Treatment of class II furcation involvements in humans with bioresorbable and nonresorbable guided tissue regeneration barriers. A randomized multi-center study.

In this multi-center study 38 patients with contralateral molar Class II furcation defects were treated with GTR therapy using a bioresorbable matrix barrier (test) and a nonresorbable expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) barrier (control). Following flap elevation, scaling, root planing, and removal of granulation tissue, each device was adjusted to cover the furcation defect. The flaps were repositioned and sutured to complete coverage of the barriers. A second surgical procedure was performed at control sites after 4 to 6 weeks to remove the nonresorbable barrier. Before treatment and 1

Does Early Re-Entry Surgery Following Simultaneous Guided Bone Regeneration Compromise the Dimension of Peri-Implant Tissues?

AIM: To investigate whether early re-entry surgery following simultaneous guided bone regeneration (GBR) and implant placement has a negative impact on the outcome of bone regeneration and osseointegration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the edentulous mandible of six mongrel dogs, buccal peri-implant dehiscence defects were surgically created. Bone-level implants were placed with GBR, followed by submerged healing. Two experimental groups were randomly assigned according to the timing of re-entry and healing abutment connection at 2 months (early group) and 4 months (late group) following GBR. Al

Combined therapy of mineral trioxide aggregate and guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of external root resorption and an associated osseous defect.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of external root resorption and associated periodontal defects can be challenging to the most astute clinician. In this case report, a multidisciplinary approach was performed to treat a maxillary central incisor that presented with a sinus tract. An amalgam restoration had been placed approximately 10 years earlier to repair an area of external root resorption. METHODS: A full-thickness mucoperiosteal flap was reflected from teeth #8 to #9. Following degranulation of the area, an amalgam restoration was found on the distal root surface of tooth #8. A 2-wall osseous

Clinical evaluation of the use of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft with guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of molar furcation invasions.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) combined with a barrier material in the treatment of human molar furcation defects (experimental) as compared to the barrier technique alone (control). Fifteen pairs of Class II or III furcation invasion defects comprised the study group. Measurements with calibrated periodontal probes were made to determine soft tissue recession, probing depth, and attachment levels. Defects from each pair were randomly selected to be treated with an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (e-PTFE) and

Immediate placement and provisionalization of maxillary anterior single implant with guided bone regeneration, connective tissue graft, and coronally positioned flap procedures.

Immediate implant placement and provisionalization in the esthetic zone have been documented with success. The benefit of immediate implant placement and provisionalization is the preservation of papillary mucosa. However, in cases with osseous defects presenting on the facial bony plate, immediate implant placement procedures have resulted in facial gingival recession. Subepithelial connective tissue grafts for immediate implant placement and provisionalization procedures have been reported with a good esthetic outcome. Biotype conversion around implants with subepithelial connective tissue g

Ammonium bicarbonate as porogen to make tetracycline-loaded porous bioresorbable membranes for dental guided tissue regeneration: failure due to tetracycline instability.

The goal of this work was to manufacture a bioresorbable porous membrane aimed at both promoting osseous regeneration in oral surgery and delivering an antibiotic drug locally. The selected design consisted of a porous poly (D,L-lactic acid) matrix having a closed smooth face on one side to prevent inner migration of conjunctive and epithelial cells, and the rest of the membrane presenting open porosity to allow in-growth of osseous neotissue. The antibiotic drug was tetracycline because of its large antibacterial spectrum and its osteogenetic activity. Solvent casting/particulate leaching and

Guided tissue regeneration associated with bovine-derived anorganic bone in mandibular class II furcation defects. 6-month results at re-entry.

BACKGROUND: The use of graft materials with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in Class II furcation defects is aimed at improving the outcome of the regenerative technique. In this regard, however, there are a limited number of studies discussing the results obtained when GTR and graft materials are used in the treatment of Class II furcation defects. Furthermore, most studies employ either allogeneic or autogenous materials. The present trial sought to determine whether the use of a bovine-derived anorganic bone (ABB) in conjunction with GTR influenced the outcome of mandibular Class II furcat…
