Behavioral health service use post-jail release and reduced risk of return to jail.

This study examined whether behavioral health service use post-jail release was associated with reduced risk of jail reincarceration. The study sample included 20,615 individuals who had behavioral health diagnoses and were released from the Philadelphia County jail. Using administrative records of the county jail and state-, county-, and Medicaid-funded behavioral health service use from 2010 to 2018, we conducted Cox proportional hazard analyses to estimate the association between behavioral health service use post-jail release and the risk of return to jail within 3 years. Nearly 50% of the

From 2000 to 2010, Rwanda implemented comprehensive health sector reforms to strengthen the public health system, with the aim of reducing maternal and newborn deaths in line with Millennium Development Goal 5, among many other improvements in national health. Based on a systematic review of the literature, national policy documents and three Demographic & Health Surveys (2000, 2005 and 2010), this paper describes the reforms and the policies they were based on, and provides data on the extent of Rwanda's progress in expanding the coverage of four key women's health services. Progress took pla

How Does Living in Temporary Accommodation and the COVID-19 Pandemic Impact under 5s' Healthcare Access and Health Outcomes? A Qualitative Study of Key Professionals in a Socially and Ethnically Diverse and Deprived Area of London.

Background: Children < 5 years living in temporary accommodation (U5TA) are vulnerable to poor health outcomes. Few qualitative studies have examined service provider perspectives in family homelessness; none have focused on U5TA with a cross-sector approach. This study explored professionals’ perspectives of the barriers and facilitators, including pandemic-related challenges, experienced by U5TA in accessing healthcare and optimising health outcomes, and their experiences in delivering services. Methods: Sixteen semi-structured online interviews were conducted. Professionals working in Newha

Morbidity burdens attributable to various illnesses and injuries among deployed active and reserve component service members of the U.S. Armed Forces, 2023.

This report updates previous analyses of health care burden distributions among active and reserve component service members of the U.S. Armed Forces in deployed settings. Musculoskeletal disorders in combination with administrative and other health services (ICD-10 "Z" codes) accounted for more than half of all medical encounters in 2023 among service members deployed to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and Africa Command (AFRICOM). Three common injury conditions occurred among male and female service members deployed to U.S. CENTCOM and U.S. AFRICOM: other back problems, arm and shoulder i

Using linked administrative data to determine the prevalence of intellectual disability in adult prison in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Studies of the representation of people with intellectual disability (ID) in custody report widely inconsistent findings that reflect variation in how ID is defined and the methods employed for identification. Using linked administrative data may be of utility in studies of the representation of people with ID in custody. However, this approach requires an understanding of the purpose of and factors influencing identification in disparate administrative datasets. METHODS: This study uses linked administrative data encompassing disability, health and corrections data for the year 2

Prevalence of Mental Health and Addiction Service use Prior to and During Incarceration in Provincial Jails in Ontario, Canada: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with mental illness and addiction are overrepresented in prisons. Few studies have assessed mental health and addiction (MHA)-related service use among individuals experiencing incarceration using health administrative data and most focus on service use after prison release. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of MHA-related service use in the 5 years prior to and during incarceration. METHODS: We used linked correctional and administrative health data for people released from Ontario provincial jails in 2010. MHA-related service use in the 5 yea

"It always needs a higher level of care than what I can provide": Practical, ethical, and administrative tensions arising from the integration of wound care services into syringe service programs in Maryland.

INTRODUCTION: The emergence of xylazine into the U.S. drug supply has increased demand for wound care services among people who inject drugs (PWID). Traditional health care settings have historically been ill-equipped to accommodate the complex needs of PWID and syringe service programs (SSPs) have created wound care services to fill the gap. In doing so, many SSPs are extending the scope of their services beyond health promotion into a quasi-medical space that is largely unregulated. METHODS: We conducted 10 qualitative interviews with staff employed by eight SSP programs across six counties
