The authors reviewed the data acquired in ELISA technique for serological diagnosis of parasitosis. They reviewed the literature on Schistosomisis, Fasciolasis, Cestode infections (hydatidoses and cysticercoses) and nematode infections. They described their adaptation of the technique for detection of antimicrofilaria Loa loa antibodies and concluded that ELISA technique is reliable in the diagnosis of parasitic diseases even in areas where they are endemic.

An epidemiological survey of human faeces collected from open places in native quarters and from volunteers in modern housing areas was conducted so as to ascertain the intestinal helminth infections in Ibadan a town in South Western Nigeria. Out of four hundred and seventy eight stool samples examined between February 1980 and January 1981 in twenty nine localities grouped into 7 zones, Ascaris (Round worm) Trichuris (Whip worm) and hookworm were most prevalent. Ascaris and hookworms were three times as prevalent in native areas as in modern quarters. Two local dispensary records confirmed ma

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) represent two widely prevalent and often overlapping global health problems. Approximately 75% of countries with moderate or severe VAD are coendemic for STH. We reviewed the literature on the complex relationship between STH and VAD. Treatment for STH significantly increases provitamin A (e.g., β-carotene) levels but is associated with minimal increases in preformed vitamin A (retinol). Interpretation of the data is complicated by variations in STH infection intensity and limitations of vitamin A biomarkers. Despite these cha…

Giardiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are parasitic diseases that are among the major health concerns observed in economically disadvantaged populations of developing countries, and have clear social and environmental bases. In Brazil, there is a lack of epidemiologic data concerning these infections in the study area, whose inhabitants have plenty of access to health care services, including good dwelling and adequate sanitary conditions. In this survey we investigated the risk factors for giardiasis and STH in three municipalities with good sanitation, situated in Minas Gerais …

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) infect over 1.5 billion people worldwide, causing serious health issues, especially among women of reproductive age and school-age children. Mass drug administration (MDA) using albendazole or mebendazole is the main method of control. However, high reinfection rates and limited integration with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and routine primary health care programs make the effectiveness of long-term control and elimination challenging.
METHODS: This scoping review aimed to systematically map and summarize cost-effectiveness evidence fo

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of sanitary provision and hygiene practices on intestinal helminth burden of primary school children.
MATER … ichuria, 5(1.4%); S. stercoralis, 1(0.4%). Regular hand washing with soap reduced the prevalence of helminthiasis.
CONCLUSION: The level of sanitation observed in the schools studied was low. Consequently, more toilets, preferably the VIP type should be built to overcome the hazard of the pit latrine. Provision of portable water supply should be mandatory for …

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) remains an important public health challenge in endemic settings, and mathematical transmission models are widely used to evaluate STH transmission and control strategies. However, no systematic review has comprehensively classified STH transmission models according to their biological and structural characteristics and intervention designs while examining the operational incorporation of World Health Organization (WHO) roadmap targets and projected timelines. This review therefore aimed to classify STH transmission models and interventions and …

INTRODUCTION: Mali was endemic for soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH), mainly hookworms in the southern regions. Following baseline mapping, mass drug administration (MDA) for STH was integrated with MDA for schistosomiasis for school-aged children (SAC) or lymphatic filariasis (LF) for populations aged five and older and vitamin A supplementation for preschool children. Epidemiological evaluations were conducted to assess progress towards eliminating STH as a public health problem.
METHODS: Cross-sectional studies were conducted in schools in 2004-2005 at baseline and in 2014-2019 for inte…

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are endemic in more than half of the world's countries. The World Health Organization has advocated targeted preventive chemotherapy (PC) to control STH infections by distributing albendazole or mebendazole to at-risk populations. While the overall impact and sustainability of this strategy is disputed, a decrease in moderate and heavy STH infections can be largely attributed to a scale-up of drug distribution. Two factors might jeopardise the success of PC programs. First, the benzimidazoles possess unsatisfactory efficacy against Trichuris trichiura infectio
