BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with increased complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for AKI after THA and TKA and evaluate if preoperative use of antihypertensive drugs is a risk factor for AKI.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 7406 primary TKAs and THAs (4532 hips and 2874 knees) from 2013 to 2019 was performed. The following preoperative variables were obtained from medical records: medications, chemistry 7 panel, Elixhauser comorbidities, and demographic factors.

OBJECTIVES: Main Purpose: To clarify the incidence and predictors of acute kidney injury (AKI) after hip fracture surgery; Secondary Purpose: To investigate the impact of AKI on the length of stay (LOS) and mortality of patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated data from 644 hip fracture patients at Peking University First Hospital from 2015 to 2021, and divided the patients into AKI and Non-AKI groups according to whether AKI occurred after surgery. Logistic regression was used to clarify the risk factors for AKI, draw ROC curves, and analyze the odds ratio (OR) for LOS and death at 30

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare and rank gluteal muscle forces in eight hip-focused exercises performed with and without external resistance and describe the underlying fiber lengths, velocities, and muscle activations.
METHODS: Motion capture, ground reaction forces, and electromyography (EMG) were used as input to an EMG-informed neuromusculoskeletal model to estimate gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus muscle forces. Participants were 14 female footballers (18-32 yr old) with at least 3 months of lower limb strength training experience. Each participant performed eight hip-focused ex

PURPOSE: The aim of this review is to assess the current evidence regarding the impact of relaxin on incidence of soft tissue hip injuries in women.
METHODS: A trained research librarian assisted with searches of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus, with a preset English language filter. The review was completed per the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Manual for Evidence Synthesis methodology. Included studies required assessment of relaxin effects on musculoskeletal health, pelvic girdle stability, or hip joint structures in human subjects. Letters, texts, and opinion papers were excluded.…

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification of large joints, such as knees and hips, has been reported after spinal cord injury, possibly leading to decreased activity of daily living due to a limited range of motion of the affected joint. Therefore, heterotopic ossification resection is performed to improve the range of motion, but it might cause massive bleeding as a complication.
METHODS: In this case, the patient had a history of spinal cord injury and developed heterotopic ossification after the left hip injury. He had left hip ankylosis and could not transfer to a wheelchair by himself; theref

CASE: A 36-year-old bicyclist sustained an open anterior hip dislocation through the scrotum after being struck by 2 motor vehicles. There was no osseous injury present. The hip was irreducible by closed means and required open reduction via a Smith-Petersen approach. Postoperatively, the patient did not develop osteonecrosis of the femoral head but did have signs of mild osteoarthritis and heterotopic ossification.
CONCLUSION: Open anterior hip dislocation into the scrotum is an exceedingly rare injury. Closed reduction can be attempted, but open intervention is often required. A Smith-Peter

PURPOSE: The primary purpose was to compare ipsilateral hip internal rotation (IR) in male and female athletes with or without an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. A secondary purpose was to compare radiographic markers of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) in patients with or without an ACL tear.
METHODS: In this prospective case-control study, based on a power analysis, a convenience sample of 25 ACL-injured and 25 control patients matched by age and gender were examined over 14 months. The ACL injury group included preoperative patients 12-40 years old with an ACL rupture within the p

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare, acute, inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy with a presentation of progressive ascending motor weakness of the extremities, which may extend to the respiratory muscles and require mechanical support.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This case describes a healthy male who developed GBS 1 week following otherwise an uncomplicated bilateral total hip arthroplasty surgery. The diagnosis was made based on physical exam significant for bilateral lower extremity weakness and diffuse arreflexia, and confirmed by nerve conduction studies. There were no effect

BACKGROUND: Most anterior cruciate ligament research is limited to variables at the knee joint and is performed in the laboratory setting, often with subjects postinjury. There is a paucity of information on the position of the hip and ankle during noncontact anterior cruciate ligament injury.
HYPOTHESIS: When landing after maneuvers, athletes with anterior cruciate ligament injury (subjects) show a more flatfooted profile and more hip flexion than uninjured athletes (controls).
STUDY DESIGN: Case control study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: Data from 29 videos of subjects were compared wi

Fractures of the femoral head are rare. They usually occur in association with a posterior hip dislocation secondary to a high-energy trauma (motor vehicle accident). We report a case of Pipkin II fracture associated with an irreducible hip subluxation. Clinical signs are poor unlike in posterior hip subluxation. CT scan is important to evaluate the traumatism. The Hardinge approach is relevant in this context of irreducible hip subluxation. The clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic particularities of this lesion type are discussed.

Heterotopic ossification is bone formation that occurs in an abnormal soft tissue location, most commonly after trauma, head injury, and surgical procedures such as joint arthroplasty. We report a rare case of severe heterotopic ossification caused by nonaccidental injury in a 3-year-old child. To our knowledge, heterotopic ossification as a result of nonaccidental injury in children has been reported in only 2 other patients. Physicians should be aware of this rare presentation of nonaccidental injury, and nonaccidental injury should be considered in the differential diagnosis in children who

Human hepatocarcinoma-intestine-pancreas/pancreatic-associated protein HIP/PAP is a secreted C-type lectin belonging to group VII, according to Drickamer's classification. HIP/PAP is overexpressed in liver carcinoma; however, its functional role remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that HIP/PAP is a paracrine hepatic growth factor promoting both proliferation and viability of liver cells in vivo. First, a low number of implanted hepatocytes deriving from HIP/PAP-transgenic mice (<1:1,000) was sufficient to stimulate overall recipient severe combined immunodeficiency liver regeneratio

BACKGROUND: Traumatic hip dislocation results from the dissipation of a large amount of energy about the hip joint. Clinically, these forces often are first transmitted through the knee en route to the hip. It is therefore logical to look for coexistent ipsilateral knee injury in patients with a traumatic hip dislocation.
METHODS: Over a one-year period, we prospectively evaluated the ipsilateral knee of all patients who had a traumatic hip dislocation on the basis of a standardized history, physical examination, and magnetic resonance imaging.
RESULTS: Twenty-one (75%) of the twenty-eight k

A case involving late injuries to pelvic vessels caused by a sliding hip screw penetrating through the acetabulum has not been previously reported. We present the case of an 88-year-old man who presented with a retroperitoneal and extraperitoneal hematoma 4 months after open reduction and internal fixation of an intertrochanteric hip fracture. Surgical exploration showed a laceration of the left external iliac artery, which was repaired. However, the sliding hip screw was left in place. The patient's condition deteriorated, and he expired 2 days later. Postmortem examination revealed a lacerat

There are only a few reports about injury to vital anatomical structures by Kirschner wires in literature. In the case described here the guide wire of the dynamic hip screw caused a fatal injury to the external iliac vein which was not at first evident. The guide wire had obviously become caught up in the combination three-diameter drill and screwed by the drill into the pelvis. After a stable interval the patient suffered circulatory collapse. Emergency treatment and resuscitation attempts followed with no possibility of surgical intervention. The nature of the injury was established and des

A case of blunt trauma is presented with pelvic ring disruption and an extraperitoneal bladder rupture that communicated with the hip joint through an acetabular fracture. Extraperitoneal bladder rupture is usually associated with blunt polytrauma and pelvic ring injuries. Expedient diagnosis and multidisciplinary management are essential to minimize significant early and late complications.
