Dynamic Analysis of Gray Matter and White Matter Functional Network Connectivity in Individuals with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

Accurately localizing the epileptic zone in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is challenging. Emergent resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) analyses have demonstrated that the epileptic network of TLE likely involves both gray (GM) and white matter (WM). Clustering dynamic functional network connectivities (dFNCs) reveals time-varying dependencies of functional networks (FNs) and may provide additional insight into TLE, as interictal discharges are often transient and spread across FNs. In this study, we analyzed data from 103 participants from the Epilepsy Connectome Project (ECP), includ

Association between gray/white matter contrast and white matter microstructural alterations in medication-naïve obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Intracortical myelin is involved in speeding and synchronizing neural activity of the cerebral cortex and has been found to be disrupted in various psychiatric disorders. However, its role in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has remained unknown. In this study, we investigated the alterations in intracortical myelin and their association with white matter (WM) microstructural abnormalities in OCD. T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted brain images were obtained for 51 medication-naïve patients with OCD and 26 healthy controls (HCs). The grey/white matter contrast (GWC) was calculated from T1-w

Estimates of brain age for gray matter and white matter in younger and older adults: Insights into human intelligence.

Aging entails a multifaceted complex of changes in macro- and micro-structural properties of human brain gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) tissues, as well as in intellectual abilities. To better capture tissue-specific brain aging, we combined volume and distribution properties of diffusivity indices to derive subject-specific age scores for each tissue. We compared age-related variance between younger and older adults for GM and WM age scores, and tested whether tissue-specific age scores could explain different effects of aging on fluid (Gf) and crystalized (Gc) intelligence in younger…

Aspartoacylase gene knockout results in severe vacuolation in the white matter and gray matter of the spinal cord in the mouse.

Canavan disease (CD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the spongy degeneration of the white matter of the brain. Aspartoacylase (ASPA) gene mutation resulting enzyme deficiency is the basic cause of CD. Whether the ASPA defect in CD affects the spinal cord has been investigated using the ASPA gene knockout mouse. Luxol fast blue-hematoxylin and eosin staining in the spinal cord of the knockout mouse showed vacuolation in both white matter and gray matter areas of cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral segments of the spinal cord. However, more vacuoles were seen in the gray matt…

Effects of maternal thiamine deficiency on the lipid composition of rat whole brain, gray matter and white matter.

Studies were made of the effects of maternal thiamine deficiency on rat whole brain, gray matter and white matter lipids. Mothers were fed a high protein diet (controls) or thiamine deficient high protein diet (thiamine deficient, TD) from 14th day of gestation through lactation. An additional group (pair fed control, PFC) was pair fed with the thiamine deficient group. The TD pups started showing symptoms of abnormalities in posture, arched back and hind limb paralysis from 16th day of lactation. Significant deficits were found in body weight and brain weight of TD and PFC pups. But the defic…

Voxel-based meta-analysis of gray matter and white matter changes in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

PURPOSE: Increasing neuroimaging studies have revealed gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) anomalies of several brain regions by voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies on patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3); however, the findings of previous studies on SCA3 patients by VBM studies remain inconsistent. The study aimed to identify consistent findings of gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) changes in SCA3 patients by voxel-wise meta-analysis of whole-brain VBM studies. METHODS: VBM studies comparing GM or WM changes in SCA3 patients and healthy controls (HCs) were retrieved f…

Gray matter subtyping with SuStaIn reveals neuroanatomical patterns in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly heterogeneous, and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have reported both increased and decreased gray matter volume relative to typically developing controls. This variability may obscure distinct neuroanatomical patterns in conventional group-level analyses. It therefore motivates subtyping approaches that can characterize neuroanatomical heterogeneity beyond conventional group-level analyses. We applied Subtype and Stage Inference (SuStaIn) to structural MRI data from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) to identify gray mat…

Altered gray matter volume in major depressive disorder patients with psychomotor retardation.

BACKGROUND: Psychomotor retardation (PMR) is a clinically significant but under-investigated neuropsychiatric manifestation of major depressive disorder (MDD). Its neuroanatomical features remain poorly understood. This study aims to examine differences in gray matter volume (GMV) alterations between MDD patients with and without PMR. METHODS: The study enrolled 107 first-episode, treatment-naïve MDD patients (diagnosed per DSM-IV criteria) and 112 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Participants were divided into two clinical subgroups based on the retardation factor score of the 17-item …

Cerebellar gray matter volume difference in first-episode bipolar and unipolar depression.

BACKGROUND: Early differential diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD) and unipolar depression (UD) remains a major clinical challenge, especially during the initial depressive episode. This study aimed to investigate whether cerebellar gray matter volume could serve as a potential neuroimaging biomarker to distinguish BD from UD at an early stage. METHODS: Structural MRI data were obtained from 42 patients with BD, 48 patients with UD, and 83 matched healthy controls. The cerebellum was parcellated into 28 lobules and 7 functional networks using the SUIT anatomical and Buckner-Yeo functional atla…

Subcortical gray matter aging and attentional control in amateur musicians and nonmusicians.

Aging is associated with declines in attentional control. While most studies have explored the relationship between brain structure and attention at the cortical level, subcortical structures remain largely overlooked. Leisure activities, such as musical practice, are thought to promote brain reorganization and help preserve cognitive function in aging. However, evidence for such effects at the subcortical level remains limited. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the relationship between age, subcortical gray matter, and attentional control in amateur musicians and nonmusicians. A tota…

Regional gray matter thickness correlations of the hearing and deaf feline brains.

The overall function and associated structure of the brain changes dramatically following early-onset hearing loss in a process known as compensatory crossmodal plasticity. As the microscale changes to cerebral morphology driving these adaptations can be reflected macrostructurally in MRI analyses, high interregional correlations in features such as gray matter thickness are potentially indicative of functional relationships. To probe the changes in these associations following deafness using structure alone, perinatally-deafened and hearing control cats were scanned at 7T to obtain high-resol…
