BACKGROUND: A large proportion of patients with anorectal complaints are referred to colorectal surgeons with the label of hemorrhoids.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review presenting symptoms and frequency of accurate diagnosis, as well as to analyze determinants of misdiagnosis to guide educational endeavors.
DESIGN: This was a retrospective study.

This study was undertaken to determine the outcome of surgery for symptomatic hemorrhoids and anal fissures in patients with known Crohn's disease. Seventeen patients underwent surgery for symptomatic hemorrhoids. Fifteen of these 17 patients' wounds healed without complication. Twenty-five patients underwent 27 operations for anal fissures. We report the incidence of anorectal symptoms in a retrospective study of 189 children treated by injection sclerotherapy for esophageal varices secondary to portal hypertension. For the treatment of not too large hemorrhoid nodes and confluent hemorrhoids the aspiration ligation is quite sufficient.
