The effect of a change in ambient temperature on blood pressure in normotensives.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of ambient temperature on blood pressure (BP). BP measurements were taken in 20 normotensive volunteers who stayed in Greenland for a 6-week period. Measurements of systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP) and heart rate (HR) were taken before (3 sessions), during (7-8 sessions) and after the journey (3 sessions). Each session consisted of five BP measurements in the supine position after at least 5 min rest. All five readings were averaged. Temperature data (mean +/- s.d.), collected from meteorological services, before, during and after Greenland

Orthostatic haemodynamic responses in acute stroke.

Little is known about orthostatic blood pressure regulation in acute stroke. We determined postural haemodynamic responses in 40 patients with acute stroke (mild or moderate severity) and 40 non-stroke control in-patients, at two days ('Day 1') and one week ('Week 1') post-admission. Following a 10-minute supine rest and baseline readings, subjects sat up and blood pressure and heart rate were taken for 5 minutes. The procedure was repeated with subjects moving from supine to the standing posture. Haemodynamic changes from supine data were analysed. On standing up, the control group had a tran

Value of non-invasive continuous blood pressure monitoring in the detection of carotid sinus hypersensitivity.

A patient with recurrent episodes of dizziness and blackouts is described. Detailed cardiac and neurological investigations were normal. Autonomic assessment excluded postural hypotension and confirmed normal sympathetic vasoconstrictor function. Cardiac parasympathetic function in response to deep breathing, hyperventilation and ocular pressure was normal. Left carotid sinus massage only reproducibly lowered blood pressure with minimal change in heart rate. This occurred mainly during head-up tilt. The fall in blood pressure was not affected by the muscarinic blocker atropine, or the peptide

[Effect of glycopyrrolate and atropine on the behavior of heart rate and pH value of gastric juice during microlaryngoscopies].

In a prospective study a total of 51 patients were given either a premedication with atropine (10 micrograms/kg) (n = 17), with glyopyrrolate (5 micrograms/kg) (n = 15) or no anticholinergic premedication (n = 19). In the group of patients premedicated with glycopyrrolate the pH levels of the gastric juice were more often above 2.50 than in the group without anticholinergic premedication (p less than 0.05). During the microlaryngoscopic interventions there was a trend to fewer A-node rhythms or bradycardias in the group premedicated with glycopyrrolate than in the other groups. Reduction of sa

Evaluation of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction according to heart rate turbulence and variability in patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by neurodegeneration or demyelination; the relapsing–remitting phase of MS is characterized by acute exacerbation of disease activity. The most commonly used noninvasive approach to assess autonomic function is the determination of heart rate turbulence (HRT) and heart rate variability (HRV). The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction using HRT and HRV parameters determined via 24-h Holter ECG monitoring in patients with relapsing–remitting MS without known heart disea

Use of umbilical artery base excess: algorithm for the timing of hypoxic injury.

Intrapartum asphyxia is responsible for only a small proportion of cerebral palsy cases, although obstetricians are often held accountable. Umbilical cord pH and blood gas values provide valuable information regarding the status of the infant at birth; base excess determination quantifies the magnitude of metabolic acidosis, the putative risk factor for central neurologic injury. Human and animals studies have confirmed normal values of base excess before labor, and consistent rates of base excess change in relation to the degree of fetal hypoxemia or heart rate patterns. Thus, the combination

A critical evaluation of energy expenditure estimates based on individual O2 consumption/heart rate curves and average daily heart rate.

To test the applicability of indirect estimation of daily energy expenditure from average daily heart rate (HR) and individual O2-intake/heart rate (VO2/HR) regression lines in subjects with metabolic disorders, VO2/HR regression lines were determined on 2 consecutive days in 17 subjects (five healthy, five with obesity, five with untreated thyrotoxicosis, two with anorexia nervosa). Daily energy expenditure was calculated by means of the average 24 h HR. Generally, there was a high correlation coefficient for the relationship between VO2 and HR, but the slopes and intercepts varied considerab

A novel method for the measurement of cardiovascular responses to lower body negative pressure in the awake instrumented rat.

Lower body negative pressure (LBNP) has been used for decades in humans to model arterial baroreceptor unloading and represents a powerful tool for evaluating cardiovascular responses to orthostatic challenges. However, LBNP studies in animals have been limited to conditions of anesthesia or sedation, where cardiovascular reflexes are altered. Given the consequent uncertainties, the usefulness of LBNP studies in these preclinical models has been severely hampered. Here, we developed an approach using a novel system to study LBNP responses in awake rats instrumented for telemetric blood pressur

Efficacy of once-daily urapidil treatment in mild or moderate essential hypertension assessed by ambulatory 24-hour blood pressure monitoring.

The blood pressure-lowering effect and tolerability of urapidil 120 mg once daily versus urapidil 60 mg twice daily was compared in 36 outpatients with newly diagnosed mild to moderate essential hypertension. Patients were enrolled in the study if they showed a favourable response to urapidil 60 mg twice daily at the end of a 2-week run-in as revealed by a first non-invasive 24-hour blood pressure profile. The patients were then randomly allocated to a 6-week double-blind treatment with either urapidil 120 mg once daily or urapidil 60 mg twice daily. Blood pressure, heart rate and adverse reac

[Clinical use of the apex carotid diagram in mitral stenosis].

Apex-carotid diagram (ACD) is a new mechanic-cardiographic method, consisting in integration of carotis-sphygmogram and apex-cardiogram in one diagram. In the present work, 121 patients with mitral stenosis were examined. ACD in mitral stenosis is characterized by an extension of the field of ventricle filling (p less than 0.05) and diminished angle alpha' (p less than 0.001). A reliable correlation was established between the values of angle alpha' and the mean pressure in the left ventricle r = -0.88, p less than 0.001 with a standard deviation of +/- mm Hg.

Motion-Steered Noise Management in Hearing Aids Reduces Listening Effort and Stress Indexed by Pupil Size and Heart Rate.

OBJECTIVES: Head and body movements influence real-world hearing outcomes, yet they are often overlooked in clinical evaluations of hearing aids. This reduces ecological validity and limits assessments of motion-based features. To overcome this, the present study introduces a novel experimental approach that incorporates natural human behavior during listening, utilizing virtual reality (VR) in an anechoic chamber equipped with a spherical 64-channel loudspeaker array and a naturalistic two-stage listening task. We hypothesized that heart rate, obtained unobtrusively with a wrist-worn device,

Effect of arousal on sympathetic overactivity in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with sympathetic overactivity. Intermittent hypoxemia and repetitive arousals are the proposed mechanisms; however, the main contributing factor for sympathetic overactivity remains to be determined. We therefore investigated the independent effect of apnea or arousal on sympathetic activity in a large cohort of OSA patients using heart rate variability analysis. METHODS: Frequency domain heart rate variability parameters were measured and compared between 782 patients with OSA (198 mild, 259 moderate, 325 severe) and 119 non-OSA controls

Improving methodology in heart rate variability analysis for the premature infants: Impact of the time length.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been emerging in neonatal medicine. It may help for the early diagnosis of pathology and estimation of autonomous maturation. There is a lack of standardization and automation in the selection of the sequences to analyze and some features have not been explored in this specific population. The main objective of this study was to analyze the impact of the time length of the sequences on the estimation of linear and non-linear HRV features, including horizontal visibility graphs (HVG). METHODS: HRV features were repeatedly measured with linear and no
