A new MIL-101-type chromium-based metal-organic framework with densely packed sulfonic groups: an ultra-high uptake of toxic Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from an aqueous medium.

Metal-organic frameworks have been demonstrated to be effective adsorbents of heavy metal ions in recent decades. Nevertheless, their practical applications remain limited because of their slow uptake rates and a lack of functionalization techniques. To overcome these drawbacks, a new sulfonic-functionalized chromium-based metal-organic framework with a MIL-101-type structure was successfully fabricated, termed MIL-101-SO3H(N), via a solvothermal procedure, and it demonstrated a unique uptake ability for highly toxic Pb2+ and Cu2+ cations from solution. Accordingly, MIL-101-SO3H(N) demonstrate

Decomplexation of Pb-EDTA by electron beam irradiation technology: efficiency and mechanism.

As a common heavy metal complex in industrial wastewater, Pb-EDTA has garnered much attention due to its detrimental impact on both human health and the ecological environment. The degradation of heavy metal complexes by traditional methods requires subsequent treatment to recover heavy metals. This article attempts to find an effective method to simultaneously degrade both organic matter and heavy metal pollutants. Experimental results indicate that 1 mM Pb-EDTA can be effectively removed at 10 kGy with a degradation efficiency of 91.62%. Most lead ions were still in a stable complex state, w

Simultaneous removal of heavy metals and inorganic nitrogen by using the biofilm of Marichromatium gracile YL28.

Heavy metal and nitrogen contaminations are serious concerns in aquatic environments. Marichromatium gracile YL28, a marine purple sulfur bacterium, has shown great potential as a bioremediation agent for removing inorganic nitrogen from marine water. This study further investigated its ability to simultaneously absorb heavy metals, including Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Cr(VI), and remove inorganic nitrogen. The contributions of photopigment and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the YL28 biofilm to heavy metal adsorption and tolerance were also evaluated. The YL28 biofilm demonstrated

Ellagic Acid from Terminalia arjuna Fruits Protects Against Chromium and Cobalt Toxicity in Primary Human Lymphocytes.

Increased accumulation of heavy metal ions such as Cr6+ and Co2+ due to release from prostheses and metallic implants has been reported. These metal ions have been shown to affect both resting and activated lymphocytes. Natural remedies towards mitigating the cytotoxic effects of metal ions are clearly warranted. Polyphenolic compounds which are part of hydrolysable tannins from natural plant sources are considered effective in cheating heavy metal ions in a biological system. We have isolated and characterized a polyphenolic compound (ellagic acid) from Terminalia arjuna fruits that has been

Enhanced decomplexation of Cu-EDTA and simultaneous removal of Cu(II) by electron beam irradiation accompanied with autocatalytic fenton-like reaction: Synergistic performance and mechanism.

Widely existing heavy metal complexes with high stability and poor biodegradability are intractable to be eliminated by conventional methods. In this study, electron beam (EB) irradiation characterized by rapidly producing strong oxidizing radicals was employed to effectively decompose Cu-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cu-EDTA) with almost complete elimination at 5 kGy. In terms of heavy metal removal, EB irradiation at relatively low doses was insufficient to remove copper ions, which was only 17.2% under 15 kGy. However, with the extra addition of 8 mM H2O2, such an irradiation dose could

[Energy-dependent 63Ni-uptake by Alcaligenes eutrophus strains H1 and H16 (author's transl)].

Kinetic studies of the uptake of 63Ni were undertaken with two strains of Alcaligenes eutrophus, known to require nickel ions for chemolithotrophic growth. Using carbon dioxide as sole carbon source, growth is stimulated by low concentrations of nickel with optimum concentration for growth stimulation at about 0.3 micron nickel. Higher nickel concentrations were inhibitory. Heterotrophic growth on fructose was not stimulated by nickel ions.--Upon transfer into phosphate buffer freed of heavy metal ions, autotrophically grown cells exhibited rapid uptake of 63Ni which was dependent upon the pre

Study on the adsorption behavior of cadmium, copper, and lead ions on the crosslinked polyethylenimine dithiocarbamate material.

In order to obtain a highly efficient solid-state heavy metal ion absorbing material, the crosslinked polyethylenimine dithiocarbamate was prepared via condensation of polyethyleneimine (PEI) with abundant amino groups and glutaraldehyde to form the crosslinked polymer, reduction of the resulting C=N double bonds to a much stable C-N single bonds, and then grafted with carbon disulfide. The material was evaluated in adsorbing cadmium (II), copper (II), and lead (II) ions. The adsorption behavior of cadmium, copper, and lead ions on the absorbent material was studied. Experiment results show th

Selective ion penetration of graphene oxide membranes.

The selective ion penetration and water purification properties of freestanding graphene oxide (GO) membranes are demonstrated. Sodium salts permeated through GO membranes quickly, whereas heavy-metal salts infiltrated much more slowly. Interestingly, copper salts were entirely blocked by GO membranes, and organic contaminants also did not infiltrate. The mechanism of the selective ion-penetration properties of the GO membranes is discussed. The nanocapillaries formed within the membranes were responsible for the permeation of metal ions, whereas the coordination between heavy-metal ions with

One-step removal of free and complexed heavy metals using a biomass-derived amphiphilic network flocculant.

Conventional flocculation technologies are ineffective at removing dissolved heavy metal ions and their stable organic complexes from wastewater, often requiring costly multi-step downstream processes. Herein, a fully biomass-derived amphiphilic network flocculant (BNF) was developed using kraft lignin (hydrophobic segment) and tannic acid (hydrophilic segment) as building blocks, crosslinked by thiosemicarbazide and formaldehyde. This rationally designed network integrates abundant chelating sites and tunable amphiphilicity, enabling efficient capture of both free and complexed heavy metals.

Choroid plexus protects cerebrospinal fluid against toxic metals.

Although heavy metal ions are known to be toxic to the central nervous system (CNS), the mechanisms by which the CNS may protect itself from initial challenges of such toxic ions is unknown. The choroid plexus is the principal site of formation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which bathes the brain. We have determined in rats and rabbits that after intraperitoneal administration of lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic compounds, these toxic metal ions accumulated in the lateral choroid plexus at concentrations of Pb, Hg, and As that were 70-, 95-, and 40-fold higher, respectively, than those f

Adsorption Potential, Speciation Transformation, and Risk Assessment of Hg-, Cd-, and Pb-Contaminated Soils Using Biochar in Combination with Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate.

The objective of this study is to develop a remediation technology for composited heavy metal-contaminated soil. Biochars (BC300, BC400, and BC500) derived from corn were combined with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) to immobilize and remove heavy metal ions, including mercury (Hg2+), cadmium (Cd2+), and lead (Pb2+). The adsorption kinetics of metal ions in aqueous solutions with different concentrations was tested, and the fitting effects of the two models were compared. The findings demonstrate that the joint application of biochar and KH2PO4 could markedly enhance the immobilization

TSG-6 and calcium ions are essential for the coupling of inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor to hyaluronan in human synovial fluid.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of tumor necrosis factor stimulated gene 6 (TSG-6) and metal ions in the coupling of inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor (ITI) to hyaluronan in human synovial fluid. DESIGN: The concentration of ITI heavy chains bound to hyaluronan was determined by a two-step electrophoretic technique. Synovial fluid, TSG-6 depleted synovial fluid and metal chelated synovial fluid were tested for their ability to support the coupling of ITI heavy chains to hyaluronan. RESULTS: When synovial fluid was mixed with an ITI-source (serum or purified ITI), coupling of ITI heavy chains

Removal of Cadmium, Copper, and Lead From Water Using Bio-Sorbent From Treated Olive Mill Solid Residue.

Olive Mill Solid Residue (OMSR) can be utilized as a bio-sorbent in wastewater treatment. Even though several studies on OMSR as a bio-sorbent were carried out, there is still a need to investigate a simple and relatively inexpensive OMSR treatment that increases pollutant removal. In this study; OMSR is used in batch experiments to remove toxic heavy metals from aqueous solutions including Cd2+, Cu2+, and Pb2+ ions. The effect of OMSR treatment (untreated; OMSR-U, treated with n-hexane; OMSR-H, and treated with water; OMSR-W) was investigated by chemical oxygen demand and cation exchange capa

Double-Hemin G-Quadruplex Highly Sensitive Detection of Mercury Ions in Human Serum.

The traditional G-quadruplex/hemin horseradish peroxidase has poor stability and a strong background signal and is not suitable for the detection of heavy metals such as mercury ions. In this work, we used the previous DNA strand for mercury ion detection and optimized it. Hemin is covalently bound to the 5' and 3' ends of the DNA strand. In the covalent binding state of double Hemin, the G-quadruplex has a strong catalytic activity and can catalyze the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide by ABTS. The formation of double chains with the addition of the S2 chain provides a rigid structure for detect

Atrazine immobilization on sludge derived biochar and the interactive influence of coexisting Pb(II) or Cr(VI) ions.

Sludge derived biochars (SDBCs) may have the potential to simultaneously remove heavy metals and organic contaminants in relation to their various active sorption sites for both metal ions and organic compounds. SDBCs have been proven to provide a considerable capacity for immobilizing Pb(II) and Cr(VI) ions in solution, and in this study their ability to sorb atrazine, in addition to their corresponding interactive influences with coexisting metal ions, is extensively investigated. The results indicate that all atrazine adsorption isotherms fit well with the Freundlich equation, and the great

Surface Electrical Potentials of Root Cell Plasma Membranes: Implications for Ion Interactions, Rhizotoxicity, and Uptake.

Many crop plants are exposed to heavy metals and other metals that may intoxicate the crop plants themselves or consumers of the plants. The rhizotoxicity of heavy metals is influenced strongly by the root cell plasma membrane (PM) surface's electrical potential (ψ0). The usually negative ψ0 is created by negatively charged constituents of the PM. Cations in the rooting medium are attracted to the PM surface and anions are repelled. Addition of ameliorating cations (e.g., Ca2+ and Mg2+) to the rooting medium reduces the effectiveness of cationic toxicants (e.g., Cu2+ and Pb2+) and increases th

Function of phytochelatin synthase in catabolism of glutathione-conjugates.

Detoxification of xenobiotic compounds and heavy metals is a pivotal capacity of organisms, in which glutathione (GSH) plays an important role. In plants, electrophilic herbicides are conjugated to the thiol group of GSH, and heavy metal ions form complexes as thiolates with GSH-derived phytochelatins (PCs). In both detoxification processes of plants, phytochelatin synthase (PCS) emerges as a key player. The enzyme is activated by heavy metal ions and catalyzes PC formation from GSH by transferring glutamylcysteinyl residues (gamma-EC) onto GSH. In this study with Arabidopsis, we show that PCS
