Multifunctional systems must maintain homeostasis. Man is an ideal example of a system that constantly aspires to attain optimal regulation, even under the stress of severe disease. We assume that there are universal, interchangeable (as required) biologically active substances that regulate the system and try to keep it in balance. We propose that one of these substances is vitamin B12. Why vitamin B12? The list of organs and body systems in which vitamin B12 plays a functional role is constantly being added to. Vitamin B12 affects the normal growth of children, the peripheral and central ner

The association between breastfeeding and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is controversial. However, several recent studies have established a link between these two factors, necessitating a need to review this subject to raise public awareness. Current research indicates that breast milk contains a variety of bioactive substances including immunoglobulins, oligosaccharides, insulin, lactoferrin, lysozyme, cytokines, epidermal growth factors, leukocytes, nucleotides, beneficial bacteria and vitamins. Such substances strengthen the breastfeeding infant's immune system, both directly, by increas

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effects of bovine milk and plant-based alternatives on oral microorganisms and multispecies biofilms, in part in interaction with monocytic cells. Test substances (all without added sugar) included bovine milk, plant-based oat drink, plant-based almond drink, and plant-based soy drink. Growth of Streptococcus gordonii, S. mutans (here also with 7.5% sucrose), and Porphyromonas gingivalis with 2.5% and 10% test substances was measured. Sediment of P. gingivalis cultures with 10% test substance at 24 h was assayed for Arg-gingipain activity. Further, two

Previous studies have shown that the growth of MTW9, a hormone-dependent rat mammary tumor, is stimulated by the presence of a mammosomatotropic tumor coimplant (MtTW10) but is inhibited by the administration of dibutyryl cyclic AMP (DBcAMP). This study examines the direct effect of serum taken from MtTW10-bearing WF rats (MtT serum) and of substances that increase cellular levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) on DNA synthesis in organ-cultured MTW9. Explant DNA synthesis was significantly greater in the presence of MtT serum than in either normal female or male rat serum. Preparations of hormones know

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics are usually assumed as secondary metabolites produced during the idiophase of microbial growth, which can kill or inhibit the growth of other microorganisms. Nowadays, indiscriminate use of antibiotics has resulted in resistant microorganisms. Therefore, screening researches on products with antimicrobial activities are necessary.
OBJECTIVES: To find new antibiotics to defend against pathogenic microorganisms resistant to common antibiotics, the bacterium isolated from skin of the frog called Rana ridibunda was studied for its antimicrobial activities.

Spinal cord projections from transected sciatic nerves treated with different neurotrophins were investigated in the adult rat following injections of choleragenoid into the proximal stump of the injured nerve. Transganglionically transported choleragenoid labelled primary afferent fibres in all spinal cord dorsal horn laminae except the outer part of lamina II (II(o)), which is almost devoid of labelling. Transection of the sciatic nerve, however, resulted in intense transganglionic choleragenoid labelling in lamina II(o) and in lamina I. In this study, the sciatic nerve was transected bilate

This study characterizes the dynamic development process of photogranules, explores the role of related substances in their formation, and verifies the resource recovery potential in nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewater. The characteristics of photogranules were observed, and the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of the system was measured. The content of protein and polysaccharide in extracellular polymeric substances was determined over time. Excitation-emission matrix fluorescence was used to analyse the types and changes of substances in the system. Resource recovery as

New psychoactive substances (NPS) are drugs that are not controlled by the United Nations international drug control conventions of 1961 and 1971 but that may pose similar threats to public health. Many of them are traded as "legal" replacements to controlled drugs such as cannabis, heroin, benzodiazepines, cocaine, amphetamines, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Driven by globalization, there has been a large increase in the availability and, subsequently, harms caused by these substances over the last decade in Europe. Chestnut extracts were studied for antimicrobial activity against selected microorganisms, including plant pathogens. Chestnut extract on paper discs was applied to an agar medium to evaluate the inhibition to multiple microorganisms or the extract was added at various concentrations to a culture medium to evaluate the growth of target microorganisms. Chestnut type, tissue of plants (shell, pellicle, and leaf), extraction methods, and physical characteristics were studied to determine antimicrobial activity. Most test microorganisms were inhibited by the extracts at different effective concent

An increase in serum IgE levels has been reported in several thrombotic cardiovascular diseases. Since such diseases are associated with the activation of platelets, we hypothesized that platelets are implicated in a mechanism leading to heightened IgE synthesis. To this end, we performed an in vitro investigation of the effects on IL-4 production caused by several bioactive substances potentially released from platelets. Human blood CD4(+)T cells from blood donors were stimulated with anti-CD3 antibody and costimulatory signals delivered via CD58 and CD80 in the presence or absence of IL-4. O

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous substances that alter the endocrine function of an organism, to result in adverse effects on growth and development, metabolism, and reproductive function. The kidney is one of the most important organs in the urinary system and an accumulation point. Studies have shown that EDCs can cause proteinuria, affect glomeruli and renal tubules, and even lead to diabetes and renal fibrosis in animal and human studies. In this review, we discuss renal accumulation of select EDCs such as dioxins, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenol A

We have studied mRNA levels for a variety of growth factors in biopsy specimens from malignant, benign and normal breast tissue. We found TGFb mRNA in all breast cancers and neoplastic breast tissues but the level of the TGFb mRNA were found to be higher in breast cancer (P = 0.01). TGFa mRNA was detected in a similar proportion of cancers as in neoplastic breast tissues but the TGFa receptor EGFR mRNA was detected in only 55% of breast cancers but in all non-neoplastic breast tissue tested. The presence of EGFR mRNA was inverted related to oestrogen receptor status and coexpression of TGFa an

The purpose of this article is to review the remarkable progress in the field of musculoskeletal system gene therapy. Since the introduction of this concept 15 years much of the preclinical and clinical data have emerged. The original target, rheumatoid arthritis, has been subjected to clinical phase II efficacy protocol, and osteoarthritis gene therapy efficacy is being thoroughly investigated in various animal models. The most promising area of research in this field however, is the tissue repair, because it doesn't require prolonged period of gene expression, local delivery is reasonably si

Hair loss, as it occurs with telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia, provokes anxieties and distress more profound than its objective severity would appear to justify. This reflects the profound symbolic and psychosocial importance of hair. Stress has long been implicated as one of the causal factors involved in hair loss. Recently, in vivo studies in mice have substantiated the long-held popular belief that stress can exert profound hair growth-inhibitory catagen-inducing and hair-damaging pro-inflammatory effects. Insights into the negative impact of stress on hair growth and the integr

Cytokines are polypeptides that bind to membrane receptors and may act in an endocrine, paracrine or autocrine way. Several cytokines and growth factors may be produced by bone cells, stored in the matrix or act on them. Osteoclasts derive from the bone marrow stem cell and, as monocytes, belong to the family of tissue macrophages. Their specific function is bone resorption. Interleukin 1, 6 and 11, transforming growth factor and tumor necrosis factor stimulate osteoclast mediated bone resorption. Interleukin 1 is the most potent bone resorption agent and seems to be identical to osteoclast ac

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is an immune complex (IC) glomerulonephritis (GN) that represents one of the most common forms of primary glomerular disease. Proliferation of mesangial cells and the increase of mesangial matrix are histological hallmarks of mesangioproliferative GN. Increased serum levels of IgA, polymeric IgA, IgA rheumatoid factor, IgA-IC, and spontaneous or pokeweed mitogen-induced production of IgA by peripheral blood mononuclear cells are major humoral immune alterations reported in IgAN. Recently, we focused on the role of cytokines and growth factors in the mediatio

The bladder is a dynamic organ that responds to the stress of outlet obstruction by rapidly increasing in mass and cellular content to compensate for increased urethral resistance. If the outlet obstruction is released prior to decompensation, the hypertrophied bladder will shrink, returning to normal size and cellularity. However, with chronic obstruction the bladder will continue to increase in mass, developing drastic alterations in the amount and composition of the extracellular matrix and, ultimately, losing the ability to function. The extensive tissue remodeling associated with each of
