A case with a rare localization of mycetoma, on the hand, is described. A 31-year-old male patient developed this condition in 5 months after injury with a rope. Surgical treatment for a phlegmon of the left hand was ineffective. After microscopic and bacteriologic studies the dermatologists have diagnosed a pseudomycotic (actinomycotic) mycetoma of the left hand and lower third of the left arm. Streptomycin, penicillin, and actinolysate therapy essentially improved the course of the process. A review of literature on the etiology, epidemiology, clinical picture and therapy of mycetoma is pres

Drug reactions and systemic diseases often involve the skin. In particular, most drug-induced reactions and many infectious diseases present with dermatologic manifestations localized acrally, that is on distal portions of limbs (hand, foot) and head (ears, nose). A detailed review of all acral dermatologic signs of drug reactions and systemic diseases is beyond the scope of this paper, although some of these disorders will be discussed specifically here.

Tinea infections are caused by dermatophytes and are classified by the involved site. The most common infections in prepubertal children are tinea corporis and tinea capitis, whereas adolescents and adults are more likely to develop tinea cruris, tinea pedis, and tinea unguium (onychomycosis). The clinical diagnosis can be unreliable because tinea infections have many mimics, which can manifest identical lesions. For example, tinea corporis can be confused with eczema, tinea capitis can be confused with alopecia areata, and onychomycosis can be confused with dystrophic toenails from repeated l

Mechanic's hands is a poorly defined clinical finding that has been reported in a variety of rheumatologic diseases. Morphologic descriptions include hyperkeratosis on the sides of the digits that sometimes extends to the distal tips, diffuse palmar scale, and (more recently observed) linear discrete scaly papules in a similar lateral distribution. The association of mechanic's hands with dermatomyositis, although recognized, is still debatable. In this review, most studies have shown that mechanic's hands is commonly associated with dermatomyositis and displays histopathologic findings of int

Circumscribed palmar and plantar hypokeratosis (CPPH) is a recently described skin condition with particular clinical and histopathological findings. The etiopathogeny of CPPH is still unclear, but an abnormal clone of keratinocytes has been postulated as the possible origin. CPPH has been considered an entity with no potential malignant transformation, but recently, it has been recognized in association with signs of actinic keratosis in the same biopsy. CPPH has never been recognized in association with porokeratosis. Although these entities seem to be different, a possible relationship betw

There are three types of hand dermatitis in housewives. The most usual are cured when housework is stopped. Another type is that of housewife contact dermatitis which appears on pre-existing endogenous lesions such as dyshidrosis or nummular eczema. The third form is housewife hand contact dermatitis which appears, or coexists with, localized endogenous lesions of the hands. The last two forms are not cured when housework is stopped. In some cases the three forms may coexist or appear one after another. It is not usual for a person suffering from typical flexural atopic dermatitis to present w

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic palmoplantar hidradenitis is an uncommon neutrophilic dermatosis, occurring in children and young adults. Its pathogenesis is incompletely understood. It is characterized by spontaneous resolution, but it can relapse in 50% of cases. We describe a case of a child with atypical idiopathic hidradenitis remarkable for its impact on his motor development.
OBSERVATION: A 3-year-old boy was admitted to the pediatric unit for etiological assessment of delayed walking. Medullary MRI and TSH were normal. He was referred to a dermatologic consultation for recurrent and painful
