Metacarpal Bone Plane Examination by Ultrasonography for the Diagnosis of Fetal Forearm and Hand Deformity.

We explored the value of the metacarpal bone plane in screening for serious fetal forearm and hand deformities, excluding simple polydactyly and dactylion deformity, by ultrasonographic examination. Observed the second to fifth metacarpal bone plane of fetuses in 20,139 pregnant women at a gestational age of 16 to 30 weeks in The International Peace Maternity &Child Health Hospital of China Welfare Institute (IPMCH). There was a total 138 cases of fetal forearm and/or hand deformity among the 20,139 pregnant women. Of these, 134 cases were diagnosed, 4 cases were not diagnosed, and 1 case was

Unusual intraocular foreign bodies after an explosion: patient's hand bone fragments.

A 26-year-old Turkish Army soldier underwent full ophthalmoscopic examination after a penetrating ocular injury in the left eye due to the accidental explosion of a detonating fuse during handling. Visual acuity of the left eye was hand motion level. Funduscopy revealed foreign bodies suspended in the vitreous gel and accompanying vitreous haemorrhage. B-scan ultrasonography, CT of the orbits and microscopic examination of the intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) were performed prior to removal of bone fragments and pars plana vitrectomy. The IOFBs were fragments of the patients' bone tissue. Bo

[Rare bone tumour of the hand: capillary haemangioma of the second finger: case report].

Primary vascular tumours of bone are rare. Haemangiomas occur as incidental findings in the skull or in the spine. A solitary haemangioma of the hand skeleton is rare and difficult in radiological and histological differential diagnosis. We report a case of a 23 year-old patient presenting with a capillary hemangioma of the left second finger of few months duration for which he underwent amputation. Postoperative evolution was good and showed no recurrence. We discuss this through observation and a review of the literature including the different clinical, radiological and pathological diagnos

[Use of the induced membrane technique for the treatment of bone defects in the hand or wrist, in emergency].

A prospective study is reported concerning 11 cases of bone defect of the hand and wrist treated by the induced membrane technique. Ten men and one woman with an average age of 49 yrs (17-72) sustained a high-energy trauma with severe mutilation of digit and hand but with intact pulp. Eight cases of open finger fractures with composite loss of substance and three cases of bone and joint infection (thumb, wrist, fifth finger) were included. All cases were treated by the induced membrane technique which consists in stable fixation, flap if necessary, and in filling the bone defect by a cement me

Aneurysmal bone cyst: clinicopathologic features and treatment of ten cases involving the hand.

Ten cases of aneurysmal bone cyst in the hand were identified among 208 such lesions in our institutional files. The patients (six women and four men) had a mean age of 27.3 years. Two patients had open physes. Seven lesions were in the metacarpals. Radiographic examination showed that in all cases the lesion was both expansile and completely lucent. There were no recurrences in the three patients treated by complete excision and bone grafting. Curettage and bone grafting in seven cases was associated with four recurrences. Three of these four local recurrences were treated successfully with c

Single stage lengthening by intercalary bone graft in patients with congenital hand deformities.

The experience with single-stage lengthening by intercalary bone graft in four patients with congenital hand deformities is presented. In all seven lengthenings the gap was bridged by a toe phalanx bone graft. The elongation of the ray ranged from 5-14 mm. Examination of patients followed from one to five years after the treatment showed a good appearance of the lengthened ray. One bone graft assimilation resulted in a pseudoarthrosis and another had osteopenia that resolved spontaneously. All others healed uneventfully. The quality of the skin sensitivity, vascular status and tendon balance i

Association of bone edema with the progression of bone erosions quantified by hand magnetic resonance imaging in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in remission.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of synovitis, bone marrow edema (BME), and tenosynovitis in the progression of erosions quantified by hand magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 1 year in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in remission. METHODS: A total of 56 of 196 patients with early RA in remission at 1 year and with available MRI data at baseline and at 12 months were included. MRI images were assessed according to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring (RAMRIS) system. Persistent remission was defined as 28-joint Disease Activity Score-erythrocyte sedi

Assessment of bone quality by quantitative ultrasound of proximal phalanges of the hand and fracture rate in children and adolescents with bone and mineral disorders.

Bone quality by quantitative ultrasound and fracture rate were assessed in 135 (64 males) children and adolescents aged 3-21 y with bone and mineral disorders such as chronic anticonvulsants or glucocorticoids treatment, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, paucity of intrahepatic bile ducts, autoimmune hepatitis, genetic diseases, idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis, disuse osteoporosis, beta-thalassemia major, survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, liver transplantation, calcium deficiency, and nutritional or X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets. Evaluation of the First Metacarpal Bone Head and Distal Radius Bone Architecture Using Fractal Analysis of Adolescent Hand-Wrist Radiographs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in bone trabecular structure during adolescence using the fractal analysis (FA) method on hand-wrist radiographs (HWRs) and to evaluate the relationship of these changes with pubertal growth stages. HWRs of healthy individuals aged 8-18 years were included (N = 600). Pubertal stages were determined by the Fishman method and divided into 10 groups (early puberty [EP], pre-peak [PRPK], peak [PK], post-peak [PTPK], late puberty [LP]). FA was performed using FIJI (ImageJ) software and the BoneJ plugin on circular regions of interest (ROIs) selec

Longitudinal changes in mandibular bone mineral density compared with hip bone mineral density and quantitative ultrasound at calcaneus and hand phalanges.

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate changes in bone mineral density (BMD) of the mandible (m-BMD) compared with hip BMD and ultrasound parameters of the calcaneus and hand phalanges over 28 months. The study group consisted of 18 post-menopausal edentulous women with no reasons known to affect bone metabolism, such as disease or medication. Each woman had undergone natural menopause. No previous fractures were noted. Measurements were performed at baseline and repeated after 28 months. Bone status was assessed by measuring BMD using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the m

Efficacy and complications of the induced membrane technique for immediate bone reconstruction in complex hand injuries.

PURPOSE: To report the radiological outcomes and complications of the Masquelet induced membrane technique (IMT) for acute bone reconstruction in complex hand injuries. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 22 patients treated primarily by the IMT for bone defect of the phalanx and/or metacarpals bones in 26 injured digits. The median bone defect length was 17 mm (IQR 13-25). Given the severity and variability of the lesions, revision parameters focused on bone healing and postoperative complications. RESULTS: At the median follow-up of nine months (IQR, 6-14 months), bone union was achieved
