Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) feeding alters carbohydrate-redox homeostasis of rice plants grown under elevated CO2.

The rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration due to global climate change may affect both plants and herbivorous insects. In this study, we explored the interactions between the feeding behavior of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål, 1854) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) and rice plant responses-specifically photosynthesis, non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), and oxidative stress under elevated CO2 (eCO2) conditions. The results showed that without N. lugens infestation, eCO2 enhanced rice plants' photosynthesis parameters and promoted NSCs accumulation and metabolism, while suppressing oxidative

Environmental Acquisition of Gut Symbiotic Bacteria in the Saw-Toothed Stinkbug, Megymenum gracilicorne (Hemiptera: Pentatomoidea: Dinidoridae).

Many plant-sucking stinkbugs possess a specialized symbiotic organ with numerous crypts in a posterior region of the midgut. In stinkbugs of the superfamily Pentatomoidea, specific γ-proteobacteria are hosted in the crypt cavities, which are vertically transmitted through host generations and essential for normal growth and survival of the host insects. Here we report the discovery of an exceptional gut symbiotic association in the saw-toothed stinkbug, Megymenum gracilicorne (Hemiptera: Pentatomoidea: Dinidoridae), in which specific γ-proteobacterial symbionts are not transmitted vertically b

Host Range Specificity of Scymnus camptodromus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), A Predator of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Hemiptera: Adelgidae).

Scymnus (Neopullus) camptodromus Yu and Liu (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was brought to the United States from China as a potential biological control agent for hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand) (Hemiptera: Adelgidae). Scymnus camptodromus phenology is closely synchronized with that of A. tsugae and has several characteristics of a promising biological control agent. As a prerequisite to field release, S. camptodromus was evaluated for potential nontarget impacts. In host range studies, the predator was given the choice of sympatric adelgid and nonadelgid prey items. Nontarget test

Methyl salicylate attracts natural enemies and reduces populations of soybean aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in soybean agroecosystems.

Methyl salicylate, an herbivore-induced plant volatile, has been shown to attract natural enemies and affect herbivore behavior. In this study, methyl salicylate was examined for its attractiveness to natural enemies of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and for its direct effects on soybean aphid population growth rates. Methyl salicylate lures were deployed in plots within organic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] fields. Sticky card traps adjacent to and 1.5 m from the lure measured the relative abundance of natural enemies, and soybean aphid populations were

Biology and biotype determination of greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Hemiptera: Aphididae), on seashore paspalum turfgrass (Paspalum vaginatum).

Greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), was first discovered damaging seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swartz) turfgrass in November 2003 at Belle Glade, FL. Inquiries to several golf courses with seashore paspalum turf across southern Florida indicated infestation was wide spread by April 2004. Damage symptoms progress from water soaked lesions surrounding feeding sites within 24 h to chlorosis and necrosis of leaf tips within 96 h. Problems caused by greenbug feeding were initially misdiagnosed as fertilizer, disease, other insects, or water management problems b

Evaluating Oryza sativa (Poales: Poaceae) as a host for Diuraphis noxia (Hemiptera: Aphididae): implications for pest management.

Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia, Mordvilko ex Kurdjumov) (RWA) is a major pest of wheat and barley. Although rice (Oryza sativa L.) is not considered a primary host, RWA has been found on drill-sown rice in Australia prior to the application of permanent water. This study investigates the persistence of RWA on rice and evaluates plant responses to infestation, with the aim of determining whether pest management interventions are justified in Australian rice-growing systems. A series of replicated glasshouse trials was conducted using single and repeated aphid infestation pressures. Result

The secondary symbiont Arsenophonus improves thermal tolerance of Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) exposed to extreme heat stress.

Bacterial endosymbionts are ubiquitous in insects and play a critical role in host ecology, including adaptability to thermal extremes. The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a major agricultural pest in China that harbours diverse microbial symbionts. However, the contribution of Arsenophonus, a key secondary symbiont in A. gossypii, to the host's thermal tolerance remains poorly understood. In this study, we used antibiotics to eliminate Arsenophonus from A. gossypii and evaluated the effects on host thermal tolerance by comparing the life-history traits of an Ars

Psyllaephagus brachiatus and Psyllaephagus sp. HH (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) in infestations of Glycaspis brimblecombei (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) in Brazil.

Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae), a pest of Australian origin, has spread to many countries where it damages plants of the Eucalyptus genus. The parasitoid Psyllaephagus bliteus Riek (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is the most widely employed biological control strategy to manage this pest. The identification of Psyllaephagus species present in Brazil is essential, as they may compromise the effectiveness of the biological control of G. brimblecombei. The objective of this study was to report species of Psyllaephagus (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) in infestations of G. brimblecombei

Modeling seasonal aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) dispersal into Idaho seed potato fields to inform potato virus Y management.

Potato virus Y (PVY) is an aphid-transmitted pathogen that severely limits global potato production, especially in seed potato systems. Understanding the phenology and relative abundance of different aphid vector species should clarify seasonal PVY risk and allow optimization of timing of appropriate management tactics. This study aimed to characterize seasonal patterns of alate aphid activity in Idaho seed potato fields. Data were collected over 5 yr (2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021) using bucket traps to monitor alate aphid movement. Generalized additive mixed models were used to analyze th

The Aphis fabae (Hemiptera: Aphididae)-faba bean combination improves mass rearing efficiency of Binodoxys communis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Binodoxys communis (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an aphid parasitoid capable of developing in a wide range of pest aphids. Currently, laboratory rearing of B. communis in China mainly depends on the cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae)-cotton system. Although technically reliable, this method entails high labor demands, extensive space requirements, and overall elevated costs. To identify a more efficient aphid-plant combination for mass rearing of B. communis, we evaluated this parasitoid's developmental performance, population growth, and rearing cost-effectivenes

Survival of elongate hemlock scale (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) with prolonged cold exposure: overwintering mortality risk across North America.

Elongate hemlock scale, Fiorinia externa Ferris (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), is an invasive pest of eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis, and other Pinaceae such as Fraser fir, Abies fraseri. Cut Fraser firs (ie for Christmas trees and other holiday greenery) with F. externa have been intercepted in US states beyond where the insect is known to be established and, in some cases, where exposure to freezing temperatures might be prolonged. This study measures the effect of constant low temperatures (3, -10, or -20 °C) on survival of overwintering F. externa females from eastern hemlock in Michigan and

Host plant preference of Lygus hesperus (Hemiptera: Miridae) in 4 field crops: potato, alfalfa, carrot, and pea.

The western tarnished plant bug, Lygus hesperus (Knight), has emerged as a pest of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in the Lower Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington. This species is generally found infesting several other field-grown crops in the region; however, their host preference is poorly understood. Thus, greenhouse cage experiments were conducted to evaluate L. hesperus host preference by simultaneously presenting adults with 4 host plants: potato, alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., carrot, Daucus carota L., and pea, Pisum sativum L. In addition, an oviposition test was conducted. The res

Identification and Validation of Reference Genes for Expression Analysis Using qRT-PCR in Cimex hemipterus (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

The tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (F.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) is an important public-health pest that feeds on the blood of humans and some other animals. To explore the function of the target genes of C. hemipterus, it is essential to select suitable reference genes for the accurate quantification of gene expression. Here, we selected 10 frequently used reference genes in insects and evaluated their stability in C. hemipterus under various biotic (developmental stage, sex, and tissue) and abiotic (gas stimulation and temperature) conditions through RefFinder (which integrates four comput

Trends in evolution of the Triatomini tribe (Hemiptera, Triatominae): reproductive incompatibility between four species of geniculatus clade.

BACKGROUND: The geniculatus clade, composed by the rufotuberculatus, lignarius, geniculatus and megistus groups, relates evolutionarily the species of the genus Panstrongylus and Nesotriatoma. Several studies have shown that triatomine hybrids can play an important role in the transmission of Chagas disease. Natural hybrids between species of the geniculatus clade have never been reported to our knowledge. Thus, carrying out experimental crosses between species of the geniculatus clade can help to elucidate the taxonomic issues as well as contribute to the epidemiological knowledge of this gro

Salicylic Acid Induced Resistance in Drought-Stressed Pistachio Seedlings Influences Physiological Performance of Agonoscena pistaciae (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae).

Induced host plant resistance is a potential approach to insect and disease management. Salicylic acid (SA) acts as a signal molecule to induce resistance in plants against sap-sucking insects. The effects of salicylic acid-induced resistance against common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae Burckhardt and Lauterer, were investigated in well-watered and drought-stressed pistachio, Pistacia vera L. cv. Akbari, seedlings. Agonoscena pistaciae exhibited a significant preference for plants treated with SA as compared with untreated controls or those subjected to drought stress. Plants subjecte

High chromosomal mobility of rDNA clusters in holocentric chromosomes of Triatominae, vectors of Chagas disease (Hemiptera-Reduviidae).

The subfamily Triatominae (Hemiptera-Reduviidae) includes more than 150 blood-sucking species, potential vectors of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. A distinctive cytogenetic characteristic of this group is the presence of extremely stable chromosome numbers. Unexpectedly, the analyses of the chromosomal location of ribosomal gene clusters and other repetitive sequences place Triatominae as a significantly diverse hemipteran subfamily. Here, we advance the understanding of Triatominae chromosomal evolution through the analysis of the 45S rDNA cluster chromoso

Soybean Host Plant Resistance to Megacopta cribraria (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) and the Potential Role of Leaf Trichome Density.

Megacopta cribraria (F.) (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) is an invasive pest of soybean that has spread across the southeastern United States since its initial discovery in 2009 in Georgia. Previous studies in the southeastern states have documented both the population dynamics of this pest and host plant resistance (HPR) among soybean varieties, although the specific mechanisms of HPR remain unknown. The objectives of this study were, therefore, to 1) quantify field resistance to M. cribraria in multiple soybean varieties in two states previously affected by severe M. cribraria infestations, North C

Seasonal Reproductive Performance and Pre-diapausing Mating Status of Female Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae) Collected in Fields.

Two unexplained phenomena are found in Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae): the first is that it tends to enter reproductive diapause much earlier in the season and to occur on host plants until late fall before finding hibernation site. The second is that they emerge in early spring when primary food sources such as leguminous plants are unavailable. To understand these phenological trends, the reproductive seasonality of both field-collected and laboratory-reared R. pedestris were compared under conditions of with/without food or access to mates. Females collected in spring

Life history of two abundant populations of Dipetalogaster maximus (Uhler, 1894) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in northwestern Mexico.

We focused on the analysis of biological parameters of two different abundant populations of Dipetalogaster maximus (Uhler) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) from northwestern Mexico. The biological parameters were related to hatching of eggs, life cycle, and meal needed for molting by each instar of two populations from environmentally similar areas (El Fandango and San Dionisio) with a similar number of available hosts as blood meal sources. The D. maximus populations from the two locations were evaluated and compared. No significant differences (P>0.05) were recorded for the average hatc
