saline lung lavage. Therefore, we examined the reasons why the polymer effect is less evident in the saline lung lavage lung injury model. We treated rats with lavage lung injury with a commercial lung surfactant extract derived from bovine

Polyethylene glycol-superoxide dismutase, a conjugate in search of exploitation.

Without a doubt PEG-SOD has been the enzyme most studied in PEGylation. One can say that it represents the preferred model to assess chemistries for PEG activation, analytical procedures suitable for conjugate characterization, the influence of PEG size in conjugate removal from circulation and elimination of immunogenicity and antigenicity, and the effect of route of administration. The effect of PEG conjugation was studied in vitro and in vivo models in comparison with the free enzyme and the following conclusions may be drawn: (1) At the blood vessel level, PEG-SOD has been shown to provide

Poly(ethylene glycol): protein-repulsive or albumin-compatible?

In the literature, many papers deal with the behavior of proteins in aqueous media in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecules or poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) segments, physically adsorbed onto, or covalently attached to, macromolecules or to solid surfaces. In particular, it is well known that PEO segments make foreign materials stealthy, i.e. they are much less detected by the immune system either through humoral reactions or, at the cell level, through opsonins. Revisiting the literature led us to challenge the largely accepted opinion that the decreased recognition of PEO segmen

Ethylene glycol ingestion resulting in brainstem and midbrain dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Ethylene glycol toxicity has produced central nervous system abnormalities including coma, cerebral edema, and cranial nerve dysfunction. CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old male developed widespread brainstem and midbrain dysfunction with corresponding cranial computed tomography findings after ingesting ethylene glycol. The computed tomography scan which was obtained 3 days after ethylene glycol ingestion showed low density areas in the basal ganglia, thalami, midbrain, and upper pons. The neurologic findings in our patient reflected dysfunction of all the areas of hypodensity on the c

Propylene glycol dermatitis: re-evaluation of an old problem.

Evaluation of dermatitis associated with propylene glycol application or ingestion remains a challenge. The research dealing with skin reactions to propylene glycol is revisited and new aspects for future research are outlined. Based on literature review and our own observations, we propose classifying skin reactions to propylene glycol into 4 mechanisms: (a) irritant contact dermatitis, (b) allergic contact dermatitis, (c) non-immunologic contact urticaria, and (d) subjective or sensory irritation. This concept allows a partial explanation of effects observed by different authors. Despite att

Ethylene glycol action on neurons and its cholinomimetic effects.

Ethylene glycol (EG) is the most representative of the glycols. It is a compound used as painting and plastic solvent, as antifreeze, and in dyes and synthetic fibers. It may also appear as a wine pollutant. Due to these various uses and conditions, EG can produce intoxication in men and animals. The pathologic effects are due to its metabolism resulting in the formation of oxalic and glycolic acids which are eliminated through the kidney causing renal failure. The toxic effects on the nervous system are not well known. In some circumstances, convulsions may occur. To study the neurotoxic effe

Early clinicopathologic findings in dogs ingesting ethylene glycol.

Fifteen dogs were given 9.5 ml of ethylene glycol/kg of body weight, orally. Physical examination and clinical laboratory findings were evaluated at 1 and 3 hours after ingestion. Three of these dogs were also evaluated at 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after ingestion. At 1 and 3 hours, the dogs were depressed, ataxic, and polydipsic with increased urine output and serum osmolality. Plasma bicarbonate and urine osmolality were decreased. The osmolal and anion gaps were increased at 1 and 3 hours, respectively. Calcium oxalate crystalluria was first observed at 6 hours. Diminished renal excret

Immediate and delayed allergic contact reactions to polyethylene glycol.

The lower molecular weight liquid polyethylene glycols (PEG) varying from 200 to 700 are extensively used as solvent vehicles in topical medicaments. Four patients showed allergic reactions to these liquid polyethylene glycols in topical medications. Two had immediate urticarial reactions to PEG 400. Two other patients had delayed allergic eczematous reactions, one to PEG 200, and one to PEG 300. Cross reactions occurred between PEG 200, 300 and 400, but not between these liquid polyethylenes and the higher molecular weight solid polyethylenes from 1000 to 6000.

Microporous Cyclic Titanium-Oxo Clusters with Labile Surface Ligands.

By using ethylene glycol and monocarboxylic acid as surface ligands, a series of cyclic Ti-oxo clusters (CTOC) with permanent microporosity are successfully synthesized. With a cyclic {Ti32 O16 } backbone made of eight connected Ti4 tetrahedral cages that are arranged in a zigzag fashion, the clusters have a "donut" shape with an inner diameter of 8.3 Å, outer diameter of 26.9 Å and height of 10.4 Å. While both inner and outer walls of the "donut" clusters are modified by double-deprotonated ethylene glycolates, their upper and lower surfaces are bound by carboxylates and mono-deprotonated eth…

Effectiveness of drug-loaded poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic-acid) nanoparticles in the in vitro treatment of breast cancer: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer treatment remains a major challenge to modern medicine and has driven the need for nanotechnology-based strategies to improve drug delivery and overcome chemoresistance. Poly(ethylene glycol) and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PEG-PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) are a type of FDA-approved biodegradable copolymer (lactic + glycolic acids) that degrades into non-toxic metabolites (lactic acid and glycolic acid); it has emerged as a promising drug carrier owing to its biocompatibility, sustained release properties, and ability to enhance the cellular uptake of chemotherapeuti

Analysis of ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) in oral liquid products using gas chromatography in tandem with Orbitrap spectrometer (GC-Orbitrap).

A selective GC-Orbitrap method has been developed for analysing ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) in four different categories of oral liquid products: Western medicines (WM), traditional medicines (TM), health supplements (HS) and Chinese proprietary medicines (CM). These glycols were chemically ionised to their respective deprotonated ions using methane gas in negative mode and analysed by targeted selected ion monitoring (t-SIM), maintaining a mass error window of ±5 ppm. Internal calibration was performed using matrix-assisted standard solutions ranging from 5 to 100 µg/mL,
