Multifunctional silver nanoparticles-loaded rutin functionalised sodium alginate beads: catalysis, corrosion resistance, bactericidal and anti-oxidant studies.

In recent years, the development of sustainable heterogeneous catalysts has posed a significant challenge. To tackle this, a biocompatible three-dimensional nanostructure was designed with excellent recyclability by functionalizing alginate beads with rutin and decorating them with silver nanoparticles. Various characterizations like FE-SEM, HR-TEM, XRD, FTIR, UV-Visible spectroscopy were performed to confirm the structural integrity. The beads were utilized for catalytic reduction of nitroaromatic compounds with %conversion of 4-Nitrophenol to 4-amino phenol 99.97% and more than 98% for other

Viscoelastic recovery time of chondrocytes from monolayer and alginate cultures.

This study uses a 3D-printed variable-height flow cellto investigate the viscoelastic properties of in vitro cultured chondrocytes that have synthesized an endogenous neomatrix surrounding the cells. It was hypothesized that chondrocytes could be distinguished by phenotype associated with their culture environment using viscoelastic recovery time, owing to variation in the pericellular matrix (PCM) produced by chondrocytes from different culture methods. The chondrocyte plasma membrane was imaged with confocal microscopy during applied deformation and subsequent recovery. The projected cell ar

Hydroxylamine promoted degradation of organic contaminants using peroxydisulfate activated by Fe-alginate.

To overcome the shortcomings of Fe(Ⅱ)/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system including the limited working pH range and large iron sludge production, a Fe-doped alginate (Fe-Alg) catalyst was prepared and combined with hydroxylamine (HA) to continuously activate PDS for the removal of organic pollutants in neutral condition. Due to the strong reductive capability of HA, it could significantly enhance the catalytic capability of Fe-Alg for PDS. The results of characterization suggested that Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ) was evenly distributed in Alg through its complexation with carboxyl groups, and the reduction of Fe(Ⅲ)

Blueberry Residue Encapsulation by Ionotropic Gelation.

In the processing of fruits such as blueberry (Vaccinium sp), that has high levels of phenolic acid, the food industry produces tons of organic waste that causes harm to the environment. Encapsulation is a technique used to take advantage of these wastes. Several methods are used to encapsulate substances, among them ionotropic gelation proves to be a simple, precise, efficient and economical method for obtaining particles with encapsulated bioactives. In this manner, the aim of this study was to test sodium alginate as wall material to encapsulate blueberry residue by ionotropic gelation. The

Synthesis and antimicrobial properties of Zn-mineralized alginate nanocomposites.

New bioactive and antimicrobial biomaterials were produced by alginate-mediated biomineralization with Zn-mineral phase. The synthesis procedure is simple, cost-effective and resulted in two different Zn-mineralized alginate nanocomposites, Zn-carbonate/Zn-alginate and Zn-phosphate/Zn-alginate. The presence of Zn-mineral phase and its type, have significantly affected nanocomposite morphology, stability, total metallic loading and potential to release Zn(II) in physiological environment. Antimicrobial experiments showed that both types of Zn-mineralized nanocomposites exhibit strong antimicrob

Potential of biogenic hydrogen production for hydrogen driven remediation strategies in marine environments.

Fermentative production of bio-hydrogen (bio-H2) from organic residues has emerged as a promising alternative for providing the required electron source for hydrogen driven remediation strategies. Unlike the widely used production of H2 by bacteria in fresh water systems, few reports are available regarding the generation of biogenic H2 and optimisation processes in marine systems. The present research aims to optimise the capability of an indigenous marine bacterium for the production of bio-H2 in marine environments and subsequently develop this process for hydrogen driven remediation strate

Analysis of structural variability in pharmaceutical excipients using solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Polysaccharide-based excipients comprise the majority of most solid dosage forms and can vary dramatically in terms of structural and functionally related properties. Analytical methods for characterizing these important formulation components are crucial. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy (SSNMR) can provide a wealth of information on these materials while offering the advantages of non-destructive sample preparation and selectivity. The overall objective of this work is to identify SSNMR parameters that can be used to detect differences among these excipients. Excipients were obtained from a wide

Biological evaluation of calcium alginate microspheres as a vehicle for the localized delivery of a therapeutic enzyme.

Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by the decreased activity and/or stability of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GCR). The available treatment consists in the intravenous administration of exogenous GCR, and is effective in reverting most of the symptoms. However, in terms of bone pathology, which is among the most disabling manifestations, a slow and incomplete response is observed, indicating that adjuvant therapies are necessary to consistently restore GCR activity in bone and accelerate regeneration. In this study, calcium alginate microspheres were analyzed as a vehicle for localized

Development of active bioplastic films from sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol-polyethylene glycol copolymer incorporating syringic acid for postharvest mushroom preservation.

The development of biodegradable active bioplastic films has gained tremendous attention as a sustainable alternative to plastic based packaging. In this study, active bioplastic films were developed using sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol-polyethylene glycol (PVA-PEG) copolymer, incorporating syringic acid (SG) for mushroom preservation. The films were prepared via solvent casting, and the addition of SG (0.25% w/v) significantly (p < 0.05) improved tensile strength and surface hydrophobicity. The scanning electron microscopy and 3D profilometry of the finalized film revealed uniform

Hydrophilic drug encapsulation in shell-core microcarriers by two stage polyelectrolyte complexation method.

In this study a protocol exploiting the combination of the ultrasonic atomization and the complexation between polyelectrolytes was developed to efficiently encapsulate a hydrophilic chemotherapeutic agent essentially used in the treatment of colon cancer, 5-fluorouracil, in enteric shell-core alginate-based microcarriers. The atomization assisted by ultrasound allowed to obtain small droplets by supplying low energy and avoiding drug degradation. In particular microcarriers were produced in a home-made apparatus where both the core (composed of alginate, drug, and Pluronic F127) and shell (co

Cell-derived lactate triggers local hydrogelation and phenotype remodelling.

Many tumours release lactate as a major metabolic product and signalling molecule. Here we use lactate flux as an endogenous trigger for covalent hydrogel formation. Phenol-functionalised alginate remains soluble until cell-derived lactate is oxidised by lactate oxidase; the generated hydrogen peroxide is used by horseradish peroxidase to crosslink phenols and form a matrix at metabolically active sites. Hydrogels form within minutes and reach storage moduli from approximately 10 Pa to 5 kPa. In tumour-spheroid models, including a patient-derived glioblastoma spheroid model, local lactate prod

Natural polysaccharide-based molecularly imprinted polymers as sorbents for selective removal of amino acids as a potential approach for management of aminoacidopathies: Template and monomer selection study.

Phenylketonuria and histidinemia are metabolic conditions characterized by the buildup of certain amino acids resulting from enzymatic deficiencies. Approaches that diminish the intestinal uptake of these amino acids may assist in regulating their systemic concentrations. Molecularly imprinted polymers provide specialized recognition sites that facilitate the precise binding of particular molecules. Natural polymers like chitosan and alginate offer biocompatible frameworks that could improve the efficacy of these systems. Four molecularly imprinted polymers were created utilizing l-phenylalani

Cell adhesion behavior in 3D hydrogel scaffolds functionalized with D- or L-aminoacids.

Alginate hydrogels functionalized with D-, or L-penicillamine (D-, L-PEN-Alg) are used as new 3D scaffolds for cell adhesion studies. The cells recognize and show different adhesion properties in the respective 3D hydrogel scaffolds. C-6-glioma and endothelial cells show higher affinity to the D-PEN than to the L-PEN functionalized 3D alginate hydrogel scaffold. The cultivated cells are harvested from the hydrogel and are reused, for example, for cell growth experiments on 2D surfaces to prove their viability as well.
