OBJECTIVE: To summarize the experience with the application of robotic technique in totally endoscopic atrial septal defect closure in a single center.
METHODS: Between January 2007 and September 2011, 115 patients with the diagnosis of secundum type atrial septal defects underwent robotic atrial septal defect repair with the assistance of da Vinci surgical system. The patients had a median age of 35 years and a median defect diameter of 28 mm. Cardiopulmonary bypass was established via peripheral cannulation. Via three 8-mm ports and one 15-mm port in the right chest, the surgeon manipulated

Atrial septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart defects. Open-heart repair via midline sternotomy or right thoracotomy and cardiopulmonary bypass has been considered the standard treatment for the closure of atrial septal defects, but transcatheter closure with the Amplatzer septal occluder has recently become a viable option. We have adopted a 3rd alternative: intraoperative device closure with minimal transthoracic invasion. From May 2007 through June 2011, 250 patients with secundum atrial septal defect underwent cardiac surgery at our institution. Open-heart repair with car

Open heart surgery is the standard procedure for closure of ostium secundum atrial septal defects. Recently, percutaneous transcatheter procedures emerged as therapeutic alternatives for closure of both atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale. Unfortunately, however, such percutaneous procedures may require surgical intervention for early or late complications. We report a case with emergent surgery for dislocation of the Amplatzer septal occluder into the aortic arch diagnosed 30 days after percutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect.

The evolution of percutaneous procedures that use transseptal puncture to treat left-sided structural heart disease has led to the emergence of iatrogenic atrial septal defects as a potential complication. These defects can result in hemodynamic decompensation and worsening clinical outcomes. Some iatrogenic atrial septal defects require immediate closure, others do not. This case report presents 2 patients who underwent transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair with transseptal puncture and required iatrogenic atrial septal defect closure (1 immediate and 1 delayed). The goal of this rep

We treated two patients with a rare developmental complex. The persistent left superior vena cava draining into the left atrium (PLSVC into LA) was associated with an absent coronary sinus and an atrial septal defect. Ligation of PLSVC and patch-repair of the atrial septal defect were successfully performed in one stage. The atrial septal defect was located in the upper and posterior aspect of the interatrial septum and appeared to be an unique type of atrial septal defect. In the other patient, additional multiple cardiac defects were associated with this syndrome, including ventricular septa

Two patients with atrial fibrillation associated with an atrial septal defect underwent simultaneous surgical correction of the atrial septal defect and right atrial isolation. The right atrium was surgically isolated while the continuity with the sinoatrial node was preserved in the remainder of the heart. After the operation, the patients maintained normal sinus rhythm for 99 and 65 months. Thus, right atrial isolation offers an alternative to the current surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation associated with an atrial septal defect.

A cytomegalovirus-associated heart failure in a young infant with atrial and ventricular septal defects is reported in this case report. The patient recovered by an anti-congestive and anti-viral therapy with an extra percutaneous transcatheter treatment strategy. In the context of bi-ventricular predominant right heart failure associated with supra-systemic pulmonary hypertension, the already closed arterial duct was re-opened and stented to unload the right ventricle and thereby augment the systemic blood flow. Either the left-to-right shunting atrial septal defect or bi-directional shunting

"Heart-hand" syndrome is a broad category of diseases. The most common form is Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) that occurs in approximately 1:100 000 live births. It is characterized by upper limb defects (carpal bone defects, triphalangeal thumbs, hypoplasia or absence of the thumb and the radial ray) and cardiac septal defects (atrial septal defects or ventricular septal defects). There are three main types of "heart-hand" syndromes. "Heart-hand" syndrome type I--HOS is characterised by atrial septal defect and thumb anomaly, type II (Tabatznik syndrome) by short distal phalanx of the thumb, upper

Secundum atrial septal defect is the most common form of interatrial communication. Atrial septal defects can present in young adults with a variety of clinical presentations, including breathlessness on effort, palpitations, or stroke. Clinical heart failure and resting desaturation are both rarely seen in young patients. We present a case of a young man with a secundum atrial septal defect and a diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis, only made after two attempts at surgical correction of the atrial septal defect, with pericardiectomy at the third attempt and subsequent symptomatic improveme

OBJECTIVES: The goals were to assess the frequency of spontaneous closure of isolated secundum atrial septal defect in children and to identify predictors of spontaneous atrial septal defect closure.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed in a tertiary care pediatric cardiology center. Consecutive patients (n = 200) diagnosed as having isolated atrial septal defects (no multiple or fenestrated atrial septal defects, no additional congenital heart disease, and no syndromes) were monitored for > 6 months with serial 2-dimensional echocardiography, according to a standardized protoc

INTRODUCTION: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common congenital defects and accounts for nearly one-third of all major congenital anomalies. It is the leading causes of birth defect-associated morbidity, mortality, and medical expenditures. Of all CHD types, ventricular septal defect (VSD) and atrial septal defect (ASD) accounted 51% of cases with an increasing trend over time.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to estimate the pooled prevalence of ventricular septal defect and congenital atrial septal defect among congenital heart diseases patients in East African context.

Atrial septal defects may have clinical consequences regardless of their size. We evaluated the incidence of clinically unsuspected atrial septal defects in 4,411 consecutive adult patients referred for cardiac catheterization by the previously validated method of inspired hydrogen appearance time. Oximetry was performed only when an abnormally short inspired hydrogen appearance time was measured. Seventy-five patients (1.7%) were discovered to have a left-to-right shunt by this method. The shunting was at the atrial level in 65 patients. Thirty-five of these patients (0.8% of all catheterizat

UNLABELLED: Median sternotomy has been the conventional approach for correction of atrial septal defect despite poor cosmetic results at times. Right anterior minithoracotomy was, therefore, assessed as an alternative procedure with a better cosmetic outcome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: from April 2008 through February 2017 102 patients underwent correction of atrial septal defect with the use of normothermic perfusion on a beating heart through right anterior minithoracotomy involving a short incision through the fourth intercostals space and the direct cannulation. The 75 were female and 27 male

We are reporting a case of a 37-year-old pregnant woman with a large secundum atrial septal defect with left-to-right shunt and severe pulmonary hypertension. Her atrial septal defect was undiagnosed before this pregnancy. After carefully considering all the options, we repaired her atrial septal defect with an open heart surgical closure at 20 weeks of gestation. A substantial and consistent reduction in pulmonary arterial pressure after the surgery and subsequent uneventful delivery indicate that surgical repair of atrial septal defects is a viable option that should be considered for such p

Background: The vestibular atrial septal defect is an interatrial communication located in the antero-inferior portion of the atrial septum. Reflecting either inadequate muscularization of the vestibular spine and mesenchymal cap during development, or excessive apoptosis within the developing antero-inferior septal component, the vestibular defect represents an infrequently recognized true deficiency of the atrial septum. We reviewed necropsy specimens from three separate archives to establish the frequency of such vestibular defects and their associated cardiac findings, providing additional

INTRODUCTION: Atrial septal defect is commonly considered a minor CHD, but morbidity and mortality are higher compared to the background population. Maternal pre-eclampsia is associated with CHD in the offspring in large registry-based studies. However, the association between pre-eclampsia and atrial septal defects might be subject to detection bias, as many atrial septal defects are asymptomatic or might remain undiagnosed until late in life.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between maternal pre-eclampsia and the risk of atrial septal defects in a population-based cohort of neona

Isolated secundum atrial septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart defects. Surgical closure is the treatment of choice but is associated with a chest scar, some morbidity and a relatively long recovery and the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Transcatheter closure of secundum atrial septal defect is therefore an attractive approach. 3 children, aged 5-10 years, underwent successful transcatheter closure of moderate to large central atrial septal defects with the Cardioseal device. The procedures were performed under x-ray and transesophageal echocardiographic guidance. Our initia

Atrial septal defect is one of the most common CHD. The pathogenesis of atrial septal defect still remains unknown. Cx43 is the most prevalent connexin in the mammalian heart during development. Its genetic variants can cause several CHD. The aim of our study was to investigate the association of genetic variations of the Cx43 with sporadic atrial septal defect. A total of 450 paediatric patients were recruited, including 150 cases with atrial septal defect and 300 healthy controls. The promoter region of Cx43 was analysed by sequencing after polymerase chain reaction. All data were analysed b
